I stumbled upon Johncy's liquor one day after returning from Reds Ale House in North Liberty. All I was looking for was a pack of American Spirits, but found much more.

I was very impressed with the stock he has in his store. First, I noticed a good amount of single malt scotch. He has pretty much the standby's that you can find at any Hy-Vee in the Iowa City area, but are a few dollars cheaper. He has some different high end stuff, but nothing real great to speak of.

I moved over to the beer selection and there was an impressive two isles of room temperature beers, ranging from a good selection of Bells, to Goose Island, Unibroue, Boulevard, Rogue (actually a good selection of Rogue), and many others. I was surprised to see the Sam Adams Infinium on the shelf, as most places dont have this anymore. I almost bought it, but did not.

Typically I can find things that disappear from Hy-Vee and Dirty Johns at Johncy's long after. They still have Nightstalker on the shelf, so I've been widdling away at that. Among other things. Rogue Imperial IPA in the cooler (the one in the ceramic bottle).

Stop in and check it. Seems like a nice family run business. I like to support local business, so I stop in a buy something every time I cruise by.

Johncy's is an oasis of beer in North Liberty, Iowa, a town of just over 13,000 people. They carry a fine selection of American and imported beers, a sizable wine selection, liquor (excellent lineup of single malts), real root beer from real breweries, foods and snacks that go well with beer, glassware, etc. They frequently bring in new beers and alert their fans on Facebook so customers know what has just arrived.

Quality: I've yet to find an outdated or skunked beer at Johncy's. Occasionally there's something I want that didn't have a spot in the cooler, but most of the time it's already cold and ready for enjoyment.

Service: Friendly as only small town Iowa can be. Most of the time there are at least two folks staffing the store, sometimes three on busy days. Johncy and his folks are very knowledgeable about their products, and they're always willing to find out information about when beers are expected to arrive, or whether something they don't have can be made available.

Selection: Fantastic. Despite the small town location, Johncy's has upwards of 40 true Belgians, as well as many Belgian-style beers from Unibroue, Ommegang, Boulevard and Goose Island. Fine selection of imports from many countries. Closer to home: Bell's, Anchor, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium (including Lips of Faith), North Coast, Flying Dog, Rogue, Abita, Big Sky, Widmer, Buffalo Bill's, Left Hand, Thomas Creek, Brau Brothers, O'Fallons, Sprechers, Summit, Lucky Bucket, Lakefront and Schell. From Iowa: Millstream, Peace Tree, Hub City and Madhouse. Roughly half of the top 100 Beers of Fame can be found on their shelves.

Value: always good, frequent specials keep the bank from forcing you to buy cheap beer.

Johncy has teamed up with his distributors to offer regular tastings of beer and wine, now twice a month. A great way to sample a beer you weren't sure about, without having to spend your money first.

Overall, it's pretty impressive what Johncy has to offer. Stop by if you're in the neighborhood-- you'll be glad you did!
