Notes/Commercial Description:
This barrel-aged wild ale is named for our San Francisco neighborhood and pays tribute to the Flanders Red style of beer. Aged in wine barrels, this lightly tart ale is brewed with California Rainier cherries using a house blend of wild yeasts, bacteria and SF sourdough yeast. Pair this complex ale with ripe figs & blue cheese or seafood bouillabaisse.

Reviewed from notes on a few-day-old bottle that had been recapped. Enjoyed 13 August 2013.

A: Pours a hazy (almost cloudy) brownish-red/amber/ruby with minimal head of color I could not discern properly. Looks pretty good, though.

S: Smell is dominated by soured cherries -- this smells really tart! A little earthy funk from the brett is evident, but mostly this is wood and cherry and it smells delicious.

T/M: Mouth-puckeringly sour cherries, as expected. This beer is earthy with a little earthy funk, but so full of cherries. Pretty delicious, really. Mouthfeel is medium with a light carbonation (although I expect it was a bit more carbed a few days ago) that comes off just a little oily in a good way, leaving a nice coating tartness lingering alongside a sweet cherry finish.

O: I am quite impressed. This is a lot like a slightly muted Supplication to me; I'd be interested to have the two side-by-side.

A- Golden honey. Looks sweet and heavy for 7.5%. Tiny bubbles
S- Puckery cherry, acidic grape barrel, biscuit
T- Sweet then sour, finishes biscuity (definitely get the sourdough). Slightly fruity but more honey biscuit. Touch of funk. Very tasty
M- Small punctuated bubbles that still let your tongue taste the beer. Heavy for 7.5%
0- Outstanding beer. In the world of sours there's so much to explore that I would imagine trying others before diving back into this one, but a great beer I would buy again and enjoy.

Fantastic sour beer. Poured from a bottle into a flute. Bottle reads: "Bottled Autumn 2013" enjoyed about 1 month after purchase.

A - Amber with small bubbles. Color reminds me of an ale I'm not particularly fond of: Anchor Steam. Slightly foggy with 3/4 inch of white head in a flute, but overall a beautiful pour.

S - Smell of sticky salt water taffy, young grapes, beer-soaked bar wood (only thing bringing it down), devils share of a wine barrel.

T - Beautiful. Slightly flowery. Makes my tongue curl a little. Nice and sour, but I would like to taste this a little higher on the sour-intensity. Hard, unripened green apples. Yeast; I can definitely taste the sourdough that they sought to add to the beer. Aftertaste of ripe lemon juice.

M - Puckered up nicely. A little more heavy on the tongue than I expected - actually a really nice feeling. Extremely refreshing on a warm, sunny San Francisco fall Sunday. Leaves a slight coat behind, enhancing the aftertaste.

O - A really good sour. Easy to drink. Not sure if I would want to pay $11 for a 12oz bottle again, when I can buy a fantastic 22oz stout or IPA at $7-$9, but if I can find it under $10, I will definitely pick up more. Highly recommend you give it a try.

Another really fantastic sour from Almanac. Though not particularly attractive, the aroma and flavor make up for it in spades. Huge notes of cherry Fruit Roll Up, wine notes, oak, and a bit of sourdough yeast character come through nicely. The wine character is quite pronounced in the flavor, especially as the beer warms. I've been wildly impressed with most everything I've had from Almanac's sour lineup, and this one is fantastic as well.
