If you’ve ever seen a professional, male brewer, odds are you’ve seen a beard. There is some magical, unspoken connection between folks that make beer for a living and folks that dig on facial hair. We could dig a little deeper on that but we’re busy making beer…and mostly having beards.
Hooking up with the Holy City Beard & Moustache Society is therefore a natural fit for us. Chucktown Follicle Brown was named by said society, and was made to commemorate their hosting of the 4th Annual Southeastern Beard & Moustache Championships.
This hairy* beast is a 6.8% ABV brown ale with a heavy dose of Nugget & Amarillo hops. A smooth mouthfeel is followed by a bitter bite, both riding under a citrus aroma that is sure to smell great through your lip hair.
*NO hair was used, or abused, in the making of this beer.

No can date
Pours a very large 3 finger frothy rich tan head with great retention, soapy lacing, dark semi clear mahogany brown color
Nose toasted semi sweet caramel biscuity nutty brown malt, touch of chocolate and coffee, sweet bread crust, mild earthy hop
Taste has some brown malt a bit less than the nose, semi rich biscuity brown malt, hint of toffee but no caramel, roast and coffee, med bitter spicy hop, dry finish with big spicy hop bitterness, touch of acrid roast
Mouth med bod, touch creamy, med frothy carb
Overall not bad, nose was nice, taste was a bit more like a porter or stout than brown

A: The beer is very dark brown in color (black when viewed from afar). It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that left a patch of bubbles in the center, a narrow collar around the edge, lacing on the surface in between, and some streaks of bubbles running down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of nutty malts and herbal hops.
T: The taste has lots of flavors of nutty malts with bits of herbal hops and a light amount of associated bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and slightly smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This brown ale has a nice amount of nutty malt flavors in the taste.
Serving type: can

this is a well made brown ale, sturdy and super nutty as they go, more flavorful than many, but it didnt hit me like their porter did, as unique and rather complex for the style, and radiating quality. this is a step below that in all categories, and coming in from a hot day, this probably wasnt the right beer to start with, as it has a lot of body and some sweetness too, and drank a little heavier than i probably needed at the moment. that said, it has a nice chocolate malt complexion, plenty of earthy toasted depth, and some yeast character here as well. i get roasted almond, dry cocoa powder, bran muffin, and just a little molasses sort of sweetness in the middle. there arent much hops here, but this isnt english to me either, its bolder than that. a long flavor arc, it keeps on going, really stretched out, nice in the style. i had this with some spicy bbq shrimp and then some creamy shrimp and grits, and this worked fabulously in both contexts, a great food beer for sure, but i still think i like their porter better on their dark side though...

This is an under-rated beer! I am not really a brown ale guy. This beer is surprisingly tatsty, and has a rich flavor that surpasses most browns I have ever had. Look is solid, hazy brown - makes it look like a beer with substance. The smell is pretty light. Does not actually give you enough anticipation of the taste- hints of hops and malt -wanted more! Taste is wonderful. Solid, roasted malt taste- very full , with a solid, lasting bitterness that is rare in a brown ale. Mouth feel is exactly what i'd expect from a good brown - not too light, and not too heavy! Overall, I would buy this brown again and again. Wish it were available in my neck of the woods- if it's on your shelves you won't be disappointed.

I tried this down in Hilton Head at the house my bestie rented. It poured a deep amber with slightly off-white head that left a spotty lace. The scent had bitter hop. The taste was bitter leaning and closer to sour dough. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with decent carbonation. Overall it was ok...not sure I'd go out of my way for it.

12oz can poured into a snifter glass:
Look: Pours a dark brown with about an inch of head! Lacing is present with ok retention!
Smell: Plenty of roasted malts, caramel, and even some hops popping thru!
Taste: Taste follows the nose for me! This has a bit more hop bite than most of the other browns I have had!
Feel: Medium bodied.
Overall: Decent brown ale but nothing outstanding that would make me want to grab this again! Glad I picked up a bottle while here in Hilton Head to give this a try!

From a can in Charleston, SC. Pours as a hazy brown with a one-finger tan head. Aroma of caramel and hops. Taste is a nice balance of sweet malts and a tangy hops. Some nondescript citrus tastes. Body is a bit watery; not horribly so just not great.

Pretty good Brown Ale. Pours a dark mahogany color from a 12 oz can into a pint glass. Lots of ruby highlights coming through on the glass. Medium size tan frothy tan head with good retention and frothy bands of lacing on the glass. Aroma is roasted malt and some fragrant hops. Taste is more of the same, a mostly malty beer with some nice aromatic/floral hops in the finish. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, goes down real easy even at 6.8% abv. The hops presences makes this anything but a "boring Brown Ale". Well worth a try.
