on tap at antons in kansas city, i really liked this beer, my first form these guys. its really unique in thats its grain base is almost like a bock or a dark amber, big and hearty, moderately sweet, with all the layers you would expect in something like a barleywine. its pretty thick, dense, not overly carbonated by any means, but somehow enticing and compelling, satisfyingly large. the berries are what make the beer though, they are tart and fresh and not at all reserved. they provide jammy sweetness, juicy tang, and an acidity that helps cut the grain down a little bit. i love the freshness there, and the way this beer bends the style guidelines so much. i found it just a little too sweet for large volume consumption, and its alcohol is not all that well hidden, which i actually almost prefer as it warms up. i also think the strength has something to do with the extraction and preservation of the authentic raspberry flavor, and i would hate to have that aspect reduced because it whats makes this beer stand out. overall delicious, but not something i would do again if i wasnt sharing it. great first impression though from this brewery!

Nothing but pleasantness - Warm, slightly sweet the original brown ale was present -but the imperial treatment added a touch of toast and majesty. No bitterness, brought the happy. It helped me tell my son I loved him for the first time and I almost said I was proud of him. If only it was a tad better.
