From a 375 ml bottle (Summer 2013, Batch 4) into a tulip.

A-A normal pour produces less than a finger of white foam. The retention is poor and leaves only a stray finger of lacing. The beer is murky and light, golden-orange in color. Carbonation is pretty mellow.

S-The aroma is funky with earthy barnyard/horse blanket scents mixing with tart orange. The scent is on the dryer side of things with a bit of oak and vanilla in there background. There is also a little bit of white vinegar in there. Bourbon is barely there.

T-The taste starts out much like the smell with nice funk, tart orange, vinegar, and dry oak. The finish is a bit rougher and the acidic orange flavors sort-of evolve. I get a little bit of vanilla and bourbon, which gives the brew a bit of an orange creamsicle taste, but then the orange fades leaving a dry oak and a hint of bourbon on the palate.

M-The feel is pretty light in the body with a creamy carbonation in this older bottle. An early bottle that I had right after the release had more pop and carbonation, but I like the mellow fizz better.

O-This is a pretty damn good beer. It is not just a one-note tart, acid bomb like you might expect from a sour beer flavored with oranges. Instead, the on-the-palate evolution from funk to tart orange to dry oak with a hint of bourbon makes for a pleasurable and intriguing drinking experience. The beer doesn't hit you over the head with flavors, but I suspect it would hold up well against some lighter food.

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Minimal haze to a yellow body. Small white head. A bit of surface wisping. Thin collar.

Smell - Bright orange. Oak. Sourdough bread. Bourbon. Very nice.

Taste - Citrus and wheaty grain. Bourbon more prominent. Citrus overpowers it after a while, though.

Mouthfeel - Medium light body. Well carbonated. Bourbon adds some depth to it.

Overall - This is impressive. The bourbon barrel adds a fantastic dimension to it.

bottled summer of 2013.

375ml bottle with pressure cap.

poured into a Crooked Stave Tulip glass.

Appearance: translucent and glowing yellow orange bodied beer with 2 fingers of white head. Leaves some nice lacing on the side of the glass. Head drops down to a thin cap.

Smell: Oranges, wheat malts, and earthy bretty funk in this beer. The nose is fairly mellow overall, but the oranges really seem to pop out at you when this beer get close to room temp.

Taste: Orange zest, brett, and oak barrel are the prominent flavors. In the middle of the beer a little bit of bourbon and vanilla that melds nicely with the citrus and earthy flavors that have a stronger presence. Mild tartness in the form of green apples, white grapes, and meyer lemons(a sweeter, yet still tart variety of lemon). Also more brett funk that is mostly earthy and dusty. Hint of wheat malt and biscuity malt as well. In the finish, the beer has this sweet and tart citrus thing going on that is really nice! The bourbon starts to show more when the beer warms up. Its not overpowering and seems to compliment the citrus and brett flavors nicely. Mild tart oranges and very mellow bourbon seem to linger long after each sip. A unique beer for sure! Nice complexity, very well integrated and balanced saison.

Mouthfeel: light bodied beer with low end of moderate carbonation levels. Delicate slightly creamy and soft carbonation. The finish is crisp and semidry. I can't believe this beer is 7% it drinks like its 4% abv.

Overall: This really reminds me of the St bretta series beers by CS, but the brett is much more tame and balanced with all the other things going on in this beer. I think that this is the only bourbon barrel saison brewed with oranges that I have ever heard of and ever had the pleasure to try. I would say that it is on par with many Hill Farmstead saisons. Crooked Stave made a great beer here! I would say it is in my top 3 saison of all times that I have drank.
