Chocolate black with piles of rocky tan foam.
Tangerine sorbet, evergreen and skunky buds with a touch of tar and char.
Steak crust, molasses, dark chocolate and fig with grassy rye spice in the middle then oily orange, pine needle, and resin hops.
Flower nectar finish and ringing minty, grapefruit rind linger.
Medium, plenty of chew, soft.

Made with rye; Amarillo and Mosaic hops.

Nose is a knockout - on point for style and superfresh for hops. Taste is not quite there - malts don't let the tropical fruit from Mosaic shine through (though I do imagine a bit of blueberry), and it's a fairly gentle 60 IBUs. Plus this is more on the hoppy porter side of Black IPA than the darkened pale ale. But these are quibbles - there layers to the hops, gooey body, and sheets of lace.

A standout CDA.

Got this one at the De Molen beer shop in Bodegraven.

From a bottle into a snifter
Bottled 30 May 2014
IBU: 60

APPEARANCE: Clear brown pour yields a one finger, medium looking, fluffy, light tan head with decent retention. Clear bistre brown with lower levels of carbonation. Head fades to a thin wisp and sticks to the sides of the glass. A splotchy wisp remains the whole way and leaves touches of lacing down the glass. Decent looking.

SMELL: Big nose with lots of hops. Honeydew melon, pineapple, grapefruit and piney notes, as well as some roasted grain on the nose. This is mostly hops for sure, but there is a roasted base underneath that's appreciated.

TASTE: Pretty good actually. Really hoppy with caramel and light roasted flavors up front, before a good finish of bitter, piney hops at the swallow. Bold and lingering aftertaste of pine, grapefruit, hop bitterness and a touch of bitter chocolate as well. Pretty good, surprisingly enough.

PALATE: Medium body ad medium levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly dry. Well executed here as well.

OVERALL: Well blow me down. Brewfist makes a good beer. This was solid, with a good look, bold, interesting and well balanced aromas and flavors, as well as a solid feel to support it all. Good beer. Unbelievable.

Pours dark brown, almost black, one finger tan head that recedes fast, leaving lots of traces and a sticky lace.
Roasted malts and green hops are fifty fifty in the smell. There's grapefruit, some sweeter citrus too, pine, unrripe pineapple, faint chocolate, dark bread, burnt sugar.
Roast comes first in the taste, a bit burnt, ashy, followed fast by citrus (faint tangerine too) and pineapple juice, some peach and apricot as it starts to sweeten up a bit, faitn mango, plus clearer dark chocolate, faint coffee bean, raisin too. Finishes with pine and charcoal, bitter, but forgiving.
Medium body and carbonation, nice balance between rough malts and fruitiness, hiding the alcohol nicely in the same time. Aftertaste is left with burnt dark bread (the rye helps too), leafy hops and even some lingering fruitiness.
Wasn't quite sure what Brewfist could dish out, but it was a great first one for me. Great hops, great balance, a really great black IPA.
