Mongozo poured a hazy copper-orange with a very, very frothy off-white head that clung to the glass and left sheets of lacing. The aroma was sweet tropical fruits with a hint of malt and Belgian yeast making their way through the egg white like head along with the faintest note of alcohol. Taste started with plenty of malt up front followed by flavors of orange peel, mace, allspice, and candi sugar. The malt and yeast gives ground to the candy sweetness with some citrus and earthy flavors as you move it around in your mouth and swallow. The finish is crisp and acidic taming the candy sweetness and allowing the fruit flavors of mango, banana, orange, and lime to become more noticeable as well as alcohol flavors making themselves known. Aftertaste is surprisingly dry with the yeast and malt forming a soft flavor profile that slowly dissipates and only a hint of the former candi sweetness and fruit flavor evident. Mouthfeel is slightly oily with plenty of carbonation and a medium heavy body.
Overall an eccentric and unique brew made with palm nuts. Not really sure what a palm nut taste like but the beer did have an oily slickness to it and some earthy notes. Not an everyday brew but one to have for a change of pace every now and then. Cheers to the Afro-Belgian brewing tradition.

Appearance – Super-cloudy effervescent orange body with a decent head.

Smell – Faint fruity aroma of oranges and nuts.

Taste – This is good. There’s a solid malt base in there mated to a spicy orange flavor and a subtle hint of nuts.

Mouthfeel – Strong carbonation and medium-body.

Drinkability – I don’t understand the “African-style” connection but this is a fine BSDA all the way.

Cloudy and unfiltered cider color, unclear with a light and fluffy khaki head. Sweet scents of red apples and fresh yeasty bread. Fresh, sweet, and flavorful. Fresh light cider, but not overly sweet, just very nice. Nice feeling, very smooth, light and almost creamy. Good drinkability, light and easy going down.
This was just a good surprise, when I picked it up I had no real expectations, just knew it was something I had not tried and figured it was worth a taste, but now it is something I will definately be grabbing again!

This one is worth trying because of its Angolan heritage, which lends a palmnut experience. Served into a tulip glass, the pour appears a hazed, burnished orange body with a two finger beige head that lasts several minutes before fading to collar and sparse patch lace.
Aroma is candy sugar, burnt caramel, spicy hops, and an odd vegetal aroma that seems like squash.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with Belgianesque carbonation, and some satin feel.
Taste is overly malty. Caramel and toffee lend a prevailing sweetness, while a vegetal/nutty note is provided by the palm nut. The finish exhibits some spicy hops bitterness, atop a malt character that finished similar to candied squash. There is a nice earthines, from the yeast, that helps it all fall into place.
This Belgian, via Angola, is decent, overall, but not one I would look for again.

Sooo..it really is a Belgium. It is the style as you can smell the yeast and taste oil and yeast and its very unique with the nut oil. I like nuts. This is nuts! ppular with my mates. Food pairing: spicy been stew. A malty sweet and a bitter nutty taste. Light & bubbly in the mug. Light and oily on tongue unique. Needed two mates to sip up. Tip of the hat to IronDjinn for the trade.

Pours a dark orange brown with a thick off-white head. Poured in a whole bunch of sediment, probably should have held off for a bit, but I didn't think of it until too late.

Smell is belgian in many ways. Citrus and candy sugar, with a yeasty base.

Taste is pretty good, sweet up front and a bit tart in the finish. Flavours of orange peel and candy sugar, with something I can't identify(I assume from the palm nut). It may be a little bit cola flavoured.

Mouthfeel is good, but it seems that the carbonation burns out a little early. I've been sipping, and the last third is a bit flat.

Not a bad beer at all, I didn't know what to expect, but was pleased in the end.

Supposedly "brewed in strict accordance to a centuries old African recipe based on the African palmnut."

Pours a murkey brown with a very thin white head. Not particularly good looking in all candor.

Nose is sweet chocolate and big carmel and with more and more spice as it opens up in the glass. The most carmel nose I've ever smelled; not unattractive-different.

Mouthfeel is thin but the flavors are so bold and layered that mouthfeel is not significant.

Flavors of sweet and sour sauce. Tones of sweet cooked fruit, toffee and carmel and green peppers and mixed spices. There is a bit of a sour character to this beer. It is unique in flavor and worth a try. Not sure what food I would eat with this one but it's interesting on its own.

Finish is light coffee and pleasant malt.

Worth the experience; tastes good and, as I recall, was very inexpensive. Pretty unique.

Pours a pretty golden with a nice creamy head of medium sized bubbles. Aroma of rich honey and sweetbreads. Flavor follows through- generally mellow in flavor, a nice, non-complicated Belgan Golden Ale. Solid Belgian yeast traits make this tasty. As I have no idea what Palmnut is, or what flavor it brings to the party, I can't comment on its contribution to this brew. But it is enjoyable and I like it.

An African-style Belgian ale? Hmmm. According to the bottle "brewed in accordance to a centuries old African recipe based on the African palmnut." Pours a murky butterscotch, highly carbonated and fizzy. Palmnut or no palmnut - this is a Belgian beer. Sweetly yeasty/malty and quite fruity. Mildly bittersweet at the finish, but not at all cloying. Quite clean at the end. Not the novelty beer I thought it would be.

One of the most attractive beers I've ever come across. A deep hazy amber that transforms to a brilliant copper hue when held up to the light. Intense carbonation, and a massive thick off-white head capping it--I said Massive! Dense consistency and it just keeps growing and growing, up over the rim of the glass, and yet is so thick it holds its own and doesn't run down the sides. Nice presentation in the bottle as well, I like the label and the blue foil on the neck and cap.

Sweet honey and Belgian yeast up front on the nose, candied banana, dried orange and coriander spice, and what smells like nut husks or shells. Makes sense with the palmnut presence.

The flavour is a bit more elusive, malt and spice to begin with, then a dry sweetness and very oily nut texture in the middle, which lends to the overall oily mouthfeel. Bitterish bite on the finish yet it smooths out in the aftertaste.

For a "BSDA" it is very refreshing, very drinkable, the alcohol presence does not make itself overly apparent in the flavour or mouthfeel. Very unique, I'm all for another one, "mongozo!" indeed.

The pour a transparent copper color, the head mastodonic in size, the consistency of cotton candy, the lace thick and sticky sheets. Nose is that of over ripe bananas, malt, quite sweet, as one would imagine. Start is malt, lightly sweet, the top skinny, the finish is abnormally biting in its acidity, the hops sparse, the aftertaste burned away by the acidity. Drank from my De Struise Tulip

A - Pours a hazey brown colour with an off white head that retains and laces well.

S - Quite sweet on the nose with candy sugar.

T - Tastes a bit like a flanders oud bruin in that its got plenty of sweet dark fruits.

M - Light to medium body with medium carbonation.

D - I like this beer a lot even though it wasn't what OI expected.

OK, I just bought this because the label looked interesting and it was an African beer made in Belgium. Too unusual to pass up...

Poured a very hazy brown [thick apple cider] with a nice fluffy light brown head that had good lasting power. Decent lacing. Interesting to look at.

The aroma was sweet, fruity and some brandy backbone. Also some light spices and a sweetness that was sort of a honey/butterscotch. Certainly a lot going on in the aroma.

The taste was sweet, malts and sort of a light nuttiness. Some honey and mango in the background. Dark fruits were also present. Very nicely melded together.

The mouthfeel was medium bodied, cleansing and creamy.

Overall, I found this beer to be very interesting, very intriging. Quite unique and delicious. Amazing ABV since I never noticed the alcohol. I would definitely like another.

Originally sampled on 14 November 2002. I am writing this review from my notes. This beer has far too much carbonation. It is not very enjoyable to drink. As far as the aroma, you can slightly smell dates in the nose. There are many other far better Belgian beers. Find one of them

Pours a near clear reddish brown brew.

Smell is sweet and tart and fruity with a strong apple smell. This is also very spicy smelling.

Taste is sweet and fruity with a nutty flavor. Mild bitterness rounds out the flavor of the fruit. The high alcohol content of this makes it very warming to the throat and stomach as you drink it.

Mouthfeel is good.

Nice drinkable brew, I didn't expect a Belgian style beer when I bought this. A tasty brew and not a bad example of a Belgian beer.

Hazy peach orange in hue. Covered by whipped butter like head both in texture and in color. Frothy, muddled lace trails. Initial waft of juicy tangerine and guava in aroma is quickly contrasted by a pungent melange of syrup dipped hazelnuts and deeply sugary fresh cane sugar. Subdued hints of clove and ripe green apple add an herbal, familiar Belgian presence in aroma. Odd, yet enticing aromawise. Honeyish sweetness upfront in flavor is ensued by an capricious combination of tart, kuwkuat like citrus and oily, sugar dusted hazelnuts (yes I know it's made with palmnuts!) Phenol and mild ethanol adds a bitterish contrast that adds a rustic, rough edge that mingles with the mild hop bitterness, lending a surprising dryness mid palate. Becomes lightly minerally and pseudosavory late, and when coupled with the muted fruit esters, an impression of salted nuts and candied ginger remains. Once the initially prickly carbon bite diminishes, the body is revealed to be full, and the corresponding mouthfeel dextrinous and mildly oily. Finishes dry, yet with lingering notes of powered sasparilla and ginkgo coating the tastebuds. Mongozo is a whimsical, eccentric brew. It's not particularly balanced, but its sheer uniqueness continuously tempts the palate for more. It's certainly flavorful enough to hide any ethanol character. Tasty!

330 ml brown bottle, blue foil on neck. Best before 2006 date notched into back label. "so fair so good" on front label indicating their fair trade compliance. Matches Banana bottle. Pours dark brown with orange highlites, with a large off-white head. Foamy bubbles, with lacing that looks nice. Thick sediment (yeast?) on the bottom, but not like the thin suspended sediment in a wit beer.
Has the aroma of a belgian strong - yeast, sweet dried fruit, hint of bitter hops. The taste is strong alcoholic, with some nuttiness, and malt. Finish is kind of sour. Not sure what a palm nut tastes like, so not sure if I was tasting any or not. Was expecting a real "wow" after the very unique Mongozo Banana, but was not particularly outstanding in any characteristics.

Extremely murky light copper color. Nice frothy head rests atop. Moderate lacing. Yeast chunks are apparent.

Aroma is leaning on the sweet side with caramel and butterscotch. There's also some strong yeasty bready notes and some Belgian funk. An earthy element and spices round out the aroma.

Taste is strong on the bready notes. There's also a slickness to it, an oilyness really. I think this is from the palmnuts, maybe. I do in fact notice a nutty flavor in the body but I don't know if that's the palmnuts or not. Less sweet than the aroma suggests. Light fruits like banana and orange. Finish is spicy from the yeasties but also has a moderate sweetness to it with a bit of a plum/chocolate combo.

Alcohol was not noticeable. I'm really surprised its that high. Mouthfeel is slick as I said before but still has enough of a bready precense to give this beer a substantial feel. Drinkability is good for the bottle but I still would only want a few of these at one sitting. This was a nice offering and an intriguing beer.

A one-of-a-kind beer, brewed with African palm nuts and you are supposed to drink this from a gourd. Maybe that's a good idea because the thick white head with serious carbonation needs a wide mug. An excellent beer with more malt than hops. Pricey at $3.59 for 12oz but definitely worth trying.

Pours a clear amber color. The head is quite generous, sligtly off-shite with nice retention. The aroma is quite complex, surprisingly. There are the typical lager qualities of malt aroma, and also some nuts, slightly woody and grassy aroma, as well as some more yeast. The taste is a bit sweet and slightly sour, followed by a minimal bitterness. There’s some nuttiness in the back present. It has a dry feel, but otherwise drinkable and pleasant.

I passed on this beer on several occasions because it looked more like a novelty beer and did not take it seriously. After reading it's description, I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did. Good stuff. Did not expect the belgian fruitiness, spiciness, candiness, or yeastiness. Very rich with dates and figs with background notes of raisons, prunes, peaches, pears, and papayas. Well rounded and complex. It has a sesame seed flavor and oily texture that I can only assume is from the addition of palmnuts. Though not as good as the many outstanding Belgian beers, it's certainly gained respect in my book.

Poured into a small tulip it forms an easily managed fizzy white head that falls to a solid cover. No lace. Body is copper with a slight haze.

smell like I was dropped off at a prune factory, except the prunes are in liquid form mixed with some medicine. Quite medicinal to me and the drinkability and taste factor suffers. Suggestions of chocolate deep in the backdrop never really become a factor. Tart at times, more so in the smell but it creeps in when its cold and fades as it warmed. It shows some Belgian Strong Dark ale characteristics but it has a near golden body? Whatever, I'm not going to trip on mouse turds here its just not all that good no matter where we put it.

Notes: The taste was the best part of this offering which gives it a big boost but its just an ok brew at best.

12oz bottle picked up for curiosity and a chance at finding a gem. This is no gem, this is not a belgian strong dark ale and finally this is not worth another sampling.

Wow, an African beer that I really enjoyed. Wait, it's brewed in Belgium...by one of my favorite breweries. Well, It certaintly had a distinct tast and I haven't any African influenced beers so I really enjoy this experience. Definatley tastes Belgian. Sweet bananna flavors with a little tropical fruit sourness and even a little dryness from the yeast. Very complex beer. I enjoyed this beer and I wonder what other recipes are hiding in the African culture.

Copper to brown colour, pours a big head and there's akways some foam on it. Smells is toasted, hints of chocolate, prunes and tropical fruits. A bit light feeling on the tongue, sweet (but not too sweet) flavor, tastes of chocolate, cinnamon, a hint of vanilla,caramel, prunes and tropical fruits are present as well. Two different mongozos in two days that really surprised me.

The only authentic African beer recipe still being replicated. Every other beer brewed in Africa comes from a German-based beer recipe. Sadly enough, Henrique Kabia, who lived in the Netherlands via Angola, brought this family recipe to Europe and has since passed about a year ago. In Chokwe native tongue, Mongozo means "to your health", which seems rather global in salutation, wouldn't you say? I review his work as if he were in good health to read it. Pours a glowing peachy brown color with a nice beige head. I've never had an African palmnut, but I smell nut in the aroma as well as some tropical fruit esters and a good amount of malt; hops are indiscernable. A faint nutskin astringency shows up in the taste as well as some more defined malty sweetness, further nutty fruitiness, and, most certainly, yeast. The beer as a whole is exotic, to say the least. Carbonation is good, and each sip is exotic, it never gets old. I've had this beer numerous times, and it's always good to fall back on it if you get bored with same traditional Belgian styles.
