Surette poured into a CS Tulip

A - Hazy, golden yellow with a slightly reflective body. Small white head sits on top

S - Lemongrass, light sweet tarts, lemon peel, and oak. As you smell this one, the tartness intensifies as you breathe it in

T - Lemon, lemon zest up front. As the beers continues there is a slight sweetarts and vinegar presence that gives the beer a refreshing tartness. There is also a slight creamy blue cheese and funk presence that makes it a really nice and refreshing saison.

M - Light, refreshing and dry. Has carbonation that adds some nice zip to the beer. This makes it a nice and refreshing saison.

O - This is another one of the well balanced and flavorful saison that makes CS such a great brewery. There is complexity here as it has both nice funk and tartness that balances very well.

Big thanks to angrybabboon for my first chance to try Crooked Stave.

Appearance: Slightly hazed peach-tinged gold. Head is white and drops to a wispy cap and small creamy collar. Moderate carbonation on the pour. Nice and bright.

Smell: Oak. Nice and woody right up front. A push of acetic tartness. Some lemon zest and fruity esters. A touch of apple skin and peach. A touch of funk with a powdery yeast presence. Nice hints of damp earth muddled with some leather. A little bit lactic with a nice Brett push throughout. Slightly sweet malt base adds a touch of caramelized malt and a vague bready quality.

Taste: Powdery Brett lingers in the back of a slightly more aggressive lactic tart push. A bit softer on the sour edges than expected from the nose. A touch spicy with a dry oaky finish. A ton of oak. Earthy and damp with some hay and grass. A touch of lemon as well. A touch of herbal hopping with a mild bitterness. Nice clean, slightly sweet malts help round it out, adding a bit of depth. Warming pushes it to tart funky oak. Some spicy esters, hinting at something more Belgian than buggy. A touch of lingering bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a surprising slick, almost juicy, mouthfeel. Moderate carbonation. Almost clean finish.

Overall: Sure.

An enjoyable first endeavor. Easy drinking pseudosoursaison. Barrel influence runs a tad heavy, but it's good and worth drinking again. *hint*

Thanks Sammy!

Appearance. Pours an orange-gold colour with a thick finger of slightly off-white head.

Smell. Funky and sweet oak, a touch of citrus and fruity yeast, and maybe even a little honey.

Taste. Nice sourness, limes and other citrus, funky toasted oak.

Mouthfeel. On the lighter side of medium bodied, medium fine carbonation.

Overall. Crisp and refreshing but with enough body, flavour, and complexity to satisfy. Diggin' it.

12.7 oz bottle poured into a tulip. 2013 Batch 7.

A: Pours a cloudy golden brown with a thin white head on top. Can see a bit of visible carbonation when you hold it up to the light.

S: Nice funky aroma with noticeable oak qualities. Can tell right off the bat this one is going to be a bit sour.

T: As with the aroma this one is funky. Initial sour tartness that blends with a bit of hop bitterness. Grain aspects kick in full gear on the backend and adds a depth of flavor.

M: Medium body with a creamy mouthfeel. The Brett gives this beer a dry finish. Tartness will give you a bit of a pucker.

Overall this is a very enjoyable brew with a range of flavors. Certainly not your standard saison.

A- Cloudy golden apricot hue into a Gueuze tumbler with a frothy foamy white cap. Head is about one finger high and has decent retention. Falls to a bubbly ring and some islands in the middle. Spotty lacing down most of the glass.

S- A nice blend of funky lactic and Brett notes mixed with a Belgian Saison yeast profile. Reminds me of a milder Gueuze in ways with the tart lemony lactic feel.

T- The underlying Saison strain opens up a lot more here and brings more of a balance to the flavor. Notes of Belgian yeast spices, lemon zest, apples, tart lactic acid and some funky Brett barnyard cherry. Some hints of light toast oak.

MF- Fizzy dried out uber light end body. Carbonation nice and high really accentuating the tart fruity flavors.

Very drinkable and the flavors are big but not fatiguing at all like sours can be. Good blend of tart lactic and fruity spicy Saison yeast.
