375 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Minimal haze to a yellow body. Small white head. A bit of surface wisping. Thin collar.

Smell - Bright orange. Oak. Sourdough bread. Bourbon. Very nice.

Taste - Citrus and wheaty grain. Bourbon more prominent. Citrus overpowers it after a while, though.

Mouthfeel - Medium light body. Well carbonated. Bourbon adds some depth to it.

Overall - This is impressive. The bourbon barrel adds a fantastic dimension to it.

bottled summer/2013.

375ml bottle with pressure cap.

poured into a Crooked Stave Tulip glass.

Appearance: translucent and glowing yellow orange bodied beer with 2 fingers of white head. Leaves some nice lacing on the side of the glass. Head drops down to a thin cap.

Smell: Oranges, wheat malts, and earthy bretty funk in this beer. The nose is fairly mellow overall, but the oranges really seem to pop out at you when this beer get close to room temp.

Taste: Orange zest, brett, and oak barrel are the prominent flavors. In the middle of the beer a little bit of bourbon and vanilla that melds nicely with the citrus and earthy flavors that have a stronger presence. Mild tartness in the form of green apples, white grapes, and meyer lemons(a sweeter, yet still tart variety of lemon). Also more brett funk that is mostly earthy and dusty. Hint of wheat malt and biscuity malt as well. In the finish, the beer has this sweet and tart citrus thing going on that is really nice! The bourbon starts to show more when the beer warms up. Its not overpowering and seems to compliment the citrus and brett flavors nicely. Mild tart oranges and very mellow bourbon seem to linger long after each sip. A unique beer for sure! Nice complexity, very well integrated and balanced saison.

Mouthfeel: light bodied beer with low end of moderate carbonation levels. Delicate slightly creamy and soft carbonation. The finish is crisp and semidry. I can't believe this beer is 7% it drinks like its 4% abv.

Overall: This really reminds me of the St bretta series beers by CS, but the brett is much more tame and balanced with all the other things going on in this beer. I think that this is the only bourbon barrel saison brewed with oranges that I have ever heard of and ever had the pleasure to try. I would say that it is on par with many Hill Farmstead saisons. Crooked Stave made a great beer here! I would say it is in my top 3 saison of all times that I have drank.
