Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Piddmeista on 07-25-2013

This barrel-aged wild ale is named for our San Francisco neighborhood and pays tribute to the Flanders Red style of beer. Aged in wine barrels, this lightly tart ale is brewed with California Rainier cherries using a house blend of wild yeasts, bacteria and SF sourdough yeast. Pair this complex ale with ripe figs & blue cheese or seafood bouillabaisse.

Really delicious. It's extremely tart, but the cherries come through on the backend and this is very drinkable.

One of a large number of samples I had at the Extreme Beer Fest in Boston 3/21/32014. Great sour and cherry flavors!

Excellent mouth puckering sour with an awesome cherry aroma. Not picking up much of the wine barrel aging, just some hints of must in the nose. Delicious malty backbone and very subtle oak in the finish.

Bottled October 2014 - Batch #3: Pours a completely cloudy reddish copper color with a 2-3 finger foamy light tan head that was full of bubbles that popped and dissipated over a minute, making a hissing sound like a shaken up soda as it went down. The brew left no lacing and the Cerise Sour Blond made the same sounds so this must be an Almanac thing and I think it’s pretty cool.

Smells of cherry, sour fruit, candy or fruity medicine like Tums, grains, white wine, earthy funk, woody oak notes and sour juice aromas. The nose has the hard to describe red wine thing going on that makes this seem 60/40 beer to wine since there are a lot of earthy notes that all seem to blend together. I detect some honey and flowers from a few inches away too, very interesting.

Tastes fruity up front with the cherry very present and mixing with grains as well as yeast, then the shift goes acidic and tart with sour fruit juice, berries, a mix of chilled red and white wine, a little cracker, pepper and some smoky oak notes. Less earthy and more fruity than the nose, this hides the ABV completely and is not too sour, not too tart but yet pretty complex with a backbone that feels slightly malty with a touch of dry hops or tea leaf. Would love to have this on a hot summer night with a spicy fish dish or a cheese platter as suggested on the bottle.

Mouthfeel is light bodied, smooth and thin feeling with very mild carbonation that is a little fizzy on the tongue and fades off sweet and sour. A really enjoyable beer overall and one I will definitely have again.

Thanks to dbannister for the trade.

A: Cloudy ruby red color with dark orange hues. Not much of a head to start and just a few bubbles as it settles. Kind of a flat beer, but I find that it works.

S: Tart sour yeast, sour bactieria, big fruity - mainly cherries with some raspberry and strawberry notes, good amount of funk. A stong and pleasant neutral oak barrel presense melds everything togather. Fairly simple inputs but the outputs are dymanic.

T: I want to do this justice b/c it is a damn fine beer. This has a high tart level. Lots of fruit and barrel. Notes of sour-ass cherries are the dominate flavor. Digging for minor notes you get berries: raspberries, cranberries, and strawberries (bright red flavore), and a strong neutral-oak finish. A little dusty and a little funky.

M: Low carb and a little thick. Smooth, highly tart, and moderate body.

O: This is a good example of how some US breweries are bring it now, very close to their Belgian fore-fathers. This is a top-notch Kriek, hands down. I'm big on this beer. It has a low-coarse carb feel, but the texture and flavors balance that out to create something very similar to GI Loloita. I will search this out again.
