Poured a rich, cloudy orange with two fingers of quick-fading white head. Aroma of orange, tropical fruit, and some light pepper.

Moderate carbonation and a full, creamy mouthfeel. Big citrus up front with orange peel and apricot. Biscuity malt backbone with hints of vanilla, red wine, and some tart lemon. Dry finish that's quite bitter with spice and grass.

Pretty darn tasty and complex. I think their Galaxy White IPA is still my favorite but this one came close to topping it.

Anchorage Brewing is the king of expensive, extravagant American beers; everything I’ve had from them has been superb and, most importantly, worth the cost. Here’s hoping their saison is in the same vein.

Batch #2, brewed in August 2012 (five months before the date of this tasting).

A: Pours foamy and thick, with a hazy, tawny gold body and a foamy off-white head. What’s left of the head after a few minutes appears soft and weightless, as if it could be easily blown away like soap foam. Abundant lacing.

S: Exceptionally fruity, this nose is absolutely bursting with the juicy aromas of fresh passion fruit and peach, with a supporting cast of grape, mango, and kiwi. Extraordinary. Underneath, the twang of yeasty funk is fully apparent, as well as a green, grassy scent and notes of wet cedar. Slight hop and spice tones show an herbal citrus – lemon mixed with sage, black pepper, and coriander – confirming that this is indeed one of the most complex and intriguing noses I’ve ever experienced on a beer. Bravo.

T: Opens with a rush of sour flavor, immediately bringing to mind lactic acid and lemon juice. A fruity sweetness rolls along with it, fulfilling the mango, passion fruit, and kiwi of the nose in a more subtle form; here, it has the more distinguished character of a semi-sweet Riesling. The natural, funky tastes of lime rind, rose water, barnyard brett, and fresh-cut grass swell toward the middle of the palate; a prickly hop bite of tangerine and green apple isn’t far behind. In all, a perfectly balanced sweet and sour palate that is an absolute pleasure to drink. Finishes with a wine barrel taste: light oak and sweet white grape.

M: There’s not a heavy texture in this beer at all; it’s as light and refreshing as a beer can be, with just the right amount of fizzy carbonation to keep it from being too weighty. Remarkably crisp: a little colder than cellar temperature is just right.

O: What can I say other than what I’ve already said: “incredible?” This is one of those beers you try once and think about for years afterward. It’s fresh fruit in the nose and sweet/sour heaven in the palate, a combination that I’ve never experienced before and I doubt I will ever find again. Truly one of the best beers I’ve ever had.

22oz bottle.

Pours hazy orangy-copper with a thin, quickly dissapating head of white. A partial skim coat with some tattered lacing throughout the glass.

Aromatics lead off a blend of flowers, citrus and Brett. Flower petals, orange zest, dried and musty pineapple, dusty boards, and grapeskins. Hints of oak and candied fruit follow through.

Light bodied with a crispish and slightly creamy mouthfeel.

Apple and grapeskins with vineous oak, an earthy dryness, and cut grass start the palate. Undertones of citrus zest, wine-soaked oak, and wet hay follow through.

Finishes bone-dry with a mild bitterness, oaky tannins, and a lingering vineousity.

Great beer but it could benefit from a much higher carbonation level to release all it's glory.
Quite complex.

Batch #2 - August 2012. Bottle to tulip.

A - Slightly hazy medium orange colour. Translucent. One finger of white head.

S - A great mix of citrus, tropical fruit and sour/tartness from the brett. The background adds oak, spice, grape and a touch of caramel malt sweetness.

T - The citrus and tropical fruit aromas in the nose don't translate as expected in to the palate, but they are still lightly present. There is a big oak profile up front with a moderate sour/tartness from the wild yeast that doesn't overpower the beer but adds another dimension to it. Some peppery spice, clove, Belgian yeast esters and a touch of red wine are also present.

M - Light to medium body. Dry. Slightly sticky. Light carbonation.

Hazy orange, languid trails of rising carbonation. Lasting head of white soapy foam, drippy downward webs of lacing. Good retention, it lasts for the duration of the glass.

Grapefruit pith, white pepper, tangerine from the Citra, tart fruitiness, dry finish. Clover honey aftertaste, big sandalwood aroma, woody and spicy with a backing fruit bouquet. Nicely balanced tartness, mild bitterness underneath that lingers into the dry finish.

Despite the flowery romance novel BS on the label, the beer is in fact pretty decent.

Batch #2 August/2012

Pours a cloudy orange with a large, fluffy, chunky head on top that eventually settles down to a lumpy covering. The aroma is fantastic...citrus peel and soft floral notes upfront, peppery spice, juicy and slightly grassy hops, yeast esters, and a lovely pale malt base. Juicy citrus and tart fruit sticks to the tip of the tongue and stays there. Here is where the Brett reveals itself, but it's not super funky. Lingering peppery bitterness, drying wood, flower petals, and earth. Some wine-like tannins perhaps, but the Pinot doesn't really come through in any significant way. Very dry and quite tart, yet soft and fluffy in the mouth. With the rose hips, peppercorns, orange peels, dry hopping, barrel aging, and wild yeast, this could be a total mess in other hands. This guy obviously knows what he's doing. Good stuff...

A gift from a friend back east.

A - Murky apricot, light near white head, some cling lace.

S - Tart, funky, malt takes the back seat.

T - Very tart and refreshing. Lip smacking flavor. Malt and hops play second fiddle to the funk and tart. It's very nice.

M - Medium body, nice carb and balance.

D - I would session this in a second!
