I am always intrigued when I see a sign for "Chili, Burgers, Beer," so a stop had to be made. It is your typical bar feel on the inside (it was so refreshing to be in a no smoking establishment- take note, Michigan). The service was decent, but I feel like we were left sitting there for too long sometimes, but she was polite and even gave us the appetizers at discounted price even though we ordered later than the special was offered. The beer selection was decent, there was some Dogfish, Sierra Nevada (currently out), Sam Adams, and their own concoction- the Hard Times Lager. The beer was surprisingly satisfying and flavorful- no gripes there. The food was served piping hot, mmm... I was pleasantly surprised by this unintended stop. Next time I'm in the area I'll have to make it a point to go back.

I know that I have no place in giving advice, but the chili would be even more wonderful with some beans in it. Just a thought...

I wouldn't necessarily call this a beer bar, but a pretty good restruant. It is a chain, so you'll get pretty much the same atmosphere at each one. That having been said, it does have a good old-time kind of feel, furniture, etc. It is generally a good place to have a beer and eat some food (especially several kinda of excellent chili). I had no problem with service except a fairly long wait. As with many of the restruant/ bars in College Park, the price is good and the atmosphere enjoyable but it tends to be crowded during the dinner rush. If you're looking for a good place to eat and relax, check it out.

Hard times isn't really a great place to go if you just want to drink. I'd say it's better if you want to get a cheap, hearty, good meal and have some good beer with it.
The beers on tap, last i checked, were old dominion, Sierra nev, yuengling and i think wild goose ale.
This isn't really much of a neighborhood bar kind of place. it's more of a cheap restaurant. i do recommend going there, though, if you're with a group and want to have a good time for not a lot of money.

Wow. No one has reviewed this place since 2007... probably because there isn't a whole lot to say about it. It's a typical chain restaurant. The decor has a kind of "wild west"-like theme. Laid back atmosphere.

I asked our waitress which beers they had on tap and she rattled off a list of 8 or so practically without stopping for breath. There were some decent choices in there: SN, DFH 60 min, Clipper City, etc., which is definitely better than what you find in most chain restaurants.

We were there with a group of about 20 and the waitress was very good at remembering who ordered what... impressively so. Drafts are half off during happy hour.

It's a decent place to grab a pint, but don't expect a great selection or any rare beers.

Hard Times Cafe in College Park is really more of a restaurant than a bar, but they have a pretty decent selection of draft beers.

Their food menu consists mostly of chili, things made with chili, things served with chili, or things seasoned with chili. A little monotonous, but not bad grub. If nothing else, it's good food to wash down with good beer.

They have a dozen taps, at least ten of which have micro-brews or imports. When I was there selections included their Hard Times Lager which is contract brewed by Old Dominion, Old Dominion Brown Ale, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Dogfish Head Pale Ale, DeGroen's Maerzen and Guinness. A decent variety and all pretty decent.

The Hard Times Café franchise in College Park is a decent place to get a beer and a burger and a bowl of chilly. They have about 6 beers on tap, some of which rotate. When I go I always look for some Dogfish of SN offerings. They also sometime have Old Dominion beers, including the Tupper’s Hop pocket. The service is friendly and adequate but don’t expect extensive beer knowledge. The food is good but nothing special. They do have a nice out door seating area, only compromised by the views it affords of the parking lot and US Rt. 1. One big draw is the quarter wing deal they have on Wednesday afternoons.

Hard Times is a MD/DC/VA institution. Each location has a fun, rustic sort of atmosphere and the service is usually pretty darn good. But that's not why you go.

Chili and Beer.
The chili is great. (as a Texan, I know) They have a 4 kinds with a mulitude of ways to eat it and they continue to add new dishes.

Beer (why we're here, right)
At least 10 -12 taps with several local and microbrews. They even have their own label.

Hard Times is a great palce for very good, inexpensive food and a great beer. If you want fancy, go elsewhere.

Do Not make a mistake and go to this place, if you are looking for a good beer, served right. I am an IPA fan. I tried a DFH 60 and a CC Loose Canon and
they both tasted almost the same....too fizzy-
like the brew lines had not been cleaned .
Neither had any character or flavor . This place does not do it right .
And the chili was the worst . Ground beef ,lots of oil, some seasoning , not much else.
I wish I had read this review before I went there.
Your Welcome.
p.s. I only went there once ... maybe it was a bad night .
