Poured nearly black with dark ruby highlights. Tan head, with thick, heavy lacing. Very nice!

Nose chocolate-like, with sweet and roasty malt tones. Again, pleasing.

Tastes similarly roasty, with a touch of burnt chocolate. Very tasty, full flavored and sessionable. Top!

I'm not normally a fan of mild ales, but I tried this on recommendation of a trusted friend. Very impressed.

A- At first glance, this brew appeared to be solid black. Much like a porter or stout. But, when held up to the light, the tiniest glimmer of light made it's way through. Mocha colored head with wonderful retention and lacing.

S- Roasted malts up front. Dark chocolate, coffee, hazelnut, and a hint of sweet malts.

T- Sweet chocolate malts, hazelnut, and toasted notes up front quickly followed by a coffee-like, pleasant, roasted character. Possibly some vanilla in the aftertaste.

M- Very creamy yet very light-bodied. Perhaps the most appealing quality of this beer.

I'll definitely return for another.

Draft at brewpub.

Poured clear dark brown color with a moderate brown frothy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Medium body and soft carbonation. Medium toasted malt aroma. Medium bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration.

My expectations were met with a good drinkable brew.

On tap at the brewpub.

This beer lives up to its name quite nicely. Lovely dark appearance under a small light tan head. Smell is mild malt and mild hops, and the taste follows the smell precisely: fine, light chocolate maltiness and a decent bread-dough flavor. Mouthfeel is nice and round, and is the best feature of this made-for-a-session beer. Very drinkable.

This was served cool in a tulip pint at the brewpub in New Albany.

A - Very dark brown w/ almost no light passing through the shade of deep mahagony w/ a head so thin it is like an eclipse.

S - Deep roasted malt odors w/ tinges of malasses and very faint cherry-like scents and subtle cocoas and coffee aromas.

M - Vry much in the English tradition of low carbonation, subtle flavors that are sweet and robust w/out any overtly bitter or off. Smooth and deep complexity, finished very gently but notes of fruit and malt linger.

T - Very flavorful w/ a nice plum fruitiness and cool coffee-like earthy cocoa flavor. The taste has a hazelnut mild roast taste and just well rounded w/ light hop spice and caramel-like waves of English toffee sweetness.

D - This should be more available as a style. Session worthy, flavorful and intense in the way that rest notes accentuate the solos in jazz. I have loved this style for a while and NABC has this one nailed. It makes me want to brew a mild even more when I taste one as well mades as this. It has custard smoothness and truffle like depth that lingers - just top notch.

this is a great english mild, similat to the nut brownish style

really though, it's a light bodied, but dark colored ale, with a hint of malty sweetness and a certain poundability

great on draft if you're planning on having a few, pretty low alcohol, great body with good flavor

Another pleasure to drink. Reminescent of a German Schwatzbier. The bready and yeasty flavors and aromas that I expected, along with moderate barley malt sweetness. Throw in a mild black malt flavor without any graininess. Light molassas and walnut flavors and perhaps a hint of chocolate. The texture is light and airy to the mouth and leaves a light black malt bitterness. Never chalky or charcoal-like. But, with other Albanian brews, the carbonation is very low and has a disapointing foamstand and lacing. Otherwise, a joy.

Deeply dark coloration, slimmish head, tan and lightly dotted...

Nose of cocoa and nuts...charcoal and maple, but all played very lightly...nice..to a point...shall we say...

Taste: smooooth, light on the palate, very easy, yet full of character, if not too full of body...loads of malt, lots of taste, much more full of taste than I'd expect from an English mild...I like it, it's good... a much ballsier mild than I'd been anticipating...very worthy. Very good...nice...Hooray, New Albany, and all the New Albanians!

Another outstanding beer from Mr. Borchers and friends.

Beer poured very dark, almost black. I typically associate this color with porters and stouts. Don't be confused by this beer's appearance. It's most definately a dark mild.

Since this was a hand pump cask-conditioned keg, the beige head was very small and very low density. I did not deduct points for lack of head. Nevertheless, it managed to leave a little lacing.

Smell was fresh and simple. Mild malts wafting pleasantly from the glass, minimal if any hops. Sublte fragrance of nuttiness.

Taste was simply outstanding. Mild nutty malt, perhaps a hint of toffee or some other sweet characteristic. Simple and very clean. This beer actually makes you feel refreshed as you drink it, as a glass of water might on a very hot day.

I ended up not sipping, but taking larger drinks as it was so good, I just couldn't help myself. And immediately ordered a second. And would have done so, even if it weren't free.

Special thanks to Mike to buying a keg for Rich O's patrons and then giving it away for free!!!

Muddy brown color with a thin, but creamy head. Chocolate, espresso, almonds and a subtle hop presence in the nose. Taste is more of the same, with a consitent undercurrent of chocolate and coffee flavors. This beer goes one step further, however, opening up with some nutty malt, toffee, and moderate hop flavor. Delicious, really. Mouthfeel is wonderfully smooth and only moderately carbonated. Drinkability is outstanding as this ale abounds with delicious flavor and low alcohol. It's hard to drink just a pint of this stuff.

I have to admit that I may be a little biased when it comes to reviewing this beer... I really enjoyed this beer, and that is in part because it is an underappreciated, and hard-to-find style. That doesn't change the fact that this is a damn fine beer.

The pour was just what I would expect... deep mahogany with a 1/3 inch head that quickly dissipates into a fine halo. Aroma of malt, coffee, a touch of chocolate, and some underlying earthy / herbal characteristics. The flavor of this beer is outstanding... coffee jumps to the forefront, and slowly surrenders to some toasted malt, and a sweet, nutty flavor. Some chocolate sneaks through at times, and I can detect just enough herbal bitterness to give it some balance. Mouthfeel is very smooth, with low carbonation and a light body.

I actually gave quite a bit of thought before giving this beer a 5 for drinability. Chalkies had several other high-quality beers on tap, but after trynig this one, I couldn't stop ordering it... it's so easy to drink, not at all filling, and probably the best session beer I can remember having.

Another.... please!
