16oz glass at the hoppy brew tap takeover at Beer Rev YEGDT.

This beer appears a glassy, medium bronzed amber colour, with a thin cap of wispy and weakly bubbly off-white head, which leaves some rather sparse outlying specks of island atoll lace around the glass as it quite quickly abates.

It smells of grainy, bready pale and caramel malt, prominent, yet indistinct light orchard fruit notes, and faint earthy, weedy, and weakly citrusy hops. The taste is somewhat grainy and doughy caramel malt, more strangely understated and mixed-up beyond belief citrusy, leafy, and piney hops, and a subtle booziness having its third smoke outside the gate.

The bubbles are pretty tame and innocuous for the most part, the body an adequate medium weight, and not particularly smooth, the hops picking this point in time to make a minor fuss. It finishes hoppy, uber-alles, the west coast pushiness hardly worth questioning at this juncture.

A pleasant enough IPA, the grainy and hoppy measures working it out, as it were - even though the former does well to dominate the conversation. Nice to be able to try this so far from the purported limited distribution zone, eh?

A very nice tribute to one of my all-time favorite watering holes, Seattle's Latona Pub. I got a lot of 'cat pee' on the nose with this one, and more kiwi fruit on the taste than I have for any other IPA I've previously tried. In fact, the flavor was sort of like kiwi-grapefruit-mint juice (the Nelson Sauvin figuring large, I suppose). Inviting, interesting, and refreshing--but perhaps slightly lacking that sweet and sturdy malt base which I personally prefer on offerings of this type. It was, at any rate, my first beer from Sound, and it makes me want to seek out their other offerings--because, ultimately, this was very good.

According to the folks at the brewery, this was brewed once for Latona's 15th anniversary (in Seattle), and once again for the brewery.

Pours a golden ale with a solid sheet of white foam and leaves rope lace. Grapefruit, tangerine, mango, mint and grass - really digging the fruit in the nose here - a winner from this aspect. Nice sweetness combated with a healthy bitterness accented with peach and hemp and grapefruit rinds. Medium bodied with moderate on hi carb and a wet, slick finish. A really good beer. I've had over five pints in the last three days.

This brewery kills IPA's for me. Love 'em.

A: Poured a clear pale golden color with a modest white head, decent amount of bubbles and some sticky white lacing

S: Tropical fruits and floral notes. Smells so nice and fresh!

T: Initial blast of tropical fruit, citrus and flowers with a nice biiterness that starts about midway and finishes up. There is a little slickness to it on the finish.

M: Light medium bodied, well carbonated, bitterness sits on the palate for a while.

O: Very good IPA! This should be the new Sound mainstay IPA

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a lightly hazy honey golden yellow color with about 1/2 inch of bright white head that had moderate retention and decent lacing.

The aroma was a big blast of combined pine and citrus hops that added up to a unique lupulin scent. There was just enough malt in the background to provide some balance. The flavor profile was pretty similar, but the malt had stronger presence, and that really let the hop flavors shine. The pine hops had the front, and there was a nicely bitter citrus finish.

The body was a bit fuller tan typical for the style, but not heavy or thick, and the citrus lingered over an otherwise clean finish. Drinkability was good, my pint went quickly, and I'm considering another pint. Overall, a nice take on the style. I'm not sure how much of this will be available outside the brewery and the Latona Pub (it's my understanding that this brewed first as an anniversary beer beer for the pub), maybe it'll become a rotating or seasonal brew. Certainly worth a shot if you see it.
