Poured from a buddy's growler into my pint glass early on New Years Eve. It was a little flat but I dont know how fresh it was so I'll leave it at that. Couldn't really pick up any hops in the nose but there was some nice toasted grain in there. Taste was very nutty, I liked that but it was very one note, nothing else going on. Mouthfeel was average. A pretty good effort, but its a crowded style and there are alot of more impressive competitors. That being said, he left me the growler to try it again. I'll fill it up and see if there's more to it next time...

Had right after the cask version. Good copper appearance, lots more clarity. Aroma was a little lacking for using simcoes, a little too reserved for my desires.
Beer was bitter, but didn't impart enough hop flava, just grapefruit like bitterness. Good, but not special. Easy enough to drink.

Enjoyed on tap at the brewpub. Very decent IPA, I think this is a bottling candidate. Three hops used,a good melange of bitterness, also served at a good temperature. Reddish tinge and a white head. A little piney, caramel is good though would personally like even moe bitterenss it is well balanced.

Trooper IPA (as per beer menu and accompanying coaster) on tap at the brewhouse. Copper in color with a short white foam head. Thin line of lace, not much retention. Smells of citrus hops. Taste was well balanced, and not as bitter as some other IPA hop bombs. Medium body and carbonation. Looked to be the local favorite. All in all, a pretty fine beer. Went very well with my chili, could stand up to the heat.

Thanks to FlacoAlto for sending this one my way!
Poured a medium amber color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of citrus, pine, and toasted caramel. Tastes of citrus, pine, and all around hoppy. Nicer bitter finish. A decent IPA that reminded me of a slightly tamer version of the IIPA I had right before it.

The IPA I had today was called "Trooper", and so I hope this is the right one. It's the only one they had on the menu. At any rate, it was a pale copper color with one finger of white foam. Smelled faintly of citrus and hops. Taste was not as hoppy as some IPAs, but there was a bit more malt and carmel which made up for it. All in all, a very nice combination of flavors. Moderate carbonation. I could have had several of these if my wife hadn't dragged me out of there...

Copper body, mostly white head. Pretty thin foaming, not much lacing although it seems to stick around a while.
Aroma and flavors are balanced, with citric hops and caramel malts making a fairly even appearance. The nose is a little weak, so I've docked it a bit.
The hops are herbal, grassy, with a touch of menthol. The malts are sweet, not quite full but at least sort of a hefty presence. Good balance of flavors and generally pretty flavorful.
Mouthfeel is about medium, good size for style - just not quite enough hops to kick this thing into overdrive.

This beer is a brilliantly clear copper color, but somehow there is a touch of dullness to it (hopefully this is caused by an excessive use of hops. The head is a pale off white color, it is a bit wispy and lingers for some time (perhaps a bit of hop influence). The aroma is herbal as well as a bit pine like, there are some raw hoppy notes, perhaps a hint grassy. Of course there is some citrus notes here, in fact they are quite evident, but overall the aroma is a bit more muted than I would like.
A fullish, creamy mouthfeel up front and some malt sweetness is in evidence in this beer as well. A striking minty, menthol note finishes this beer off at the end. Full malt serves as a foil for ample hop character and an herbal almost astringent bitterness from the get go. There is a tangerine citrus character, followed almost by a cheesy hop note (weird, and almost a bit off putting). Actually this beer is better balanced than the Pale Ale, bigger in the hop department certainly, but it has a magnified malt presence, which provides a balance to this brew that was not in the Stinger. If this beer were to get rid of the cheesy notes and were to pack in a bit more, or even a lot, more hops and this would be a great beer.

16 oz. served in a standard pint glass at the Pappadeaux in Phoenix on the way to Sedona. Poured a cloudy dark orange with a one-finger off-white head which settled to a coating. Nose is citrus, pine, floral and caramel. Taste is nicely balanced - grapefruit, pine and caramel with a nice hop bite and mildly bitter finish. Mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. I would have this again for sure if it were available locally.

On-tap at Taste of Tops in Tempe, AZ.
A: Golden-amber in color with a frothy, white head that settles quickly into some good lace and head retention.
S: Subtle hops with a sweet malt backbone.
T: Great, refreshing hop presence. Piney and earthy. Not too bitter or overpowering. Good, dry finish. Solid malt sweetness to balance it out. Great with spicy food as is usual for an IPA.
M: Really smooth, creamy, and easy to drink. Low carbonation.
O: A great IPA that I could drink every day. Nice work Sun Up!

Had this on tap today and several times over the years. $4.00 a pint at lunchtime.
Beer is a somewhat cloudy copper color and served with a smallish head that dissapated fairly quickly.
Nose was of fresh northwest hops - very nice.
Taste had a decent caramel malt base but the essence of the brew is the piney and citrus hops that finish with a vengence.
Mouthfeel was medium bodied, decently carbonated and refreshing.
Drinkability was good, the two pints i had went down quite nicely. Recommend to BA's to try if in the central Phoenix area. My hats off to Brewer Uwe!
