Served in a Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

I must have missed the marketing fiasco (or coup?) that was New Lager... This one pours a clear pale copper straw topped by a whisp of quickly-dying bubbles. The nose comprises puffed rice, light wheat, some mild florals, and that strange semi-funk that lingers in the back, mocking my inability to accurately describe it. The taste follows in lock-step, though that asshole funk blends and morphs into a fairly clean, though somewhat tinny, bitterness. I will, say, though, it tastes better than most AALs. The body is light, with a light carbonation and a crisp finish. Overall, one of the better AALs I've yet had, but this isn't really saying all that much. It's a decent refresher, but by no means anything special.

Its crystal clear golden body is capped by a short head of frothy bright white foam that drops readily to just a razor-thin surface covering. Still, it somehow manages to leave creamy rings of sticky lace about the glass - amazing! The nose is clean with just a hint of grainy malt and some very light floral hops. The body is light/medium; and a very fine, moderate carbonation lends it just enough crispness on the tongue to awaken the taste buds while still leaving it silky smooth. The flavor seemlessly blends a clean, delicately grainy malt with some sharp, fruity and floral hops against a firm backdrop of bitterness. It finishes clean, crisp, short and dry. Why, this beer is almost too perfectly put together! A great summer quencher!

First had: on tap at B&G

Looked fine for a lager, mostly clear, golden color, with a small white head that receded to a wispy layer; not much in the way of lacing. Aroma of corn sugar, toasted grains, light herbal hops. Pretty much the same in the taste, corn, pale malts, light herbal hops, mineral notes. Light body, moderate carbonation. Easily drinkable, enjoyable for what it is.

From 22oz bomber to Hess imperial pint glass on 1/9/12
*From notes

A: Pale vanilla yellow. Clean as a whistle too. A generous pour yields a loose and white 1.75 finger head. The lacing may be unremarkable, but considering this is simply a pale lager, I'm quite happy with it.

S: A bit stodgy. Cornbread, white rice and a solid dose of bittering hops fill my nose.

T: Creamy malt, with plenty of bitter hops to balance the flavor profile. It's extremely refreshing and insanely easy to put back.

M: Out of bounds. The feel here is almost sinful. Creamy, rich and complex. Yet as I'd mentioned, it doesn't keep the beer from being anything if not quaffable.

O: I really, really dug Blue & Gray's take on a Classic Lager. Easily one of my favorites in-style. It's inoffensive, yet packs plenty of flavor. It'll also pair well with just about anything in your fridge or pantry. This is a killer gateway beer for your soon-to-be craft beer loving friends. Highly recommended for you old school lager buffs like me.

a: the lager is an attractive rich golden color with a lightly retained bone-white head and light lacing, looks pretty good in my pilsner glass

s: a sweeter and maltier lager, with a very floral corn-nectar aroma dominant, very atypical but I really like it for that reason, moderate (local) hop aromas are soft and herbal yet crisp, a little mineral, nice

m: carbonation and body both fall in the light-medium range, could be a bit more lively but I'm digging the smoothness

t: much like the aroma in its maltiness, and though the sweetness doesn't work as well here it's still quite interesting, pale barley and corn honey over a soft herbal hop flavor and mild bitterness, a little too heavy and long in the finish, but a nice flavor overall

d: pretty easy overall, but missing that snap that could make it a session

Draught @ Capital Ale House: This one pours a clear golden color. There was a small white head on it that did not linger nor leave any lacing. Mild but decent nose. Some malts, touch sweet, corn, maybe some floral hops. The taste isn’t bad. Better than most beers of this ilk. Clean, crisp taste. Easy to drink.

I had this on-tap at Lee-s Retreat.

Served in a pint glass.

A: Poured a glistening gold color, with a slight chill haze, and about a 1/2 finger head.

S: Like most B & G brews, not much on the nose. I got maybe a bit of yeast, a slight bit of hop, and lots of coldness.

T: Very crisp and refreshing, with just the right amount of bitterness and the sweetness was well-tempered for sure.

M: The drinkability was definitely high here with a really nice, fluffy carbonation bill.

O: This is one of the brewery's better offerings. I'd have this one again in a heartbeat.

22oz bomber into nonic.

Crystal clear rich golden amber hue with a thick one and a half finger head that slowly settles to just about nothing.

A little bit of bready grain, with a little bit of a syrupy fruit-like aroma. The hops add a bit of a tea like aroma.

Crisp and slightly toasty. The hops add a bit of a bitterness, very herbal as well. Not quite as smooth as I would have preferred. It almost has a Euro Lager quality to it. Lighter bodied, with a good amount of carbonation.

An okay lager, certainly good for a warmer day. Not quite as smooth or refreshing as some of the others I have tried. Still, a good job with a delicate style.

Very clear copper body topped by a white head, carbonation is moderate, decent retention and ok lace.
Subdued grass, hay, hops and floral scents makes up the nose of this lager. Very faint licorice present.
Taste is citric and floral, grassy undertones carries over into the aftertaste and a horehound candy flavor appears, aftertaste lingers well though very faint.
Full body for a lager and lots of coating which isn't necessarily what you want in a lager.
Very drinkable and easy to enjoy, not one of the best offerings from Blue & gray though.

appearance - Cloudy straw color, not much head or lace going on here.

smell - Nice smell of sweetness and hops.

taste - Sweet like honey and has a alcohol taste too.

mouthfeel - Medium body, nice carbonation balance.

drinkability - Nice fresh lager from B&G, great beers. I have one more to enjoy in the fridge.

A: Pours a crisp clean golden straw color with a nice cap of foam just resting there for a bit.

S: Clean with a light grainy and fruity aroma.

T: Taste is really nice, smooth with a couple of things going on . One is a sweet taste like a Saison or farmhouse ale... most likely from the yeast strain, next is the fruity but earthy taste. Very little hops inhabit this beer.

M: Thick and rich, smooth with a slightly chewy feel very unexpected for a lager to me.

O: As all the beer from Blue and Gray this was no exception, always great to have and goes with almost anything and yet very good by itself after a hard day at work.

Thanks to Jeff and Laurie Fitzpatrick !Hope all the success to your newest addition of brewpub my food was awesome.

Pours somewhat cloudy (I know they filter it, perhaps it is a chill haze) for the style...which is incorrect here...this is NOT an adjunct lager...this is all malt. Smell is butterscotch and bready with a tad of floral hops. Taste is malty with carbonation tickling the tongue and again, just a hint of hoppiness, but not much. The buttery nose overpowers the taste. Mouthfeel is medium and this is a highly drinkable brew. The wife liked it during a blind taste. Had it with barbecue chicken and it worked rather well. ABV is 4%.

Sampled from a 22 oz bomber into a pint glass at 50 degrees. Picked this up at the brewery during a Columbus-day-weekend excursion to Williamsburg.

A - Pours a cloudy yellow with minimal head and lacing.

S - Aroma is of honey and tea leaves...a little sweetness is detected. There is a discernable spice I can't quite put my finger on..

T - Honey dominates the taste - but there isn't really a malty accompaniment. The tea leaves come through as well, so it's a very good blend...if it weren't coupled with a bubbly alcohol flavor, though, it would be dangerously close to a tea, but I'm basing my taste rating on the fact that the alcohol is noticable.

M - Medium body with a good amount of carbonation...very slightly sweet on the aftertaste, otherwise a good, crisp finish.

D - I think drinking this from a bomber helps, because the more I drank (as it neared room temperature), the more enjoyable it was. At first, I was worried it would be too sweet, but that quickly melted away. All in all, a good lager from the boys at Blue and Gray.

This beer pours a dull yellow color with a little haze. Smell must be teased out, but its very malty and one-dimensional, like sweet grains. The taste also must be teased out as well, as there is little to distinguish this from any of the other lagers out there. There is the same sweet wheat taste, but very little else. The mouthfeel is weak, but because there is no real substance to this beer the drinkability gets a good rating. It also falls into the trap that befalls most microbrews, in that there is very little carbonation and it leaves this beer more akin to a syrup beverage than a beer.

Had on tap at the brewery.

A: Pours a hazy amber with little head.

S: Very light malt and some belgian yeast here.

T: Banana and some light malt. Nice smooth hop bitterness at the finish.

M: Light body but needs more carbonation.

O: Decent beer.

I tried this one on draft at the brewpub, Lee's Retreat, yesterday, and I liked it so much, I picked up a few bombers. I got three Lager bombers and a Stout for $15 out the door (cheap!). Poured into a DFH snifter (couldn't find my pilsner glass).

Appearance (3.5): A mostly clear dark yellow or light gold with just a touch of haze. A finger or so of white head which reduces to a ring and a small patch.

Smell (4.5): Not super fragrant but much better than what I would expect. Mostly light fruit and citrus with notes of mango, orange, and a subtle lemon. There's a light graininess with maybe just a touch of toasty, breadiness in there too. Pretty subtle overall, but still interesting and somewhat complex for the style.

Taste (4.0): A wet fruitiness hits first with the same orange-y notes as in the nose. Pretty mellow and clean through the middle and a slight grassiness in the finish. This is the perfect amount as opposed to the Russian River version I had a couple days ago which was overwhelming (yuk). There is a faint grainy malt flavor throughout, but particularly in the finish.

Mouthfeel (4.5): Wet and slick. Crisp but not not that dry with some sweetness in the finish. Light to medium bodied and medium to high carbonation. Perfect for the style.

Overall (4.5): This is a very easy drinking beer with some great fruit flavors. I was really surprised that this was one of my favorites at the brewpub as I didn't expect much. I wish all adjunct lagers tasted like this; I will be seeking this one out en masse in the future.
