The trend for 2013 has got to be Sour Saisons. There coming from all directions and seem to be hitting the market daily. The latest to infultrate Central Kentucky is Crooked Stave's Surette Provision Saison.

Drinking with the eyes, the musty tartness becomes evident right from the pour. Its hazy peach-golden hue looks strikingly like tart grapefruit or orange juice. But its racing carbonation builds a creamy ivory white foam cap the recedes to a sheet to skirt the glass and laces the glass with broken pockets of foam. Its appearance is straight out of the farmhouses of Belgium

The promise of tart fruitiness is delivered to the nose as aromas of musty dried fruits lead the way. Peaches, apricots, grapefruits, limes, lemons and oranges all take turns performing for the olfactory senses. But an aura of earth wafts about with the scent of wet hay, horse blanket, sea air, weathered attic wood and cork. Afterwards, a tinge of white pepper, cumin and parmesan keep the complexities and balances plentiful.

Sharp sourness pierces the taste buds with clean lime-like lactic sourness. Sour white grapes, orange peels, grapefruit, oaked chardonnay and a hint of cider vinegar take center stage on the palate. Those earthen wood, grass, and dusty tones swirl about mouth and gives a rich balance to the acidity. Peppery to finish, its the peppercorn, smoky cumin and a zesty hop bitterness that creates a snappy closure with a short aftertaste of earth and spice.

Light bodied, the champagne-like effervesence springs the acidity from the mouth and forces the beer to finish well before the taste is fully explored. Its as if the complexity and balance are better appreciated in that short aftertaste than on the palate directly. Light warmth, wood spice and light astringency gives the beer a clean powdery lasting texture.

Its another stellar wood aged and intentionally soured ale by Crooked Stave. These guys are spot on! I would love to sit down with a couple of these ales and a pot of mussels. Talkin' about dying happy!

A: A deep golden beer with a touch of a copper hue and light haze. The head is off white and fades after a couple of minutes.

S: A strong tart aroma with peppery and fruit notes. Orange and lemon fruit notes

T: A medium-strong tartness to the beer with little malt and a medium hops bitterness making for a moderately bitter balance. The finish is dry with a light aftertaste of hops bitterness and oak. There is a light rustic grain flavor in there like a little bit of rye in the background.

M: A light bodied beer with a strong level of carbonation.

O: An exceptionally well crafted Saison with a fair amount of the Brett and barrel sourness to it. There is a light oak character to the nose and flavor and very dry making for a very food friendly beer.

Chilled bottle poured into tulip.

Poured golden orange in color with a light head that dissipates quickly. The smell is divine with a distinct tart fruit aroma (apple and lemon). Good carbonation and the beer overwhelms your mouth with each sip. The taste is tart, and you get some barrel. The beer finishes dry with a citrus tang.

Caught my attention while in a Whole Foods that just opened up down the street, decided to try it out. Poured from a bottle into a New Belgium globe.

Appearance: grapefruit in color with thin quarter-inch lacing. Very appetizing, though not extraordinarily different than any other Saison.

Smell: citrus, floral, tart, nose candy.

Taste: it's the tart, grapefruit and citrus flavors that run the show here. Remember sweet tarts? This is sweet tart-infused beer. This beer will make you pucker.

Moutfeel: light, thin, wavy.

Bottle sampled courtesy of a trade with Mitch from Colo.

Pours heavily hazed apricot, eggshell head, slight in size, leaving a fine bubble film, collar and a few minor tongues of stick.

Faint fruity nose, with a hint of a lactic bite.

Tasty saison, fruity, lightly spiced, again with a mild lactic bite/note. Flavorful and complex. Quality take on the style.

Very impressed with all the CS beers I've been tasting. Need to trade for more or wait for them to be distributed to NY state...

Moderately dark brown in color and is mostly hazy. Just a trace of white foam on the top. I get white Chardonnay and oak in the nose. The body is fairly light and the tartness prickles the tongue. The taste is a lightly tart white Chardonnay and oak. This is very crisp and refreshing and with plenty of flavor.
