In Newburgh, killing some time before brewery opening. Up atop the hill, far enough from the waterfront. Hey, remember when Liberty was, you know, kind of sketchy? Yes, well that was earlier today actually. Okay it ain’t that bad, the neighborhood’s just taking a slower approach at gentrification than others, but it’s okay. Spun the corner and parked...

Corner place painted funky colors with their sign on the trim in a cartoony bubble font, over a vestibule and front windows plastered with performance posterbills done retro cool. Off to the left, a stained copper topped panel ‘L’ shaped bar, with a pressed tin pieced base & wood trimmings; seating for about a dozen on high back chairs. Barback is a fitted wood unit with crown molding corners inlayed fronting a wall of brick. In the center, a bust of I don’t know whom, as he’s wearing a Michael Myers mask (it being the season). Crosshatch horizontal wine storage angled to both sides, and shelving on the ends displaying canned & bottled selections to the left, and some wines & glassware to the right. Flatscreens mounted angled above, and small ones to both sides of a center skull (again, the season). The unit cobwebbed up over something brambleish with strung pink holiday lighting. Coolers below the bar pasted with brewery & other stickers. Mounted baby lampshade lamps over the barback, drop martini lamps tracing above the bar, and wavy paper over orange bulb faux fire lighting along the bar top.

The walls mostly painted beige, as is the ceiling with ducts tucked along the perimeter and brewery tins mounted to the rear. Tile lookin’ lino around the bar and dark wood slat floorings in the next room. A pair of hightops in the windows and a shorty roundy table forward the bar. The attached side room holds 3 tables sharing benchings on the rear wall, and 5 squares & recs out across the room. An outdated horizontal draft board listing beer, style & ABV in the corner, a display case with old seltzer & beer bottles, a few albums mounted (Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Animals), and some local art; this by the same woman who had her stuff up at Newburgh Brewing when last I was there. More lampshade lampings mounted to the ceiling and a pair of spinnys.

To the back of the bar, they’ve got brewery signage mounted and some great audiophile play; cool rock prints & ad pieces (A framed Stones ‘Beggar’s Banquet’ print, a framed Hendrix ‘Band of Gypsies’ ’70 poster, a Stone’s ’72 American tour print, a Little Feat print). Step into the rear room; the kitchen there and 3 booths adjacent on the inner wall of brick lined with dozens of old album covers; 5 rows of 15. I own a bunch of ‘em (Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, Hendrix, John Mayall, Joe Cocker, that first Buckingham-Nicks album, Yardbirds, Hot Tuna), and a whole lot of things just before my day, although I must say, that Guns N’ Roses album has no business being here. There’s also some more local art & paintings there. And through to a small rear rear room, event and/or band space with retro 60’s & 70’s blacklight posters, a projection screen, and slight seating. I don’t know what to say except this is some hippy’s bar.

An aged copper barbell tower of 8 on the bar, and a pair more newer stainless steel towers alongside. Capacity for 24 in all, nowhere near that occupied. Actually, only 15 beers currently up; ½ of them New York state offerings (Newburgh Menditto-Madura Harvest Ale, Rushing Duck Beanhead Coffee Porter & War Elephant IPA, Keegan Joe Mama’s Milk Stout, Captain Lawrence Katchkie Harvest Ale, Ithaca Flower Power, Southern Tier Backburner, Blue Point Oktoberfest), the other ½ a mix of craft (DogFishHead 60 Minute IPA & Positive Contact, House of Shandy Curious Traveler, Anderson Valley Hop Ottin’ IPA), imports (Newcastle Werewolf, Sapparo), and macro (Bud Light). I drank the Captain Lawrence Katchkie Harvest Ale, Rushing Duck War Elephant IPA, & Ithaca Flower Power. And 5 dozen bottles & cans, mostly meh imports & macros, some craft large and small bottle format, and a few micro sodas (Saranac, Tommyknockers). A tub of Modelo & PBR cans behind the bar for the ease of grab.

I was on the fence about the food thing. Starters, chili, salads, dogs, sandwiched, sides, a burger done 50 different ways, but the wings were most tempting. It just would have meant a 3rd beer, which Juanita easily sold me on. Nearly 3 dozens wing options to choose from, I went with the sesame garlic wings. They were wings.

Lots of friendly people drinking craft beer to yammer it up with here. We’re watching “Friday the 13th; the final chapter. I am convinced that it will not be the final anything. Some good beer here, I like the support of the area breweries. Interesting place, quite the mix of clientele.

This place had a funky atmosphere and an extensive food menu. The walls were decorated with vintage music posters and other beer related material. The tap selection was pretty decent and well-rounded. The Pulled Pork Nachos were pretty unreal and the Soul Burger (a burger topped with mac and cheese) was pretty epic. They had a ton of different burgers and sandwiches and other pub type food you would expect from a place like this. I didn't eat a single thing that night that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. The service could have been better but we spoke with the waitstaff while they were helping us and they explained they were a little understaffed that night. It happens. Overall I thought this place was great all around and will certainly be going back again soon...
