With that dry, funky and earthy character in the foreground, Crooked Stave's Vieille kicks of with a ton of earthy character. If only it could hold onto it....

The Saison looks the part as its hazy straw character projects a weighted appearance that the taste and texture proves otherwise. Its medium haze diffuses its glow as its head billows the rim of the snifter. Retaining sturdily, the beer's lace swirls with broken rings. All in all, this is a well-sold Saison to the eye.

Aromatically, the beer sings with a plethora of wood aged earthiness! Starting with the tart scent of lemons and lime, the nose tilts toward sea air, musty attic-like aged woods, and a strong gamey, near-mushroom character that aids to its charm. Quite acidic, the notes of oddly placed sun-dried tomatoes give a vegetal tone to the scent, even as a strong pepper and almost-plastic scent rounds out its complex nose.

For better or worse, the flavor is simplified. Sure, the dried fruit and soft spice taste balances upon a dry cracker-like pilsner base, those sour-ish tastes are moderate and more resemble tartness. Its middle is lightly salty with leathery notes and sawdust. With the slight dried wood type of bitterness, the ale finish modestly citrusy with dried orange peels and an overall woody and citrusy tone- seemingly of sassafras.

The beer further recedes as the textures fall from full-on champagne to light and watery in an instant. Though this fuels its highly drinkable character, its earthen and complex aromas promise me a sharp and acidic after-palate that just doesn't develop. Its fleeting finish is watery and minerally- and a little alka-seltzer-like.

A- slightly hazy light gold with a huge white head that sticks to the edges while falling in the center.

S- tons of Brett derived character leap from the glass (and bottle for that matter). Horse blanket and wet earth lead with some lemon, tangerine and pineapple also peaking through. Some buttery, Chardonnay like oak shows more as it warms.

T- much less funky than the nose would suggest with a tart pop on the front and a mix of subtle earth, light oak and fruit in the middle with a long smooth, tart finish.

M- extremely creamy, with enough pop to get all the flavors where they should be. The mouthfeel might be derived from the oak tannins but its hard to be sure.

O- it's hard to think of another beer similar to this one. On the nose it seems like many funky, Brett beers but the mouthfeel and moderate tartness make this one entirely unique. A very enjoyable drinking experience all around.

Light golden in color with a bit of cloudiness. Not much at all in the way of foam. Brussels lacing. Oak and Chardonnay aroma. Crisp and dry on the palate with moderate carbonation. I get oak and green apples with a slightly tart and acidic finish. This is a very refreshing wild ale.

375ml bottle at fridge temp outed into a large tulip. Date/ batch info left blank?

Pours out a nice lighter golden color, just a slight haze to it, about one finger or so of white head off the pour that fades to a thin layer. Average head retention with only spotty lacing.

Initially the aroma is quite spicey with a grassy almost piney tree like aroma and maybe some hints of yeast phenols. Lots of lemongrass. As it opens some mustiness really comes out as well as maybe some white wine barrel character.

Lemongrass, hints of a peppery phenolic yeast spice. Has the very beginning stages of a slight Brett or lacto citrus tartness. Very nice. Complex. Hints of white wine, wet hay and hints of a grassy hop with a slightly bitter finish.

Bright mouthfeel, light in body, really thirst quenching. Great ABV.

This is everything a saison should be, just ideal. And amazingly drinkable as most of the standard crooked stave beers are. Amazing how the Brett and/or lacto is integrated just enough to be a nuance to the beer not a dominating factor resulting in a beer I think any beer drinker would enjoy.
