You're in for a treat with this one. Brewed with cocoa nibs and raisins and then lovingly aged in rum, sherry, bourbon, brandy and whiskey barrels, this big beer takes on flavors from the spirit and wood of each barrel. The end result is a complex and elegant companion that's right for carefree nights of privilege and excess.

Poured from a bottle into a brandy snifter for this review.

It pours pitch black, with a small khaki colored head that fades somewhat quickly.

The aroma is insane. Raisins, wood, a bit of booze... it's all here. There's a dark fruitiness to the nose, but the main focus is on the wood and liquor aromas. Oak jumps out, spicy and strong, and then the mixture of liquors used leaves you trying to figure out exactly what you're smelling. It's very appetizing, no matter what scent you decide is predominant.

The taste is simply amazing. It hits at first with a surprisingly bright fruit, much brighter than one would expect. Still raisiny, but without seeming overly sugared. That fruit melds smoothly into the chocolate, so subtly you almost don't realize it's changed. Only in the aftertaste do you really realize that it's cocoa now, not raisin. The wood and liquor flavors aren't hiding, but they aren't playing a starring role, either. Overall a great balance between the various flavors. Nothing hogs the spotlight, nothing gets overwhelmed. It warms your throat nicely at the end, without ever getting alcohol "hot".

The mouthfeel is almost dead on. At times it can seem almost thin, which is stunning in an 11% ABV brew. It's not enough to diminish the enjoyment at all, however.

Overall, this one absolutely deserved the local hype. With so many things going on, especially with the various spirit barrels in which the aging was done (run, sherry, brandy, bourbon, and whiskey), this could easily have been a muddled mess. Instead, it's one of the best brews I've ever had. One of the rare hyper-hyped beers that makes it worth the trouble of disposing of the bodies of the people I had to kill in order to get some.

Poured from 12oz bottle into what should be the right glassware

Pitch black as midnight brew with a two finger tan head , the lacing is there and stays through the glass

The smell is amazing a complex smelling stout that really has all the components you are looking for and some you are not. The booze , the smell of chocolate malt and fruit all three mixed in together

A really nice mouthfull of a beer , not too heavy but really smooth and just the right amount of carbonation

The taste of this beer is really nice , the dark malts , the booze , the fruity flavors all mix in well and the alcohol and bitterness comes in well at the end

Overall I am impressed with this beer , cant wait to age a few bottles of this and see how this taste in a year or two , if it gets any better I can only imagine

So many good things to say about this beer. Poured into snifter. Got about 1 inch head with aggresive pour. Very dark brown, with some light around the edges at times. Smells like rum soaked raisins. Also picked up some of the malt early on. Great taste! Dark fruits, and get a little of the rum. Flavor coats the mouth, and a pleasant warming after each sip. A bit on the sweeter side for some, but I enjoyed this immensely. At $12-15 for a 4 pack, the value of this beer is off the chart. I am dissapointed I did not get more .

A-Solid appearance, nothing special. Had 1 finger head, with nice dark chocolate brown color with lighter tan head.

S- Wonderful sherry and bourbon aroma. By far the best smelling stout I have had.

T- Initially great raisin/dry wine flavor followed by slight chocolate taste. After swallowed the bourbon and sherry really overpower the palate in a great way. Over all very balanced sweet/malt finish.

M- Very light mouthful for how heavy and thick the beer is. Very surprising more along the lines of Russian stout mouthful then what I got. Does have a good boozy warming sensation but not as much as I thought with the 11%

Overall- Great beer coming from a relatively new brewery. This is tied with foggy notion as my favorite beer from Mother's. Everything I have had from this brewery is hit or miss, and this beer was hit out of the park. Looking forward to trying new things from these guys.

Great barrel aged imperial stout. Appearance is jet black with a mocha head that leaves great lacing. Smell is multiple different spirit barrels mainly port and bourbon barrel, with excellent dark base beer under. Taste is awesome. Great bourbon barrel aged stout with just a twinge of red wine there. Mouthfeel is awesome. Overall, this is a beer i'd buy any time I see it on the shelves.

This is a complex brew! Fresh 2014 bottle into a sniffer. Super sweet aroma with a mixture of multiple flavors. Creamy mouthfeel, well hidden alcohol. Warm, roasty stout flavors back the barrel assault. An absolute delight to drink! Need to try and find this off draft!

What can you say? Aged to perfection. Hints of Virginia Slims, mom jeans...just joking. This pors a thick, purplish brown. The smell is fantastic -- dried fruit, plums and alcohol. This is huge, soft and flabby, almost barleywine territory. It just lounges on your tongue like Jabba the Hut. Lots of complexity: Cocoa powder, plums, figs, oak and some warm alcohol. Excellent.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a snifter. Acquired as an extra in a trade!!

A- Pours a pitch black, oily body with a 2-3 finger light mocha colored head that reduces slowly and leaves blotchy lacing.

S- Absolutely delectable and inviting .. Strong french vanilla, oak, butterscotch, chocolate, molasses, sweet bourbon, dark fruits and sherry. This smells great.

T- Sweet vanilla beans, milk chocolate, molasses, burnt sugar, oak notes upfront. Coffee and brandy notes on the finish. Roasty, charred aftertaste. Wonderful.

M- Thick, rich, creamy. Low carbonation.

This BA stout can play with the big boys. Seek it out.

Pours a deep, dark brown going to black. Opaque in the glass. Small khaki colored head which dissipates quickly. Fine sticky lacing left behind.

Aroma is sweet and sticky. Raisin, fig, ripe plum, roasted malt, and molasses. Subdued chocolate, oak, vanilla and a mish mash of liquors. I get the bourbon and port the most. Complex and intoxicating.

Taste follows the aroma. Sweet and mildly boozy. Raisin and fig first. Molasses, bourbon and oak barrel notes. Vanilla, plum, cocoa, and semi-sweet chocolate. Undertones of rum, port, and sherry from the various barrels used for aging.

Rich, sweet medium-thick mouth feel. Approaches syrupy but stays on the good side of it. Minimal carbonation. Oily and lingering. A bit dry on the aftertaste.

This is rich, complex beer which is quite unique due to the multiples barrel types used for aging. A bit boozy but not off-putting. A first rate stout and a definite must try.

Post Tisha B'av libation. Good idea? We'll see. 12 oz. bottle into a snifter.

A - Pitch black with a half-finger mocha head. Head didn't stick around much, but the lacing is tremendous.

N - Whoa. A lot going on here. Up front I get a blast of roast and a moderate amount of vanilla. Then I get the brandy and bourbon coming in on the sides. No raisins or chocolate so far. Let's try.

T - Mmmm. Very tasty. Very very tasty. Definitely getting the raisin here. Lots of chocolate. Honestly, I'm not getting too much from the barrels, but to continue with my honest streak, it just don't matter. This is a decadent treat.

M - It's thick, but not a ton of coating. And it just disappears on the finish. Mouthfeel could use a bit more work, but I don't have too much to complain about.

O - Wish I didn't trade away my other 2 of these. Oh well. This is just outstanding.

Thanks Chris for hooking me up with this. Had no idea how great it would be.

A: 12oz bottle into a snifter. Jet black with a half inch dark colored head. Good lacing.

S: Mild bourbon, dark fruits and chocolate.

T: Seems to be a perfect balance of bourbon, dark fruits, and roasted malts. A good amount of chocolate also.

M: Full bodied with a great balance of carbonation. Smooth, creamy, and abv well hidden.

This is equal to or better than any of the best BA stouts I've had. It was not overly boozy, too carbonated, or thin in anyway. In other words, perectly balanced, a very wellcrafted beer. Makes me wish I lived in Springfield.

Look: black as coal, 1+ fingers of tan head.

Smell: lotsa booze - whiskey, sherry, some sweetness, dark malts.

Taste: the sweetness is right up front, then the booze kicks in, some chocolate and cocoa maybe? Exquisite.

Feel: creamy delightfulness, the booze doesn't thin this out at all.

Overall: this is a world class Imperial Stout. My first beer from these guys, I'll be a repeat imbiber.

MILF seems appropriate for my first review. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle that was acquired in Spring 2013.

A: Pours jet black with minimal carbonation into a Goose Island Tulip glass.

S: Lots of chocolate and a hint of prunes.

T: Chocolate up front, with some barrel heat and lots of complex flavors on the finish. Sherry, vanilla, raisin, and more cocoa. Lots of sugar and sweetness that is not completely balanced out by the malt.

M: Thick and creamy, with lots of sweetness and low carbonation.

O: This is really an great beer that left me wanting more. Mother's definitely has their hits and misses, but I hope they made a lot more of this one for 2014.

First of all thanks Ben for this bottle you are a stand up dude and sorry for the broken bottle of KBS in your luggage.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a snifter, appearance is black with a half inch mocha colored head.

Smell is bourbon, roasted coffee and chocolate.

Taste is bourbon and vanilla and oakyness. Chocolate and roasted malts. Warming of throat after the swallow, very smooth and very well balanced.

Mouthfeel is full, true to the style classic bourbon barreled stout a little hot...really nice.

I have never heard of Mothers Brewing before but they are definitely on my radar now. Thanks Ben for this little beauty

Consumed blind courtesy of KevSal as part of Blind BIF 8

A - Pours a rich dark black with a nice 1 inch tan foam that hangs around for a bit but never fully disappears. There are small mountains of lacing creating a nice scenic background around my glass.
S - Roasted malts dominate the nose, a lot of chocolate and vanilla
T - Very roasted flavor, again the chocolate dominates with vanilla rounding out at the end, its weird because there are hints of bourbon, whiskey maybe, nothing sticking right out at you but there is a very complex flavor to this beer.
M/D - Very smooth and silky. I want to make a beer that feels like this. Its so smooth and very drinkable. It reminds me of a less potent Parabola
I've had Velvet Merlin or whatever its called but I don't remember it being this good, so I think thats out the door...

Big thanks to dujayhawk for sending this bottle! Reviewed from notes. 2013 vintage. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Brooklyn Brewery tulip glass.

A: Essentially black, opaque, with a small amount of visible carbonation and forms a thin tan head that dissipates to spotty foam fairly quickly.

S: Chocolate and vanilla, bourbon and oak, and deep roasted malts. Not overly sweet.

T: Bourbon, oak, vanilla and cacao, dry oak tannins with a touch of barrel char, dark fruits, sherry, and roasted malts that are rich and a little bitter. Bittersweet cacao and roasted malts accompany the bourbon into the hang.

M: Medium body, but the mouthfeel is a little on the light side for style. Not overly hot at all, especially for style. Carbonation sensation is fairly low, which lends itself in the smooth mouthfeel, but it's not at all flat.

O: This is a good beer - put together very well. It doesn't have the thick, nearly viscous, mouthfeel that the best Imperial Stouts have, but it's not distractingly lacking. I really enjoyed the barrel and bourbon flavor level - certainly present, but at a level that lets the other flavors play a part int he palate, rather than completely overpowering. I don't have the palate to separate all of the liquors that gave the barrels for this beer, and bourbon was the most easily recognized for me. Regardless, recommended for sure.

Thanks to rudzud
Nice creamy dark small ish 1/3 finger head, light lacing, decent legs, pretty much pitch black beer.

Nose big roasty dark malt stout, some dark choc fudgey like, fluffy nougat, little creamy mild choc like, little raisin dark fruit, lots of barrel, vanilla and little toasted oak, little rum, faint whisky bourbon like, little brandy candied liquor, choc covered raisin, little port like wine barrel, mild choc covered wafer.

Taste starts sweet and rich, thick creamy lush with bitter tannic roast, big toasted malt and char at least tamed by the barrels. Dark choc fudge, thick little syrupy, chewy nougat, etc. And little tangy like roast. Then barrel, the tangy wine barrel, little port like and brandy, mild rum, more sherry, probably all adding sweetness making it tough to drink. Mild vanilla barrel, very faint whisky, and some dark fruits, sweet candied stone like fruit, raisin, plum, etc. Mild booze, mild heat and booze flavor. Finish drier but sticky sweet syrupy like, more tangy sherry and wine barrels, little barrel flavor, more fudge.

Mouth fuller bod, touch fudgey but also syrupy, carb is a bit too light, bit too syrupy, very mild booze.

Overall still great despite all the flaws.

2013 Bottle

A- Pours a near black with a tan head of about a finger. Retention of a ring around the edge. Sits really still in the glass, giving the indication of hefty Impy here.

S- Nose picks up the aroma from about a foot away from the glass. Huge dose of caramel, bourbon, raisins, vanilla, molasses, and wood barrel. The tone has been set...and it means business.

T- Dark fruits lead the way before introducing me to the sugary sweet malt that is roasted and toasted goodness. Sherry and bourbon sets in late.

M- full, viscous but not overly thick and chewy. Low carb. Cloying initially, but settles in well. A bit of warmth here and there.

O- A serious stout here. Reminds me a lot of the Prairie 2013 Noir with a hint more dark fruit character. This brewery has been hit or miss for me, but this one lands squarely on the bull's-eye.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice dark brown nearly black with nice thin mocha head that fades to leave thin wisps. 4.25

S - Aromas are super complex. Loads of sherry, rum, port wine, brandy, bourbon and whiskey. Again, super complex and rich. The barrels here are awesome with great chocolate as well. Wow 4.75

T - Taste is nice chocolate, rather sweet malts and dark fruit, almost chalky chocolate. Lots of port and brandy and sherry, loads of sweetness. Light dark chocolate, the bourbon and whiskey are a bit more subdued, alcohol is hidden quite well. 4.25

M - Mouthfeel is a little sticky and heavy, the sweetness becomes a bit much. 3.75

O - Overall this beer was really interesting and good, the nose is phenomenal with great barrel notes. The taste while good never lives up to it. 4.25

Really interesting beer. You get some sweetness from the multitude of barrels. Surprisingly little alcohol bite on this beer. The nose is quite interesting with almost black cherry hints along with chocolate and coffee. This beer tastes like a cross between a well aged boozy quad and barrel aged stout. Really fun to drink and definitely memorable. I have to imagine this is as great cellared as it is fresh.

Black with brown edges. Small tan head. Molasses, burnt brown sugar, chocolate. Lots of rich roasted malt flavor. Sweet with some nice booze kick. Some vanilla and coffee. Sherry, bourbon barrel sweetness. It’s a bit muddled but there’s a lot of nice stuff going on. Mild oak. Long roasty, sweet finish. Low-ish carbonation. The alcohol heat is warm and nice. Very good imperial stout.

I love the name on this beer. Got a free sample from Alcohol Paul. Side poured from the bottle into a custom Deschutes/Boulevard snifter.

Appearance - Pours a deep black color with a beautiful small mocha head. Leaves a bit of lacing on the side of the glass. Amazing presentationg, of course love the name and the packaging.

Smell - Deep complex smell of so many different elements: sherry, oak, boubon, booze, sweetness, dark fruits, and manliness. A very complex nose, impressive.

Taste - Follows the nose very closely, but more intense. THe sherry is very strong in the drink, as well as the dark fruits and the oak and wood notes. This is an amazing tasting beer.

Mouthfeel - As always with stouts and porters, mouthfeel is typically my favorite part, and this is no different. Thick, rich, smooth, and boozy. Warming.

Overall - A through and through amazing beer. Highly recommended if you are into this style at all.
