American Wild Ale |  7.50% ABV

Notes/Commercial Description:
This barrel-aged wild ale is named for our San Francisco neighborhood and pays tribute to the Flanders Red style of beer. Aged in wine barrels, this lightly tart ale is brewed with California Rainier cherries using a house blend of wild yeasts, bacteria and SF sourdough yeast. Pair this complex ale with ripe figs & blue cheese or seafood bouillabaisse.

A - Weirdly orange considering it's a flanders red brewed with cherries. Head dissipates very quickly. For a moment I thought it was going to vanish completely as in a barleywine, but an uneven oval of foam lingers.

S - Smells sour and a little funky.

T - Much cleaner and more refreshing that the Oude Kriek Vieille I had just before, but with much less depth and complexity. Cherry is not easily discernible, nor is funk.

M - Starts off a little fizzy, but improves as it warms and sits.

O - Very sour, and refreshing, yet lacks the wood character, complexity and funk which make for a more interesting brew.

#400

Batch #2

P: Cloudy, gelatin almost, apricot body with a thin effervescent white cap.

S: Tart sourness with a dirty fart bubbling in the background.

T/M: Funky mouth puckering sourness. Aged granny apple cider and rotten wood. Brings tear jerkers to mind. Astringent and vivacious feel.

O: My teeth hurt from this sour monster.

The beer pours a tarnished copper color with a dense population of floating particulates and no head after settling. The nose is funky cherries carried by some syrupy sweetness, grain, and a hint of ethanol. The taste is aggressively tart cherries upfront followed by chewy yeast and lingering malt and cherries in the finish. This is a potent sour that finishes with bone dry cherry-lime acidity, minimal acetone, modest complexity, chewy yeast, negligible carbonation, and a distinct cherry presence throughout. Although this is not my favorite almanac it's still a great sour that doesn't disappoint.
