For whatever reason, this is my favorite product from the Blue and Gray. I get a lot of raspberry on the nose and on the tongue. Stout is evident on the tongue as well. It is strong enough that I like to mix it with Guinness to extend it a bit. Recommended!

About a finger of dusky brown head and an essentially opaque brown body.

Raspberry is immediately apparent in the nose, but has an undercurrent of some kinda stanky chocolate malt. The raspberry is good-- the chocolate less so.

The taste contains the very dry chocolate, raspberry comes in on the aftertaste. These end up being subtle, which is to say that they are undercut severely by the taste of soda water. It's not super-carbonated, but it tastes like it.

Mouthfeel is standard if a bit coarse and force-carb feeling.

I was initially excited by the raspberry smell opening the bottle, but it ended up being much drier than I anticipated. I expect this is due to the lower original gravity and all the sugar in the constituent ingredients was metabolized by the yeast. Making this a milk stout would probably help.

Poured from the bottle into a goblet.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy dark brown with some light coming through at the edges. There is a half finger of tan head that leaves a thin layer around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Really dominated by raspberries. Some chocolate and roast, but that is overpowered.

Taste: The first taste was good, and then it went down hill from there. The bitterness in the finish is not refined at all and just grows. Overshadows the other flavors. Oh well.

Mouthfeel: The body is a bit thin with sharp carbonation and a slightly dry finish.

Overall: Too bitter. Not a huge fan, wouldn't have another.

Thanks Bobby...

A: Almost black in color with a very tall off-white head.

S: Smells like a Dogfish Head beer. Also smells like pure raspberry pie filling/syrup. A little bit of rubber and ethanol. Not a very pleasant aroma.

T: Big raspberry seed flavor. Some sugary fruit flavor with a decent amount of roasted malt. I don't get very much, if any, chocolate. There's also a light tartness.

M: Light bodied with a medium to high carbonation.

O: Tough to choke down a few ounces of this.

From bomber to Bruges hybrid glass on 2/20/11
*From notes

A: Black as night. Two finger head on a standard pour. Sticky and desirable lacing.

S: Wow! Rich chocolate covered raspberries on the nose with a slight amount of malt. Without question, this is the highlight of the beer.

T: Dark unsweetened chocolate first, then raspberry jam overloads the palate. I should point out it comes off quite authentic. I do not detect any hints of processed conditioners, etc. As it progresses, I notice traces of dark pumpernickel. I don't pick up the alcohol in this one, though there is a faint amount of subdued hops at the tail end.

M: Not overly viscous. Heavier carbonation then I would have liked, but for the English Stout style, I can't say it's unexpected.

O: A prime example of a dessert beer. It's extremely rich; a sipper that took quite some time to finish.

Blue & Gray continues to impress me. Their Chocolate Raspberry Stout is something different, and quite tasty.

I split this one with my wife today. It has some nifty "Valentine's Day" bottle art that appealed to her sensibilities. Heck, I'm just happy she's actually drinking a beer with me.

A: Dark chocolate color, with about a finger or so peppery, mocha-colored head that never subsided into anything short of a shaving cream-like froth.

S: I didn't get a whole lot of chocolate, but I got a TON of raspberry on the nose. If this is your wheelhouse, then this brew won't disappoint...

T: Blue and Gray's typical, VERY yeasty taste profile (which isn't entirely unpleasant). Raspberries were here for sure, but not nearly as potent as it was on the nose. This had a very bready and doughy aftertaste.

M: I think this one would have benefited greatly from a lower carbonation level and higher ABV. There was a minimal amount of lacing left on the glass.

D: This is not one I'd have every day, but since my wife dug it, that definitely counts for something...

From 02/06/11 notes. Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into my Duvel tulip.

a - Pours a dark brown, almost black color, with one inch of tan head and light carbonation evident. No real retention or lacing.

s - Smells of raspberries, sweet dark fruits, chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts.

t - Tastes of watered down coffee, raspberries, roasted malts, and chocolate. A step down from the the nose.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation.

d - An ok stout, but nothing special. I thought the taste was a bit watered down. Worth trying but wouldn't seek out again.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into my Stone RIS glass. Poured dark brown and pretty close to black in color with a moderate tan colored bubbly head covering the top of the beer. The head faded only to cling to the edges of the glass, where it left some nice lacing.

The aroma is strong with raspberry flavors. It actually smells pretty close to actual raspberry flavor, although I have to assume it's an extract flavoring. Pretty good raspberry aroma though. It has some hints of chocolate coming through in the nose as well but still mostly raspberry. It could have been a little more balanced between the raspberry and the roastiness of a stout though in my opinion.

The taste follows the nose in that it is raspberry dominated. The raspberry flavor is pretty decent, it tastes a little extracty to me but it's a pretty high quality extract if it is. I'd be very surprised if it's actual pureed raspberries though. There is a chocolate roasty flavor to it as well that goes nicely with the raspberry flavor. I would have preferred a little more chocolate and roasty flavors to it though and a little less raspberry to balance them out a bit.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and carbonation is slightly below average. Drinkability is pretty decent, it's not a big roasty stout for sure but it's a pretty decent raspberry flavored beer. It's a nice seasonal for valentines day though and fits the season well.

22 oz bottle, February 2010 on the label, poured into a nonic.

Very dark brown color, milk chocolate like in appearance with a thin tan head with a surprising amount of lacing. Berries and chocolate malt on the nose. Taste is sadly lacking any of the berry from the nose, instead a strong roasted malt body and cocoa powder-like sweetness resulting in a milk chocolate like syrupy body. Not awful, but not great. Reminds me of the Legend Chocolate Porter I just had, not quite as bad as that, but still a let down.

Served in a Mickey Finn's shaker pint glass.

The pour reveals a dark, nearly opaque brown with a whispy tan foam for a head. For a stout, it looks a little thin, especially when viewed from above. There's some lacing, but it's thin and transitory. The raspberries come out in the smell, along with a train of dark, chocolatey malts. The taste, though, takes the raspberries mostly out of the equation, leading instead with the malts, which give a choco-dust flavor, a twinge of bitterness, and, near the back, there comes a hint of those very berries from the smell. Though it definitely defies its own appearance by sitting just a tad heavy on the tongue, it's not too heavy to keep the drinkability down. Overall, a decent beer, but nothin' too special.

Thanks to davidt for the trade...
Appears a dark brown with a red hue, dark tan head and scattered lacing left around the glass.
Smell is of a soapy, waxy raspberries, cocoa...a mild vegetation aroma resonating.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with a bit more of a chocolate and raspberry flavor, along with roast nuts, and tart cassis.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, sweet, with artificial fruit, and bit like a raspberry sherbert.
