Elated that Crooked Stave has begun distributing in NY. This was the first of theirs I tried. Bottle into a pint glass.
A - Fine straw gold, cloudy and full. Fizzy full head that subsides with some lacing.
S - Saison notes of pepper, wheat bread, and grass mix with the sour lemon, apple and general horsey funk. Much less abrasive than a gueuze. Close your eyes and you’re picking macintoshes on a dewy summer morning.
T - First sip explodes with the tart fruitiness, which subsides into a mix of spicy bread and earth notes and a subtle hop bitterness that somehow hung on through the oak-barrel aging.
M - Impressive how this marries the mealy, sticky mouthfeel of a saison with the effervescence of a traditional sour.
O - This is really a wonderful hybrid that finds the best of the sour and the best of the saison. Less astringent than a traditional gueuze, funkier than a simple farmhouse beer. Great especially for someone new to sour beer.

Pours a clear, gold color. 1/3 inch head of a white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of tartness, slight apple, slight pale malt, hint of sweet malt, hint of hop, and a hint of alcohol. Fits the style of a Saison / Farmhouse Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. There is also a strong tartness. Tastes of pale malt, slight sweet malt, hint of hop, slight citrus, and sourness. Overall, good appearance, aroma, feel, and body.
