375 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Brown and reddish. Nice off white head. Very wispy surface. Thick collar.

Smell - Bretty. A little acidic. Cherry aroma. Oak. Faint caramel malt.

Taste - Cherry is more.prominent. Tart turns to genuinely sour as it warms up. Bretty and earthy. More caramel malt. Maybe more toasty than caramel. Very dry and oaky in the back.

Mouthfeel - High carbonation and light. Very dry. Medium sourness.

Overall - Not what I expected. Improved as I drank more of it, as always seems to happen with Crooked Stave.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this beer

Consumed 3/26/14

Appearance: Deep, dark ruby with some brown highlights - small, light beige head, fades to some wisps of a cap, leaves a few specs of lacing

Smell: Sour and tart, with some ripe oak - acidic and lactic sour, with some yeasty funk - touch of damp cellar - amber malts at the base, kind of like a Flanders Red - some dark fruits - some vinegar and a ton of oak

Taste: Fruity tartness - nicely tart, with some dark berry-like fleshy tartness - some red wine tannins - lactic, damp tartness - grape and cherry skins - more tartness, with a light touch of vinegar - big, chewy oak - barrel in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body, smooth, with a tart, refreshing finish

Overall: Tart, sour, tasty

I'm not surprised that Crooked Stave made (another) great sour. I'm not really sure what category this falls into, but I guess the phrase "burgundy sour" makes sense. It's kind of like a Flanders Red, but also not. Definitely worth a try.

Big thanks to randum_ink for the bottle.

Appearance: Dirty brick reddish dark copper. Or burgundy. Head is light tan bubbly, thin with minimal retention. Loose bubbly colhay. . Minimal carbonation.

Smell: Dark cherry fruit leather. Worn and juicy with some tart cherry juice. A touch of blackberry and balsamic vinegar. Acetic with some lemon peel and a powdery citric acid push. Tart with a backing malt sweetness. A touch bready with some darker amber and caramel malts. Earthy with some straight damp funk. Some grass and hay. Fruity and tart like a leather wrapped shock tart.

Taste: Powdery citric bit up front. A touch of raw bready malt. Some caramelized malts add a mild sweetness and bready undertone. Sweet to balance everything else out. Powdery yeast adds some funk leaning earthy with some damp stone. Herbal with a floral edge. Tart. Cherry flesh and tannic skin coupled neigh a distinct blend of lactic and acetic acid. Some raspberry and a solid compliment of oak barrel. Oak and vague dark fruit. Dusted tart. Worn leather strips and cherry fruit leather. A lingering pale malt sweetness. Lemon zest, flesh and juice. Straight puckering tart.

Mouthfeel: Light leaning toward medium body. Minimal carbonation. Dryish on the finish with astringency throughout. A bit damp overall.

Overall: Born primordial.

You want a tart sour? Drink this. Do it.

T-Acidic, funky, lots of it. Oak and smoke as well. Green apples, grapes and cherries.

M-Medium bodied, nor much carbonation, tad watery but sour.

O-A solid sour, very funky. A very hit you in the face sour. Well made.
