First Almanac offering, thanks akang! I'm fucking hyped.

375ml Bottle poured in Tired Hands wine glass

A: Orange. gold tint. Pretty hazy and well carbonated. Half an inch foamy head, clinging to the glass. Some yeasties floating around in the bottom of the glass.

S: Strong smell as soon as I cracked the bottle. Crazy amount of strawberry and stone fruits in the nose, but I'm also able to pick up on the citrus/zesty aromas in this. Following are the cocktail of wild belgian yeasts and very nice oak. Pretty funky on the nose. Excited.

T: This is one of the only sours I've had made with fresh strawberries, and I'm really fuckin' happy drinking this. The strawberries are coming through nicely with the light, biscuity malts. Picking up on the white wine and citrus(nectarines) towards the end.

M: It's refreshing, fruity and incredible easy to drink. I think the carbonation is pretty spot on. Get some for ya ma

O: This beer impressed me, and I am happy to have more Almanac sours/barrel aged beers coming my way. It's drinking great right now, the strawberries/nectarines are shining. but that doesn't mean to say this beer won't improve/or change with age. Although it is funky, and satisfyingly sour right now, it's wild, and will only continue to get it funky. If your in it for the fruit, I'd pop that fucker open now. Real quality beer.

Bottled Summer 2013
Poured into a standard tulip glass

Appearance: (4)
Pours a hazy golden with peach highlights. A tiny bubbled, 2 fingers tall, pure white head sprouts and quickly falls, leaving no lacing behind. There is liberal amount of spent proteins and even some strawberry seeds floating in the glass, which is pretty neat.

Aroma: (4.5)
Tart, acidic lemon perforates your nostrils immediately, with an underlying lactic, sour cherry note. These traditional sour notes are accompanied by a huge presence of fresh picked strawberries. Layered neatly on top of the strawberries is a complex, musty cellared tone from the souring bacterias and the Brettanomyces; sun warmed leather, wet hay and some light tangy pineapple notes that matured brettanomyces can give off. As the beer warms, more and more of the fresh nectarine character comes out to play. Very tropical, refreshing nose.

Taste: (4.25)
Much more immediately tart then the fruit forward nose makes you expect; Bright, tart lemon juice explodes onto your palate immediately, with more that typical cherry pie filling tone sours have. After this initial blast of acidity, you're greeted with big, slightly creamy notes of juicy nectarines and strawberries. The fresh fruits are coated with a slight funky, musty character from the bacteria and wild yeast. The beer finishes pretty dry, but not nearly as sour as the initial taste would lead you to believe. Long lingering notes of fresh, juicy strawberries, nectarine flesh and lemon juice. Behind these fruit overtones, there is a light vanilla impression and light tannins imparted by the wine barrel.

Mouthfeel: (4.5)
Light bodied with an interesting, creamy texture. Moderate to high carbonation.

Overall: (4.25)
This is a very crisp, unique sour that might not be the most complex wild ale made, but it certainly harnesses the raw fruit character of nectarines and strawberries. This is the first Almanac beer I've had, but I'm definitely going to try more of their offerings after this awesome beer. Highly recommended(name another strawberry/nectarine sour ale)

Bottle (2013)

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

A really incredible entry into the Farmer's Reserve Series. The aroma along is enough for this to be something truly special. It's reminiscent of a strawberry shortcake with creamy, sweet vanilla ice cream on top, all turned into a sour Popsicle. Really exceptional. The flavor is just as good. True, authentic, juicy strawberry character, nice vanilla and oak notes, with a fairly large sour presence. My favorite in the series, though Farmer's Reserve 4 is also quite incredible.

Bottle shared by Ryan I believe. Served in a Cantillon tulip.

A - White foam settles to wisps, a thick collar, and no lace. Hazy, pale golden orange body.

S - Loads of nectarine and strawberry; quite nice. Some light funky yeast, and a good mix of tart and sweet flavors although I think those notes inherent in the fruits rather than from bacteria. Malt character is a tad buttery; or perhaps this is Chardonnay aged?

T - The taste isn't quite as good, with more of an oaky seltzer quality to it, and far less fruit potency. Pale malts super the mixture of wood and fruit, and there isn't a lot of funk or wild yeast character. No discernible alcohol either. Fruit does intensify as the beer warms.

M - Medium-light body, pleasant carbonation, and a dry, tannic, and oaky texture.

D - A nice fruit beer that has only mild 'wild' characteristics at this stage. Still, quite enjoyable, particularly the aroma. Definitely the best thing I've had from Almanac; look forward to trying other beers in this series. Very easy to drink.
