Notes/Commercial Description:
This barrel-aged wild ale is named for our San Francisco neighborhood and pays tribute to the Flanders Red style of beer. Aged in wine barrels, this lightly tart ale is brewed with California Rainier cherries using a house blend of wild yeasts, bacteria and SF sourdough yeast. Pair this complex ale with ripe figs & blue cheese or seafood bouillabaisse.

The beer pours a tarnished copper color with a dense population of floating particulates and no head after settling. The nose is funky cherries carried by some syrupy sweetness, grain, and a hint of ethanol. The taste is aggressively tart cherries upfront followed by chewy yeast and lingering malt and cherries in the finish. This is a potent sour that finishes with bone dry cherry-lime acidity, minimal acetone, modest complexity, chewy yeast, negligible carbonation, and a distinct cherry presence throughout. Although this is not my favorite almanac it's still a great sour that doesn't disappoint.

375ml bottle purchased for $10.99 which was a little pricey for a brewery I'm not familiar with. Light orange color, no head really. Aroma is the mildest hint of strawberries, nothing like an oudbeitje, touch of malt and and brett. Flavor was easily identified as a wild ale but the strawberries just were not there for me. Overall it felt overpriced for the quality and not much better than the farmer's reserve blackberry.

Served from a batch 2 375ml bottle into a HF stemmed tulip.

A- Hazy pinkish/red with no head.

S- Fanders funk, tart cherries, lots of oak, plum, blackberry, cider vinegar.

T- Much of the same fruit from the aroma but showcases tart cherries beautifully. Tons of oak and cherry.

M- Hedium carbonation and body. Very sour. easy to drink.

Overall- Really nice Flanders style ale. Cherry is awesome in this beer.

375ml bottle into tulip. Batch 1, bottled Autumn 2013.

A: Pours a clear iced tea color with a finger of fizzy light tan head that quickly bubbled away into a fuzzy collar.
S: Tart and lightly acidic notes of vinous wine barrel and musty cherries. I get a hint of something tropical or berry-like as well.
T: Buttery oak, vinous wine barrel, and lighty sweet cherries. The finish has a musty quality alongside notes of barrel spice, a kiss of caramel, and slight raisin. The aftertaste is lightly tart with hints of lemon and grape juice, acid, and slight berry. There's also a rock candy-like sweetness overall.
M: Medium body, good balance between greasy/drying oak and sweet/drying cherry tannins. Soft and frothy carbonation.
O: Very clean and easy drinking. Just the right amount of sour and sweet. Not the most complex, but extremely enjoyable.
