Batch 10

A: Pours a beautifully hazed straw yellow color. At first a two finger dense white head forms, but recedes in a second. Lots of sticky lace is left behind.
S: Earthy, musty yeast up front. Peppery spice, lemon and orange rind. Just a bit of soapy hops, which I am not always a fan of. Though that is always in the background.
T: Tart and sour lemon up front and center. A light soapy character again, but like the nose in the background. Some cracker like grains. Earthy yeast and white pepper lingers.
M/D: A light body that is perfectly crisp and effervescent. Perfectly smooth at the same time. So crisp, dry and refreshing. The bottle is to small cause I am through this way to fast. Very moreish, and a treat to drink.

I am nit picking, but the soapy hop character is just a slight detractor. Outside of that, an excellent tart Saison and one I wish I could get more easily.

375mL into a tulip. Pours a hazy pale straw w/ a thin white head.

Aroma is peppery, spicy, grassy, earthy, funky. Lemon, hay, Belgian yeast, pale malt.

Taste is a touch tart, earthy. Citrus, lemon, spice, pepper, maybe some clove. Lots of dry woody oak.

Mouthfeel seems a little thin, almost watery. Still it's crisp, bright and refreshing.

Overall a really nice, earthy, complex, flavorful saison.

2013 Batch 8. Poured from a bottle into a snifter, the beer is a bright, hazy, gold coloring, with a solid halo of bright white head. Aromas of toasted grains and honey forward, with notes of vanilla, basil, cilantro, butterscotch, and grass. Flavors are toasted grain and cereal forward, with a tart and tangy citrus blend to follow. Lemon and tangerine help kick up the sweetness, followed by an herbal blend of basil, all spice, subtle pepper, and lemon grass. Some astringent and medicinal notes in there, as well as subtle wood spice characteristics. The body is effervesced and extremely dry, giving the beer a dry white wine feel in mouth. The aftertaste has a sour overtone, with citrus and herbal spices lingering shortly. The finish is crisp and dry, and the carbonation helps to clean the palate quickly. Interesting brew.

2013/Batch 6 (4.2% ABV): Pours very cloudy gold color with chunks floating in it and a big foamy 2 finger white head that was full of bubbles and faded slowly, leaving good foamy lacing.

Smells of wet cardboard, orange peel, funky yeast, coriander, fruit and farm animals. It really smelt like being at a farm with that muddy animal aroma that was like a very sweaty worker who hadn’t showered in a few days and wore the same shirt.

Thankfully it tasted better than it smelled, with citrus fruit, peppery spices, tart cranberry, biscuit, dry orange peel, lemon zest, very funky yeast, sour apple, bitter red grapefruit, very sour white grapes and aspirin-like medicinal notes. The aftertaste has some oaky notes and more bitterness and sour funk, but the flavor got better and more complex as it warmed.

Mouthfeel left a pucker as it was like sucking on a lemon and then licking wet cardboard, but that’s to be expected from this kind of beer. It was a very light beer, almost watery with mild carbonation, and considering the high bitterness and sourness it went down easier than it should have. Overall it was good and I’d try it again, but it wouldn’t be a “go to” beer for me.
