I love Anchorage they are just amazing. This beer however hits the "meh" notes on all cylinders.

Pours a black kinda stout like body thought a hair thin. A light head but the legs are meh at best.

I get a sour note in the aroma and some lactose which is known for killing other aromas.

Sharp sour backing, way back with lactos and dark flavors. Certainly some brett and some dark malts but they are killed by lactose and sour.

Creamy but not full bodied and with sour poorly involved.

I have to say after so much success this is an ok to good beer. It isn't great and for Anchorage that's a failure.

Batch 1, bottled March 2013.

A: Pours near black with a surprisingly faint light brown film for a head. Soapy lace.
S: Pinot noir comes through nicely alongside tart scents of acid and buttery oak. Faint cheesy funk.
T: Pinot noir dominates again with gritty oak tannins and grape skins, a hint of dark chocolate, lactic acid, and butter oak in the finish. One dimensional but delicious.
M: Very soft and frothy carbonation, medium body, slicker and a bit thinner than I would have liked.
O: A red wine bomb, smooth and easy. Needs more carbonation and funk, but definitely flavorful and interesting. However, my least favorite Anchorage beer so far.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 750 mL bottle into a Firestone Walker snifter.

A: Opaque and essentially black, with a thin light tan head and fairly low visible carbonation.

S: Funk and acetic acid, some feet, vinous character, oak barrel, and roasted malts. Smells fairly sour.

T: Funky tartness, coffee roasted malts, vinous, acetic acid. The funk character predominates over the sourness. Has some oak tannins lurking underneath. An almost absent finish, with only light tartness, acetic acid and roast malt bitterness.

M: Medium body to a bit on the heavier side, low carbonation sensation. Alcohol presence seems middle of the road.

O: I found it relatively enjoyable but nothing to truly excite the palate. A bit odd - strikes me as a coffee sour. Still, glad to have tried it.

750ml bottle into a tulip. march 2013 vintage

dark black color with a half inch beige head. smell of tart cherries, very good! smell is so awesome. taste not quite..bit still good.big tartness up front with a lack of cherries, though the back end is quite a bit bitter. finish lingers with bitter cherries. good..could be even better with even more age. very juicy. medium body and low carbonation.

overall 13 months did it well, needs even more age though

Thanks to Chico1985 for sharing this, interesting beer 2 nights ago. Reviewed fully on tablet during consumption.

A- Black body poured from the corked 750ml to a chalice. Light tan head forms to about a half finger with a frothy texture but falls fairly quickly to a small foamy ring. Lacing is sparse with some small spots.

S- Lactic tarts pretty much dominate the nose for me. Leads me to believe the flavor will be full of funk and sour bacterial influence. Cherry pie Brett feel with some barnyard. Some vinous hints.

T- Talk about a U-turn from aroma to flavor. Some of the aroma carries over but for me a ton of new things take over here. Roasted malts and cocoa come into play here with a spicy Belgian yeast base. With time the lactic acid, Brett cherry funk and barnyard comes out. What really takes over is the pinot noir and oak. Lots of vinous dark fruits and oak tannins.

MF- Dried out body with a light to moderate overall consistency. Carbonation somewhat on the lower end but the flavors don't really need huge bubbles. Finishes with oak tannins and some tartness on the palate.

Wine is quite massive in this funky dark ale. All over the place but the flavors come together fairly well. Interesting beer once again by Anchorage.

Batch 1, March 2013 bottling split 3 ways. Surprising lack of exploding cork coming from Anchorage.

A - Dark brown pour with some noticeable clarity, thin beige head turns to a ring pretty quickly.

S - Lots of pinot noir barrel here, dark fruit, some lactic sourness, just a bit of caramel back there. Red wine and oak covers mostly any/all dark malts there may be.

T - Still very red wine forward, almost flanders-esque, oak, weird medicinal, brett funk (which definitely leans towards the 'lactose' side of things), vinegar, pretty tart. Kinda...odd. Some hoppiness? Some caramel and molasses hiding way in there. But mostly a red-wine bomb.

M - Somewhat thin and could've used more carbonation. Some booze.

O - The pinot noir barrel is pretty nice but engulfs most of the flavor profile, the lacto funk is a decent touch, I feel like this could've/should've delivered alot more though.

Pours a dark brown colour with mocha-coloured head. Small, whispy but leaving decent lace. Looks pretty good.

Hugely Bretty and tart. Nice, deep roast on there with strong balsamic notes, a touch of washed-rind cheese and figs. Slightly intimidating, but very intriguing.

Taste is funky and tart as well. Touch of spicy espresso upfront first though, before funky notes take over midway. Distinct balsamic note, some bitter chocolate, notes of fresh figs, wood smoke and grains of paradise on the back. Finishes dry, and could use a bit more edge. Very intriguing palate though.

Decent body, texture feels nice, but doesn't quite have the bold presence demanded by the bold flavours. Some more body or more carbonation would do different things, but either one would make it seem less meek than it is now.

Quite a bizarre drop, but well-handled, with the off, funky notes and dark bitter notes clashing in a battle for flavour supremacy. Neither wins in the end, but what does win is enjoyment.
