Big thanks to beersndrums for this one!

375 mL bottle poured into

L – Hazy ale gold color with a 3-finger frothy, rocky, white head. Pretty good retention but not much lacing. Still some appreciable bubbles despite the haze.

S – Lots of musty, funky, barnyard Brett along with grainy wheat, lactic acid, and lemons. One of the funkier-smelling saisons that I’ve had recently.

T – Starts off sweet with grainy wheat and soon picks up tart lemon and lactic flavors. As soon as these flavors appear, funky Brett and other peppery yeast take the forefront all the way to the finish.

F – Light-medium-bodied, good carbonation, a tart and effervescent mouthfeel, and a tart, funky, earthy, musty, and dry finish. All of the lactic, funky, and musty yeast flavors linger for a bit.

O – This is a pretty nice saison. It has all the elements of a fantastic beer of this style with grainy wheat, citrus notes, lactic yeast, and lots of Brett. However, with all of these aromas and flavors being present, it lacks the complexity that the great saisons have. Nevertheless, it is tasty and very drinkable. I’m interested to see what the other Crooked Stave beers that I have are like. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to try this one and the others, Jared!

A - pale honey gold with soft foamy head. Little to no lace.

S - piney, funky, tart and grassy.

T - tastes light and super refreshing. Lightly tart, with touches of pink lemon, lime, orange and raspberry. A little watered down and mineral-y. Some barnyard yeast and hay flavors. A nicely done light, tart saison. One can imagine this type of brew being dispensed to farmhands during the summer months centuries ago. Still does the trick nicely, though I may opt for a slightly heavier version of the style if given a choice -- this one is just a tad watery, though totally refreshing.

M - mouthfeel is thin, rounded out by prickly tartness, and finishes very dry.

A: Pours a hazy gold with a thick white head that leaves behind moderate lacing as it recedes.

S: Aromas of oak, must, pineapple, biscuit, lemon rind, cider vinegar, sea salt, and herbs are present on the nose.

T: Notes of minerals, must, sea salt, cider vinegar, lactic funk, lemon rind, lime zest, unripened pineapple, biscuit, oak, herbs, and wildflower honey explode on the palate. The finish is dry and tart with an unusual combination of lemon rind, oak, cider vinegar, lime zest, and honey flavors.

M: Light in body and dry. Carbonation is crisp, rendering this ale supremely easy to drink.

O: A very respectable and unique saison. It is well worth trying for fans of the style.

Poured from 375 ml bottle into snifter glass. Bottle is labeled 2013 Batch 8.

A: Pours a light lemon yellow with a two finger frothy white head that lasted a couple of minutes and leaving some spotty sticky lacing. It was a little cloudy on first pour, but cleared a bit as it warmed. The head eventually settled to a small ring around the edge.

S: Slightly spicy yeast mixed with light citrus fruits. Lemons and limes. Some barnyard funk that reminds me of wet grass.

T: Slightly sour with an earthy funk. Granny Smith apples, lemon zest, wet hay, and maybe a little black pepper.

M: Fairly light body almost watery and reasonably well carbonated for the style. Finish is crisp and dry leaving a tart memory.

O: Easy drinking and refreshing saison. Very enjoyable, but given the price, I was hoping for something a little more special.

Sampling this prior to the Surette based on reviews here, although I purchased both... Poured into a stemless wine glass to warm it a bit and try to push out the flavors.

A - plus side: nicely cloudy, tawny golden color, initially poured with a decent head
negatives: head disappeared quickly, very little lacing

S - light and citrusy with cedar, funkiness only on a deep inhale, not much complexity

T - matches the nose almost to a tee - but there is a really nice lingering lightness that comes from the (probably) low sugar content paired with the dry hopping.

M - crisp and easy, a bit too watery for me for a regular drinking beer.

O - It makes me think of a Gewurtztraminer. It would be a nice picnic beer for a summer day. It's certainly not bad, just a bit light and flat in character for me.
