On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

A very drinkable IPA, though it lacks complexity. It's a very leafy, herbal IPA. Lots of earth and dirt-like hops, though the flavors come together nicely. Unique in that way. Mild pine character as well. This was a welcome accompaniment to the Almanac Dinner at Churchill's, but certainly didn't steal the show. No need to revisit, though I'm glad I had a couple glasses of this.

On tap at Churchill's Pub & Grille in San Marcos, CA.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy bone head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus zest, and slight herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with earthy and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a prettygood beer that is quite hop forward and earthy.

On tap at Library Alehouse for a tap takeover with 9 offerings.

A: Pours a clear orangish yellow with a thin (1/4") white head which leaves stringy lace.

N: Grapefruit/citrus with herbal notes. Very fresh and bright hops. Wonderful aroma.

T: Pine dominates with some malt for balance.

M: Medium body and carbonation. Bitter and dry finish.

O: Fairly straight forward and basic IPA with a nice smell of fresh hops. If you see this, then get it.

This is a review of Almanac’s Single Origin IPA (as brewed with Chinook hops). Not sure if this will be a repeat brew, or an on-going single-origin series, or what. So there.

This pours a light golden-yellow. There’s pine and honey-lemon notes on the aroma, with a pleasing hoppy citrus-pine character flavor. A light bitterness turns into a long finish with some delicate piney resin. Would love to revisit this one if I see it again.

Lovely scent of orange blossoms and pine sap. Golden color in the tall snifter with a modest foam.

An interesting showcase for the hops, which are described as "Chinook Hops from Kuchinski Family Hop Farm in Clearlake, California." Brewed with Vienna and Crystal malts. Not overly bitter but it's all about the hops. A stony bitter aftertaste. Rich and tangy, definitely not sweet but a pleasant maltiness defines the background. Eventually it's along bitter spiral, but quite a nice IPA. Hop fanciers will want to check this out, the first IPA from Almanac.

On tap at Church Key in San Francisco.
