Thanks to BA ShitBirdKing247 for opening this alongside the cognac version. The brew pours a clear mahogany color with a tiny ring of bubbles around the edge that is the only thing reminescent of a head. Some ruby hints are seen through the body with orange on edges when held to the light.

The aroma is a strange yet inviting compilation of unexpected character: coffee and toasty almost caramel and toffee are the first suggestions before oak. Then the funky comes into play which is a strange after-smell that doesnt seem to be fitting.

The flavor is rather tangy and vinous with a mildly musty and oxidized sort of note before blending into vinegar. The barrel aged oaky quality really only becomes noticeable into the aftertaste.

This is a medium bodied brew with a low level of carbonation. It is strange but not that bad. There is something about high octane wild ales that just doesnt strike me the right way. Coupled that with the vinegar notes and well...i dont really have any interest in trying this again. I do appreciate the share though, thanks Josh.

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep reddish brown. I can count the number of bubbles on one hand. Dismally dead looking.

Smell - Tons of caramel, some fruits. Dark fruits with an acidity to the nose.

Taste - Sharp acidity covers up a lot of the quad. Still a fair amount of caramel. Sharp clean sourness. Fruity.

Mouthfeel - Low carbonation. Medium heavy body.

Overall - Not sold on this. The sourness doesn't add to it. Just makes me wonder if it was a quality base quad.

Bottle shared by pmoney. Served in a FFF teku.

A: Pours a hazy brown color with a thin head forming on the pour. It recedes to nothing quickly leaving behind no lace. Still looking.

S: Acidic cherry, slightly tart with a sweet malt presence and some caramel. Light notes of bourbon and oak with a little plum as well.

T: Tart and lightly acidic with some red apple and cherry notes. Oak barrle with a sweet cracker malt and caramel presence. Very little bourbon with a hint of vanilla.

M: Low carbonation with a medium high body. Slightly chewy texture.

O: This was a nice beer, but I wish it had a little more base Quad show up. A touch more carbonation would have been nice as well.

Thanks, Andrew.

Ruddy turbid brown body topped by a thin film. Funky, smoky nose. Very earthy, some mushroom notes, faint bourbon. Nice acidity on the palate, dark fruit, red currant. Full body with medium-low carbonation. Mild bourbon barrel tannins and vanilla notes pop out in the finish. A pretty nice soured quad with impressively well hidden alcohol.

375ml bottle from the taproom $11. Dark, dark red color with a thin ring of bubbles circling my wine glass. The first whiff off the bottle is great, bourbon, malt, hints of sour ale. As the beer opens up the alcohol really steps forward in the aroma but its still good, slight cinnamon and spice. Flavor is good with mild bourbon notes, decent alcohol, definite sourness, very solid fruit flavor like grapes possibly. My only complaint is that the body does seem a little watery and I'm usually generous on mouthfeel. This was an interesting beer overall but not worth the price of admission.

Been holding this for the last year. It poured with no head at all. It is very deep red/ brown in color. There is no carbonation at all, very flat. With the sourness and the heat from the bourbon barrels it reminds me of a boozy Flemish Red. I think they tried to do too much with what could have been a great beer. A wild quad or BBA quad would have been fine, but all 3 and it takes away from the product. Nice to try but don't need another.

thanks to ablackshear for this awesome extra!

poured into crooked stave tulip glass.

Appearance: murky bodied beer with light cola colored head. After a hard pour you get a thin cap of head composed of large translucent bubbles that drop quickly to no head at all.

Smell: The barrel notes with sour cherries and lemons smelled almost immediately. Smells of malty dark fruits, earthy, and hint of smoke. The beer has big tannic and vinous notes with a hint of lactic acidic note.

Taste: moderately sour lemons, green apples, and red grapes that add a vinous and slightly sharp tart flavor to the beer. Malts are full of dark fruits with raisins mpstly being the focal point and a surprise found as a hint of smoke. Yeah! The beer finishes with the barrel notes... You gotta love the barrel notes that are incorporated into this beer featuring deep tannins, sweet vanilla, and a mellow yet fortified earthy oak flavor that lingers during the finish. The sour notes and the sweet notes build up as the beer warms. Not much of a quad, but I still like this beer.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with very low carbonation. You can pretty much say its flat carbonation levels. The beer has no booze notes at all. It just a little warming towards the end of the bottle.

Overall: I enjoyed the way this beer tastes and the flavor profile does remind me of Oso's Wee on the Lam that I have tried just recently. Unfortunately, Crooked Staves beer is a little rough around the edges compared to Wee on the Lam. Its biggest fault is that its flat. I enjoyed the complexity of the flavor of this beer it was honestly my favorite part of the beer.
