Notes/Commercial Description:
This brew is made of a blend of different hops (36% Citra, 36% Mosaic, and 28% Simcoe). To keep things interesting, each batch is dry hopped using different experimental hops varietals. The bottles are marked on the back to show which strain was used for that specific batch.

Enjoyed out of a dark brown 375 mL bottle made from noticeably thick glass and marked with "2013/Batch 2". No idea what that means in terms of bottling. Poured into a 22 oz brandy snifter.

Appearance - After popping the top, the liquid inside immediately gets a topping of foam and a steady stream of bubbles rising up through the glass. A gentle pour yields a two finger head of silky and fine but dense foam. Retains for a few minutes before receding, leaving a healthy screen of lace around the sides of the glass. Body is a blend of orange and amber, with some maize highlights in places where the light shines through.

Smell - It comes leaping out of the bottle as soon as I open it, confirming the 100% brett with notes of wet hay, pungent grassy hops, barnyard funk, pineapple, and even some granny smith. Not quite sure how to impart the idea that this is funky and crisp all at the same time, which I find to be a fairly common characteristic of Brett beers. However, the aroma on this is one of the best I've had.

Taste - The yeasty funk of the Brett is still dominant, but there is a noticeable citric sourness, like lemon juice, but way less puckering, like watered down lemon juice. I also get fruit, again with pineapple and now some starfruit, as well as an impression of chardonnay, likely from the oak. I do get some lingering medicinal characteristic, but not in a bad way.

Mouthfeel - Moderate carbonation, light body and a bone-dry finish.

Overall, this is an outstanding Brett beer. It's brews like this that almost make one long for a new style called "Brett Beer", since this one tastes so similar to beers in other style categories due to the distinctiveness of the Brett. This is one of those beers that I could just keep drinking all night long. It's so drinkable but also so intense. Very glad to have Crooked Stave in Kansas City now.

Batch 2, Centennial & Simcoe

Pours a hazy golden straw color, which is lighter at the bottom and more golden at the top. The egg shell colored head is huge and pillowy, almost meringue like.

The aroma is tart and oaky. Big lemon twang. White grapes with a subtle hint of vinegar. There is some pepper and general spice.

The taste is tart and oaky as well. Again, big lemon and white grape flavor. Slightly grassy with a mix of pepper. Not much from the malt, slight bready flavor.

The feel is light and bright with airy carbonation. Sweet and tart on the palate. Good balance and drinks very easy.

A nice tart pale ale. The hops don't really pop but the oak sure does. Worth a purchase.

Batch 3, 2013 Simcoe and Centennial Hops
Bitter and sour do not belong together.
Looks: pale, not much head, dies quickly. bottle frothed over when opened
smell: deliciously fruity, from both yeast and hops. additional hop dankness. Slight medicinal funk
taste: Bitter and sour and medicinal. couldn't finish bottle.
Overall: I love Crooked Stave and will definitely buy them again, Surette and St Bretta are both amazing beers but i didnt enjoy this one and dont feel it was worth $10
