This red rye IPA combines Falconer's flight and Falconer’s 7C’s hops, along with crystal rye malt to form the perfect storm of flavor, aroma, and color. Pour it in a glass and get shipwrecked in the ruby hues, citrus notes, and distinct rye bite. No lack of flavor here, so quit playing with your dinghy and round the breakwall.

I had a can of this in a restaurant in Michigan last summer on vacation. This is one of my favorite style of beers and I found this to be a very good example of the style featuring rye spiciness and IPA hops.

The eradication of the pesky backlog CANtinues as The CANQuest (tm) racks 'em up, sets 'em down & generally does its own thing!
From the CAN: "Native brewed in Marquette, Michigan"; "We at Blackrocks Brewery are proud to call Marquette, Michigan our home. Our name is inspired by the Black Rocks, located just north of town, where natives and visitors have gathered to enjoy Lake Superior for generations."; "We love beer. You love beer. Let's get together.": "This Red Rye IPA combines Falconer's Flight and Falconer 7C's hops, along with Malt and Rye to form the perfect storm of flavor, aroma and color. Wow! So much nautical terminology! Without having even CANducted the Crack!, let alone the Glug, this beer already speaks to me as a retired U.S. Navy sailor!
The Crack! was extremely loud & being that there had been a bit of interior pressure, I went with a nice, slow, gentle Glug into the awaiting glass. If nothing else, it was well-carbonated as it formed two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown with good retention that left behind great lacing without any help from yours truly. Color was a gorgeous Deep-Amber/Light-Copper to Copper with NE-quality clarity. Nose was so spicy and peppery that it was quite easy to identify the presence of Rye! Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but still big for the style. The earthiness of the beer was seCANd to none! They did not mention malts, but they were lightly roasted, giving it an earthy, toastiness that perfectly CANplimented the earthy spiciness of the rye. Admittedly, you had best like the taste of Rye in beer for this to have a ChANce, but for me, it was right up my darkened film noir alley. Peppery, minty, cool, dry, earthy - all worthwhile descriptors for this one. Finish had the dry, minty coolness that I have noted in several beers over the past few days. Mmm.

Brown in color with minimal light penetration. There's a densely creamy quarter inch brown head. Heavy lacing. The aroma is of earthy rye and resinous pine. I'm tasting a very spicy earthy rye flavor with just a suggestion of piney hops towards the back of the palate and in the fade. The mouth is lightly chewy and sticky, apropos to style.

Thanks goes out to strohme2 for this brew.
12 oz. Can
Pours a pretty nice clean/clear golden amber color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice small creamy off-white head, which leaves some pretty nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, some malts, citrusy, nice rye. The taste is hoppy, kinda malty, citrusy, rye. Medium body. Overall, a pretty tasty brew.

12oz can, sample from the brewery.
Lots of lacing action on the glass, pours a bright dark amber red hue. Orangey, plumy spicy, rind-like, bready, and punget nose. Deep smoothness, semi-creamy body. Deep rye maltiness, bread and a bit of spiciness. Semi-aggressive hopping with orange rind, pith, and tea on the palate. Ample hop bitterness, good balance. Fruity and warming, bitter and toasty. Very enjoyable to knock back.

Consumed on September 2nd, 2016. Poured from an undated can into one of those fancy Sierra Nevada IPA glasses.
Moderate pour results in almost four fingers of light yellow-biege colored head composed of fine, dense bubbles. That head hangs around a very long time, providing not only a thicker-than-normal cap atop the beer but also some spotty sheeting. Beer color is somewhere between dark honey and light amber and only slightly hazy.
Aroma is tame, with sweet amber malt and very mild peppery rye. Some raw, herbal hop character and garlic and onions when glass is aggressively swirled.
Flavor is somewhat sweet up front with caramel malt, segueing into restrained black pepper and rye notes. Low bitterness on finish.
Mouthfeel is somewhat creamy and a little thick. No carbonation bite.
Overall, I suspect this can of beer is past its best-by date, but without any discernable markings to tell the consumer so, well... you get what is probably a faded, mellow beverage. Is this how it is supposed to taste? Who knows? Not me. If I knew the sample I was going to get was fresh, I would try this again. Otherwise, pass.
