When the weather outside gets frightful, beer gets stronger, and while every brewery seems to have a winter seasonal, every brewery and their brother seems to have a Christmas beer. Meanwhile, everyone’s favorite, debaucherous follow-up to Christmas is left out in the craft beer cold, so to speak. So what better way to honor that reset button of holidays, and buck the Christmas beer trend, than to brew a beer for New Year’s Eve? Ours is a massive doppelbock, loaded with malt sweetness and deep dark fruit notes, and sporting a hot 10% ABV.

Not bad, its nice for what it is, but overly sweet and just a bit too strong to work as well as a smaller version could. It is not as clean as something like this ideally should be and instead of the rich malt leading, you get notes of over stressed yeast showing through where the excessive alcohol causes the beer to start to come apart at the seams.

Having recently gone on a Doppelbock kick, I couldn't dare pass up a local rendition from a respected craft brewer such as Holy City. I snapped this up with the quickness at Homegrown Brewhouse in Summerville, SC. The bartender, proud that a I selected his featured beer, filled the 12 oz snifter with gusto, producing an enormous 4-finger cappuccino-colored head. The foam rested atop a deep roasted-brown brew with little to no transparency. An earthy peat-like aroma with black coffee accents greeted the nose. Hints of sweet chocolate malts and just a little smoke peeked through. The flavor? MALT BOMB. An explosion of sweet, rich malt flavor. Akin to a massive Scotch Ale in both flavor and feel. There's some nice assertive tart bitterness in the finish that restores a little balance. The aftertaste gives suggestions of espresso-soaked wafers. The mouthfeel is chewy, rich and velvety smooth. It coats the palate like a viscous syrup, and the sweetness and smoke cling to your teeth. There's a pronounced booziness on the breath after just a few sips, along with a little heat in the chest. A little sticky on the lips as well. This is a well-crafted quality brew, but it it's just a little too bold, boozy and packed with cloying sweetness to be a traditional Doppelbock. It's lacking the nuance, character and drinkability of the classic Bavarian pioneers. But isn't that just like America? Take something great and try to make it bigger, better, bolder. Sometimes I think the most impressive beers are the ones that know when to dial it back, so it hits just the right notes at just the right frequency. That said, it's well worth the experience, especially if you like sweet, syrupy suds. I would really love to see what some barrel-aging would do to this one. It seems like a prime candidate for such a venture. Holy City?

Pours a nice deep murky brown has a small bar pour tan head that leaves some spotty lace but probably not as much as my home pour would.
Aroma is nice big chewy malts, dried dark fruit hints of chocolate and deep earthy peat underneath.
Taste is big chewy malt could make a meal of this one. Lots of fresh earth peat notes dark fruits peeking out along with some light licorice notes in the finish perhaps. Not sure if the earthiness is suppose to be there been while since I have had a Doppelbock but I am really enjoying this brew sitting in Charleston.
Mouthfeel is wonderful big and chewy malt goodness all around topped of with nice mellow carbonation making even smoother.
Overall man this is good beer enough said.

A: Had this beer on-tap at Gene's Haufbrau. Had a dark brown color and a cloudy consistency. There was a half inch of foamy , fairly long-lasting head. Average lacing.
S: A very malty aroma, with some dark fruit and a nutty quality as well.
T: Tasted of malt, the aforementioned nutty quality, raisins, and a hint of chocolate. Not a typical doppelbock flavor, but a solid flavor. Fairly boozy for the style.
M: An average amount of carbonation with a dry finish. Medium-bodied.
O: This is an interesting, generally well done beer. Pretty flavorful and drinkable.
