2013 Vintage, batch 2
Poured into a Duvel Tulip

Appearance: (4)
Pours a hazy straw gold with a tightly bubbled, pure white 2 finger tall head. The head quickly dissipates, leaving no lacing behind.

Aroma: (4.25)
Wow, as soon as the beer is poured, you're blasted in the face by that signature Crooked Stave funk; Musty hay, dried apricots, sun worn leather, pineapple, damp earth, peach flesh and a fairly strong medicinal edge. This medicinal tone is almost band aid-y in nature. A slightly lemon juice perceived tartness gently cuts through the massive Brettanomyces forward nose. As the beer warms, vanilla undertones from the barrels poke through softly.

Taste: (4.25)
Much more sour than the nose; as soon as the beer touches your tongue, you're struck by a blast of clean, crisp lemon-like acidity. This juicy sourness takes center stage throughout the taste, picking up notes of tart pineapple, wet horse blankets and musty leather up until the off dry finish. Upon the finish, you're greeted by a slightly chewy, cracker-like malt backbone. Long, lingering notes of some medicinal brettanomyces characteristics, leather, musty hay, bitter lemon peel, pineapple and gentle vanilla.

Mouthfeel: (4)
medium, slightly chewy body, with firm, moderate to high carbonation.

Overall: (4)
Crooked Stave's golden sour. This beer features some absolutely outstanding Brettanomyces character in the aroma, reminding me of a slightly funkier version of Russian River's Sanctification. As complex as the aroma is, I found that the clean, but strong acidity overwhelmed some of the more subtle, nuanced flavor components of Crooked Stave's blend of Brettanomyces yeast. That said, this is an absolutely great example of a sour beer. Highly recommended. Im definitely looking forward to aging this beer.

12.7 oz bottle. Pours hazy golden orange with a small white head that goes to a thin film.

The aroma is straw malts, soft tropical fruit, earthy brett and some tart acidic notes.

The flavor is sweet tropical fruit quickly followed by a lot of tart, acidic sourness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Overall, this has aged nicely - nice blend of sweet tropical fruit, earthy brett and tart acidic sourness.

A - Golden with a light haze and a small white head

S - Tart lemon, light blue cheese funk, and tart vinegar that gives it a good balance of tart and funk 4.5

T - Green apple, lemon peel, white vinegar and light oak. Reminds me a bit of a sour apple juice. Light blue cheese funk near the backend that balances the tartness 4.25

M - Not much carbonation but has a tart bite from the vinegar and tartness. Finish has a light tingle near the end.

O - Tart and lightly funked sour that has a nice apple presence balanced with a slight blue cheese funk

on-tap @ falling rock

Heavy goblet pours - bright straw-orange body, lovely white lace. Lots of citrus, funky grassy goodness, lots of brett notes, vinous white wine, yellow peach, passion fruit. I had a few pours of this, really lovely beer from an impressive brewery.
