This brew is made of a blend of different hops (36% Citra, 36% Mosaic, and 28% Simcoe). To keep things interesting, each batch is dry hopped using different experimental hops varietals. The bottles are marked on the back to show which strain was used for that specific batch.

The bottle is dated 2013 batch 2

A golden beer with a slight hazy. The head is long lasting made of rocky, off-white bubbles that leave a a little bit of fine lacing on the glass.

It smells of citrus with a strong, grapefruit-like aroma like the kind you get in a tart Gueuze. There is some barnyard funk but it's mild. A moderate oak aroma. The hops are faded which is to be expected with age.

A strong citrus and citrus peel flavor at first with a grapefruit-like tart quality to it. There is a medium-strong bitterness with a medium tartness against a light honey-like sweetness making for a beer that is pretty tart and bitter on balance. The finish is very dry with a citrus zest aftertaste.

A light bodied beer with a strong level of carbonation.

I love the bold tart and bitterness in this beer with little sweetness. I have got to track down a bottle to see how that plays of the hops.

12.7 oz bottle, number 344. Pours clear straw yellow with a small white head that goes to a thin film that leaves some lacing. There's lots of yeast haze at the bottom.

The aroma is tropical fruits and funky brett with some piney hops.

The flavor is sweet malts and some tropical fruit with funky brett and medium bitterness from piney hops. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low smooth carbonation.

Overall, a terrific brett ipa. Nice blend of fruits, funk and pine.

Bottle from Proof. Pours a very hazy golden yellow with hints of orange. The color of fresh pineapple. This bottle was alive. When I popped the cap off it started coming right out of the bottle. I had to pour immediately. Very large bubbly white head with hints of orange. Sticky in some areas of the glass, apparently this glass wasn't cleaned well, my bad. Head retention is great, nice layer on top and thick collar at the edges of the glass. Aroma is very juicy. I smell fresh squeezed OJ and some mango and pineapple. Nice musty, barnyard like aromas as well. Taste is identical to the aroma. Juicy juicy juicy... Tart and tangy citrus with a little bit of dry yeast funk present throughout. Thick, creamy body. Feels almost like a nitro beer.

Thanks to my Buddy Mitch in Colo. for the load of CS bottles he sent me. My first CS beers and so far I'm impressed.

12.7 oz. bottle

This one pours clouded medium tangarine, moderate off white head, collar and tiny bubble film

The nose is whee things get interesting. Nice citrus, tropical fruits and a bag of fresh hops come to mind. Also a bit of musty barnhard in the rear.

Creamy and quite smooth on the tongue, more soft citrus notes with lime and melon up front. Tart in the finish with cut grass, cat piss, biting hops, more lime and again some mold/must. Complex and simply delicious.

Crooked Stave please begin distributing to NY state as soon as possible.

A: Cloudy pale orange with a fluffy white head.
S: Wow, tons of brett, followed by a huge tropical fruit, citrus, floral and funky smell. A bit of rubber in the aroma as well, I only noticed it once the beer warmed up a bit.
T: Lots of citrus, a bit sour. Tangerine, grapefruit, peach, sweet malt and some nice funkiness on top of it. The only thing that detracted a bit was a slightly astringent flavor, but it was only noticeable once the beer warmed up a bit.
M: Medium bodied, nice carbonation. Carbonation is a tiny bit too high but it's not really a problem.
O: A great beer, would love to have this one again.

I see a white head with a millimeter or 2 thickness on the top and intensely packed together small bubbles. Light gold in color with a heavy haziness. The aroma is astonishing. I get fresh citrus hops mingling very well with Brett, but the Brett clearly dominates, especially as it warms. The taste is also quite good. I get the tartness of the Brett on the front of the palate and the bitterness of the citrus hops on the back of the palate. I get the oak flavoring throughout. The mouthfeel is complex with a bit of a dry chalkiness that is fitting. This is more than a beer. It's an epiphany.

L: Pours hazy gold under a persistent clingy dense 2” moussey, pillowy white foam cap
S: Tart, funk, faint wet horse blanket, spice, citrus.
T: Very well rounded with delicate lemony, funky Brettanomyces flavors and textures balanced by rich light malt and the array of hop flavors (citrus, piney, tropical, melon) and an assertive bitterness.
F: Exceptionally creamy, exceptionally finely bubbled carbonation, exquisite Brettanomyces texture.
O: In a lot of funky beers the brewer will balance the wild yeast flavors out with fruit. Here the brewer does the same thing with malt and hop flavors to a very ncie effect.

Bottle (2013)

Acquired via trade
Thanks, quirkzoo!

Bright, glowing, burnt orange with a very persistent, resilient, sticky, near-white head. Lots of irregular sticky lacing left down the glass. Mild sediment seen throughout and settling at the bottom of the glass. Very pretty American-brewed Belgian style ale.

A fantastic combination of bright, juicy, citrus hop components combined with rusting, earth, mild dirt, and just a little bit of funk from the yeast. A new world-take on an old-world style. Fantastic. The hop/fruit flavors come in mild waves of mango, overripe orange, and grass. The yeast presents a mild dirty, well-worn leather character as well.

The flavor is quite similar to the aroma, with the bright citrus and juicy fruit components combining nicely with the old-world Brett yeast notes. Mild funk but lots of grass, earth, and dirty leather. Low-moderate bitterness.

Medium bodied with high carbonation. Yeast and hops linger nicely.

Fantastic. A wonderful beer from possibly my favorite American brewer.

Poured from a 12.7 oz. bottle into a chalice. May 2015 batch with Amarillo.

Appearance: Pours a very hazy yellowish orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Huge three finger white head which slowly settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A very funky and sour aroma with a big scent of Brett and citrus hops. Big scent of Brett yeast with lots of sour and tart funk. Hints of pepper and other spices. Fruit hints of white grapes and green apple. Citrus hop hints of orange, lemon zest, grapefruit, and mango. Also some earthy and floral hints of grass. A very good funky aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a funky, sour, and juicy taste with big notes of Brett and citrus hops. Upfront presence of Brett yeast with some farmhouse funk. Tart and sour fruit notes of green apple and white grapes. Citrus hop notes of orange peel, lemon zest, mango, and grapefruit. Floral and earthy hops with some notes of grass. Also some spice with notes of pepper. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a high level of carbonation. Crisp, juicy, and very drying.

Overall: A very good Sour IPA. Big sour and tart presence of Brett with a good presence of citrus hops.
