"A play on both the microflora that sits atop our barrels and the yeast lees, which rouses the distinctive characteristics. Flor d'Lees is a classic golden sour, reminiscent of the great spontaneous Belgian beers traditionally brewed throughout the Senne Valley." Brewed in the style of an American Wild Ale, aged in Oak Barrels, available in single 375 ml. bottles and on limited draft.
Poured from a 375ml. bottle to a tulip glass.
(Appearance) Pours a fizzy foam head of a pearl white complexion over a mildly hazy pale straw body with high clarity, ample carbonation and thin, sparse sediment. Retention is below average and lacing is light and spotty. 3.5
(Smell) Pretty serious tangy sour and funky aroma with undertones of pale and light grain malts. Soured fruit juices, some barnyard and white wine acidity. Smells fairly dry with a leading sourness and acidity. Potency is moderate. 4
(Taste) The flavor is a good bit more fruity than the aroma suggested, with a considerably clean finish. Tangy and modestly acidic flavor with a soft and vinous dry back end. I don't get much in the way of the oak barrel aging, but there's seemingly a lot contributed from the oak barrel to impact the dryness of this beer. 3.75
(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, silky, chalky dry. Carbonation is moderate, generating a medium frothiness and a moderately crisp finish. Body is shy of medium for the style, shy of medium overall. Balance is slightly tangy and funky dry over sweet. Alcohol presence is low and there are no off characters. 3.75
(Overall) A nice level of sourness, but not much otherwise, especially on the back end, which was puckering dry, chalky and thin. There is little flavor impact from the oak, but it contributes strongly to the dryness of this beer, which is already a bit much. One of my messier sours I've tried as of late, there's a bit that could be improved on to make this a lot more memorable. 3.75
