Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a snifter at cellar temperature. I've popped the corks off enough of these to warrant a review now.

The Tide and Its Takers is a dark, hazy straw color with a one to two-finger white head. Looks like a substantial Belgian-style ale.

Its aroma is very fruity and floral... and the smell is somehow sort of sour as well (I'm guessing this is from the brettanomyces). It smells very similar to white wine, no doubt because this was aged in French oak chardonnay barrels. A wonderful and interesting scent.

The taste follows up on the smell with few surprises. It has a fruity tartness and dry finish which REALLY reminds me of white wine or champaign, but then the finish has this wonderful bready aftertaste which reminds me that this is most DEFINITELY beer! The alcohol is excellently disguised.

The mouthfeel is crisp and effervescent, but not as highly carbonated as champaign, which I think is a good thing.

This is an extremely unique beer. I've really tasted NOTHING else quite like it, what with the remarkable qualities provided by the brett and the chardonnay barrel fermentation. It's really a must-try, trail-blazing belgian ale, if you ask me. (1,192 characters)

Enjoyed out of a brown 750 mL bottle and poured into a small Belgian-style tulip glass. Bottle is marked "BATCH #2/NOV 2012", so the brett has had some time to make this beer its own.

Appearance - Hazy golden color that is orange like the rind, rather than the flesh. Head is yellowish-white and one-and-a-half fingers strong. Dissipates after a fairly short time--maybe 60 seconds--and leaves moderate lacing.

Smell - Like pretty much all of Anchorage's beers, the smell is intoxicating and complex. To be honest, the brett dominates here and pushes out some of the more yeasty, fruity characteristics that you often find in a tripel. That being said, there is some citrus and floral overtones that remind me of white wine supporting the funk.

Taste - Some elements of light oak and vanilla, but mostly barnyard funk and wet hay. The citrus notes come through and now I can sense more specific flavors, like lemon zest and starfruit.

Mouthfeel - Pleasant carbonation and medium-bodied. Finish is dry.

Overall, I would say this is one of my new favorites in the tripel style, but it just doesn't drink like a tripel to me. The brett really dominates in a way that makes this one feel more like a saison than a tripel. Based on that, I have to dock the overall score just a bit, even though I really liked it. Either way an awfully tasty beer. (1,347 characters)

Poured from 750mL corked & caged bottle into a tulip. This is batch #2, brewed November 2012. I've been looking forward to this one!

Appearance: light golden hue with a light haze and a moderate effervescence. Head is a thick finger of frothy white foam with very good retention, if not much lace.

Smell: sour at first with a bit of sweetness underneath; a grassy funk then develops. I think Sorachi Ace hops complement Brettanomyces well in general, and here they work very well together. There's a hint of diacetyl which I don't love, but still, it's a very good smelling beer.

Taste: bright sourness that quickly slides to the side of the tongue as the funk and bitterness develop. Actually, this beer really does seem to work most of its magic on the sides of the palate. Very enticing, although again, the diacetyl butteriness is just not my bag. That brings it down from "totally awesome" to just plain "damn good".

Mouthfeel: medium body with a massive carbonation and a wonderfully satisfying creaminess. There you have big bottle-conditioned beers, though.

Overall: I like this beer quite a lot. Though I really dislike diacetyl, it's mild enough not to be a dealbreaker. If that particular trait doesn't bother you, though, this beer is absolutely well worth trying. (1,281 characters)

750 C&C split with Evan yesterday, 6/8/2013 in snifters. Going off memory here until I get to try this one again.

Aroma: Mostly farmhouse- a bit of sweet lemon along with a nice dose of funk; or whatever it is that I get from Brett beers. There's a lot of the funk for sure. A bit of tartness. (4.25)

Colour: Hazy golden body with a good bit of thick white head that sticks around for a good while, lacing is very nice and thick. (4.25)

Flavour: Lotta funk in this one. I really like it. A decent bit of citrus, like orange and lemon zest, but mostly covered up by the funk. It tastes great, not supremely complex but definitely brings some interesting stuff to the glass. (4.25)

Mouthfeel: Creamy, full bodied tripel that is very well carbonated and finishes nicely without much dryness. Refreshing and tasty. The aftertaste is rather tart without being too super sour. Nice! (4.5)

Overall: Definitely a tasty Brett beer, funky and refreshing. I've passed this over at the store a lot and I'll be sure to get one if I see it on the shelves again. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys a nice dose of Brett. (4.25) (1,118 characters)

Victory tulip

A: Hazy bright yellow orange color. Full finger of bright white head. Sheets of lacing. Nice bottle carbed brew.

S: Nice Brett forward nose here. Smells funky. Also get nice vinous notes. The hops are there too adding some interesting fruit character. Lemon. Crisp citrus.

T: Up front you get some hop character from the Sorachi Ace. Then that vinous hints. There is some sweetness, but not the traditional banana and clove flavors. There are some oak notes and rounding during sip. Love the funky character. Crisp refreshing finish. Doesn't taste like 9% unless you drink whole bottle :).

M: Medium bodied. Clean. (657 characters)

Got this bottle at a store in Burlington, Vermont. Batch 2, November 2012. From notes.

A - One finger thick white head on a cloudy golden body. Nice lace rings and a half finger of retention.

S - Brett, grape skin, lemon. Sort of a gueuze character with the sweet/tart thing going on. Peach maybe.

T - Grape skins, grapes, dusty, lemons. Quite a dusty sorta taste. Overripe peach and orange.

M - Soft carbonation, sort of creamy and full body with a bit of tartness in the finish.

O/D - Cool beer. Couldn't pick up any alcohol and the Brett character was good if a bit too dominant. (588 characters)

Batch 2, Nov 2012 bottle date. Another step on my quest to try all the Anchorage beers.

Pours a golden yellow/orange with a bit of haze, decent fluffy head that doesn't leave much lacing.

Pils malt sweetness up front, with lots of strong musty and fruity funk. Peppercorns, orange, peach, apricot, pear, sage, herbal spice, cheese, a bit medicinal and hints of alcohol.

Wow, much more complex than I was expecting - pils malt is balanced out by good acidity, both acetic and lactic but not distracting in any way. A bit of honey sweetness then yeasty esters, herbal spice, clove, peppercorns, sage, spicy and lemony hops in the after taste with a decent amount of warming and some vanilla/caramel in the finish.

Mouth is solid despite all the Brett going on. Lasting enough to leave an impression but with soft carbonation that doesn't feel too sticky.

Not usually a huge fan of tripels but this one really hit the spot due to the earthy funk and tartness keeping the sweetness/alcohol in check. Feels satisfying and paired well with food (stuffed bell peppers in this case.) (1,080 characters)

750 ml bottle poured into a tulip. $13 I think.

A: Hazily golden. Generous head with big, soapy bubbles. Very promising.

S: Brett party. A little citrus, maybe lemon, but the Brett is in charge in the aroma department.

T: Tart, funky, and fruity, though again, the fruit is subdued in favor of the Brett, as are any readily discernible triple characteristics. Maybe the yeast holds back some flavors that are hidden in here, but if you're a Bretthead, this is for you.

M: Soft and gentle on the palate. Quite dry. Very warming.

O: Quenching, refreshing, and totally perfect on a late spring night. The only thing preventing even higher scores from this reviewer is that it wasn't the most "complex" drinking experience, with the yeast asserting itself so dominantly. That said, it tastes great. A treat, and not my last time. (831 characters)

Pours a bright apricot yellow, moderately cloudy body, several inches of bubbly white head that leaves a nice ring of lacing.

Smells of lemon, flowers, brett, dry grassy funk, white grapes and oranges and pears, a touch of sourness. Noticeable hop character. Fairly complex, smells very nice.

Opens with flowers and dry hay like funk, a light sweetness that fades into a drier white grape fruitiness. Finishes dry and fairly hoppy for the style. Fairly similar to the nose but a little less fruit.

Mouthfeel is lightly fizzy, medium body, alcohol is well hidden and drinkability is good.

This beer is pretty typical of Anchorage and very good like all their beers. This is probably the least unusual Anchorage beer I've had though.

Batch #2. Poured in a snifter, the beer is a very bright, slightly hazed, orange-gold coloring with a thin, whispy film coating of white on the surface. Aromas of roast and earth softening the Belgian yeast characteristics, including cherry sweet and white wine grapes. Slight floral highlights on the nose, too. Flavors are very layered, with an initial blend of char, tobacco, and wood giving rise to a toasted grain backbone with floral and sweet highlights of cherry, some citrus, nutmeg, all-spice, and white wine grape. Very balanced, and very dynamic. Wow. The chardonnay/riesling grape characteristics blend into the aftertaste, with a dry, crisp feel in mouth. Dry, clean finish, with a slightly dry-sweet lingering. This beer, despite an elevated ABV, is a great sipper. Very smooth and very tasty. (808 characters)

A: pours a clear light orange with a small and dense white head that is slow to fade into a DFH snifter
S: smells of bretty funk, some oak and a slight tartness.
T: clean bready malt flavor followed by a tart kick in the teeth, slight esters as well, a bit lemony, decent fruitiness, slight spicy and peppery yeast, a bit of oak and vanilla. swallow brings a bit of funk, some oak and a bit more yeasty goodness with a slight band aid/horseblanket flavor on the finish
M: lighter side of medium with soft carbonation from bottle conditioning. dry finish
O: Holy cow is this good. Anchorage knows how to make some solid beers and this one is fantastic. it isn't your run of the mill tripel and the brett and chardonnay barrels brings an interesting side to things. Worth every penny and a must try. (823 characters)

This one took me from eager anticipation to fear to delight in a matter of moments. The description on the bottle made it sound amazing, and the pour to a tulip only got me more fired up with such a strong golden color. However, when I raised the glass to my nose, I smelled ... chicken coop? It was a smell I hadn't really gotten that strong since my childhood on a farm, and I have to admit it was not a good memory. I was curious if it was a bad bottle, but order was soon restored when I tasted it. There were those familiar Belgian yeast notes, but in a faded, distant kind of way. They quickly gave way to the brett, but again not in as strong a way as in other wild-style ales. There was such a collaborative effort between the flavors, and it made for a fairly unique taste experience. Really enjoyed this, and would certainly buy it again. (848 characters)

A: Pours a hazy straw yellow with two fingers of white head that fades into a thin cap with a little lacing.

S: Belgian spices and candy sugar up front followed by a nice, musty Brett flavor reminiscent of barnyards and a bit of funk (in a good way). There are some sweet and oaky Chardonnay notes toward the finish.

T: Belgian spices up front here as well before musty barnyard flavors kick in. Tart, fermented fruit flavors follow with an oaky Chardonnay finish that is just slightly bitter.

M: Medium-light body with carbonation on the low side of moderate, this beer is a little undercarbonated, but is smooth without being watery.

O: A very enjoyable beer overall. I love the combination of the Belgian tripel flavors/aromas with those contributed by the Brett and the Chardonnay barrels. (797 characters)

A: Pours a golden yellow color with 2+ fingers of head that quickly fizzles away to nothing

S: Nice and funky, with quite the tartness and Brett character to go along with it. Along with the funk, there is some light fruitiness and oak from the chardonnay barrels

T: Follows the nose with less of the tartness and more of the barnyard from the Brett. Still get the light fruitiness and subtle oak from the chardonnay barrels. Definite vinous qualities from the barrel as well. Some nice, simple complexities all around

M: Light-medium bodied with low-moderate carbonation. Quite dry

O: This is definitely not your average tripel. The barrel and Brett character add quite a bit of complexity without overwhelming any of the base beer's characteristics. Quite expensive, but very nicely done (818 characters)

This beer poured out as a hazy golden color with a very nice white head on top. The retention is good as well as the lacing. The smell of the beer has a really good sweet and citric aroma, incredibly balanced. Really pleasant on the nose. The taste of the beer is really well balanced also, sweet maltiness with a great balance of Brett with a hint of spice as well. The mouthfeel is well carbonated yet soft, there is a slight creaminess to it, really nice. Overall it's very good, the addition of Brett adds a really nice additional element to the beer. 22oz bottle from batch #1, Oct 2011.

Pours hazy straw with an inch of white head. A partial skim coat and a few dots of lacing for the duration of the glass. Carbonation light for the style.

Aromatics lead off with pineapple skins, apples, bubblegum, cloves, and white wine. Hints of oak, cut grass, and musty fruit follow through.

Light bodied with a crisp mouthfeel.

Candied apples, clove-studded bubblegum, wine-soaked biscuits, and wet hay start the palate.
Shades of honey, orange marmalade, and warming alcohol step forward.

Finishes with mild brett, winey oak, and honey-drizzeled apples.

Tasty and complex. It could use a higher carbonation level and the hopping is subdued though. Perhaps batch 2 when it's fresh could be superior. (747 characters)

Poured chilled into a tulip.

Pours a nice hazy blonde color with an inch of airy white head that quickly recedes with light surface layer and moderate lacing.

Flavor and aroma are all about the brett. Sour grapes with a hint of spice.

Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a medium dry finish.

Overall a nicely balanced beer. Nothing wrong, but nothing stands out either. Ultimately it is exactly what it is. A blonde tripel that highlights the brett. (470 characters)

Thanks to DaftCaskBC for sharing this bottle with me. Poured into flute. Poured a very nice lightly hazy golden yellow color with about an inch of white head that hadgood retention and moderate lacing. The beer had a lot of tiny bubbles streaming, but seemed to be lacking the carbonation levels seen in most Tripels.

The aroma was very, if you're into the funk. The Brett was strong and dominated the scent. Horse blanket, almost bordering on baby diaper. Underneath there was a very light grain scent, and not much of the usual yeast spices and aromas you see in the style. On the tongue, the Brett was still the main feature, the base grains showed up a bit better, and the yeasty spice was a bit more notable, but yeah, this is a very Bretty brew.

The body was on the light side of medium for the style, and was very dry, especially for a Tripel. Drinkability was excellent, if you dig the funk, and would be OK even if you weren't. Overall, a very nice brew. This is the first beer I've had from this brewery, and I look forward to trying more. A must try if you see it. (1,077 characters)

Pours a slightly pale golden colour, mild haze but mostly clear. White, dense head, nice marshmallowy lace. Looks nice.

Smells Bretty. Funky and wild, with some barnyard mixing with citrus tang and an odd peanutty kind of aroma. A little bit too rich/sweet actually, but with some nice notes.

Taste starts with more nutty malt, then gets that organic funky flavour, not quite tart but just nice and organic-tasting yeasts. A hint of soil and grass and a slight mould flavour, in a good way. Spice on the back as well. Could use more acidity to freshen it up and cut through as it's still a little on the rich/sweet side for me.

A bit bitey, but a good bit of substance on the feel. Quite puckering towards the back, however.

Pleasant, but not quite as well harnessed as others in the same ballpark sort of 'genre' that I've tried. (834 characters)

S: sour funk, sweet pilsner malt, greasy noble hops.

T: sour funk, soft yeast, noble hops.

M: medium smooth viscosity and a medium level of soft carbonation.

A - Slightly hazy golden yellow with a thin white head settling to a tiny ring of foam.

S - Sweet fruity esters, lemon, maybe pineapple juice, light but noticeable brett funk, musty, grassy, wet hay, very light oaky tannins and chardonnay notes.

T - Musty brett funk of light to medium strength, stone fruit, touch of spice, light vanilla, sweet vinous notes, yeasty esters.

M - Medium body with light carbonation giving an almost chewy mouthfeel.

D - Solid beer. Really like the Anchorage beers. Reminds me of some of the Flemish Primitive series. (552 characters)

Poured from a bottle received in trade from Aml42000 - Big thanks man!!

A: Pours a cloudy pale yellow color. Small fizzy head that fades instantly into a light carbonation ring on the top with little lace sticking to the glass.

S: The nose is full of yeasty brett funk with some spice and pepper hanging around in the background. There is some sweetness that comes off almost as grapes. A little bit of oak, but its not predominant.

T: The typical tripel notes prevail at the beginning, but are washed away toward the middle of the drink by brett and funk, which carries through the finish. Lots of oak at the end, which balances the tart and sweetness out well.

M: Very light body with high carbonation and a dry finish. The feel on this one is great.

O: This one improved drastically as it warmed. The zest, tart, and oak came out of the glass, almost like an explosion, with a little bit of warmth and time. Loved the oak and citrus flavors that balanced the funk. Glad I got this bottle. (999 characters)

Batch #1, bottled October 2011.

Beer is a hazy golden with a large white head.

Brett is the most immediate scent, funky horse blanket along with a bit of cherry. A bunch of light fruit scents accompany that: lemon, green grape and perhaps peach. A bit of oak, but it is low down. Nice scent.

Taste is similar to the nose and is very good. Brett is obvious but not overpowering, adding a nice funky side to the more expected tripel flavours. White pepper sticks out, along with lemon, apple and green grape. Like the nose, the oak is restrained but present. When considering the fact that this was aged in chardonnay barrels, it does come across as having some similarities to a white wine, but I would not have picked that out without the suggestion. Quite dry as a result of the brett. Very good.

Full bodied, moderately carbonated. Active without irritation. Slightly astringent.

Overall, very good. A nice twist on the tripel style. I had been looking for this one for awhile and, while I spent too much for it, I am glad I got to try it. (1,048 characters)

A: Pours a cloudy yellowish- orange with great carbonation leaving behind a nice whispy cap, solid head retention and lacing present

S: Nose is big Brett, baby diaper, whiff of barf, banana, more Brett and some light Earthiness with a measure of red and green apples

T: Brett, pure and simple. Both of us(the other being a BJCP master judge) felt the Brett was heavy handed leaving to much in the way of diapers, poop and hurlistic qualities. Remnants of what was once a Tripel present light orchard style fruits waaay in the background. Some pepper is noted as is a light lemon drop and grass.
The Chardonnay present I elt was minute but I did pick up some white grape husks.

M: Medum bodied, well carbonated, yeast and a biscuity flavor and feel are felt now but little behind the Brett

O: The Brett ran away with this beer. (832 characters)

Poured into a Unibroue tulip glass. Pours a hazy light golden amber with a two finger white head with good retention and lacing, constantly refreshed by active carbonation. Aroma of light fruit, lemon, butter and wild yeast. Flavor of lemon, orange, brett, light malt, slightly vinous. Finishes with a hint of wood, dry tartness and residual yeast. Light to medium bodied with nice sharpness from the carbonation. Closer in style to an American wild ale than a tripel, with a very light touch of Belgian. Not my style, but enjoyable as a interestingly flavored, well made wild yeast influenced ale. (598 characters)
