Nice hiss when opened, but pours little in the way of head. Pitch black liquid, but not viscous thick. Smells brettanomyces 'horseblanket', raw oak, acetic acid, vanilla, coconut. Cherry pits, mild chocolate.

Taste is mostly acetic acid. Drying, mild dark roast, notable oak - though I don't get much in the way of brandy. Dried out mealy meat of a cherry.

Medium-nice carbaonation works with the acidic. Light in thickness with drying astringency and a finishing summer pucker.

Bottle: Poured a light black color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and some light lacing. Aroma of tart notes with some funky yeast notes and light dry roasted malt. Taste is also dominated by tart notes with some acidity and dry roasted malt notes. Brandy notes are pretty tame and hard to distinguish. Body is light with medium carbonation. Not bad overall but I can’t say that sour porter is a style that I really seek.

Bottle from the Cellar Reserve. Served in Crooked Stave stemware. Pours near black with a nice tan head. Pretty good retention and a heavy amount of lace, especially for the style.

The nose carries really excellent notes of chocolate alongside dark fruits, cherry, oak, vanilla, and a bit of lactic acid. The chocolate takes over as it warms, migrating more from a dark-chocolate character to milk chocolate. There's a bit of creaminess to the flavor rather than the body thanks to the barrel aging. Nice notes of oak and vanilla through the finish. A slight bit of roast.

Body is medium with moderate carbonation, dead on for where this beer should be. Smooth finish with just a touch of acidity. A bit of funk on the back end. Not super heavy, however, and leaning toward cherry and earth.

One of my favorite Crooked Stave beers to date. I'm looking forward to trying the other two in the series.

Bottle opened on 4.8.13

A - Pours a motor oil black with a foamy dark tan head with great retention.

S - Funky, dark ripe fruit-cherry, plum, and brandy.

T - Tart cherry, brandy barrel warms the belly as I sip. Lots of barrel and funk.

D - Good carbonation and a medium body, tart.

O - Brett and brandy barrels really swirl and work here.

Huge thanks to JMBSH for sending me this.
375 ml bottle poured into a tulip

A- Black with a three finger tan head.

S- Chocolate, dark fruits, sour cherries, brandy, some funk.

T- Chocolate, some roasted coffee, brandy, big sour finish, cherries, some oak, some funk in the finish. Brandy barrel really stands out and works great with this beer. Big flavors, great complexity and pretty well balanced.

M- Light to medium body, high carbonation.

O- A nice sour porter. Brandy is really smooth and not hot. This is my second Crooked Stave beer and I really enjoy it, really wish I didn't have to trade for their stuff.
