I just stopped by the new Red Ear storefront in Covington to sample their wares and take a look around. This is only the second weekend they've been open and I was anxious to get a taste. Mike and Matt are real nice guys that showed me around their small but nice space and fielded all my beer geek questions. Without further ado, here goes the first pint of my growler...

A- Clear and a very deep shade of amber. No chill haze. One of the darkest APA's I've ever had. A nice looking head sticks around a couple of minutes then settles into a bubbly ring around the glass with pretty good lacing.

S- Upon first sniff I get citrusy hops but the scent doesn't linger long. Sweet malt becomes more dominant with hints of caramel and toffee.

T- Malty with low bitterness. A very malt-centric pale ale with hops mostly there to balance the sweetness. The hop flavor pokes through a little bit (it comes out more as the beer warms) and the malt isn't too complex; maybe this is more geared to craft beer newcomers.

M- Sticky, but not cloying. The sweetness clings to the tongue long after a drink. This beer's not necessarily begging for another drink, but it definitely won't keep you from coming back for more.

O- Overall not a bad flagship offering from a very new, very tiny Kentucky brewery. I could definitely see this going over well with the non-beer geek crowd. It's an easy quaffer that most people should be able to appreciate. I'd say it stands up to or surpasses the APA's from other Cincinnati-area breweries.

a: The beer has a nice half in head that settles quickly. dark yellow color with a tad bit of lacing.

s: very floral. This beer is strong on the flower petal smell with what seems to be rose, sunflower and in the background we get hints of malty sweetness.

t: Hoppy bitterness up front with tastes of flower petals. Finishes quickly with a taste of roasted malts. Very bitter in the foreground with a sweet finish. Pretty well balanced, though it could use some more flavors in there. I expected some citrus and never got hit with any.

m: nice feel, not too thick. Coats the mouth nicely with a good amount of carbonation.

o: not too shabby for a local start up. Nice flavoring and what seems to be a unique take with a strong emphasis on springtime floral.
