2013/Batch 3 (Galaxy)

Thanks, Mark, for looking out! Hop Savant's looks just like pineapple juice in it's sweet little Crooked Stave snifter. Sunset orange highlights accent the look. There's a good amount of murk but this one went from mail-to fridge-to glass, there wasn't much time to settle in between. A finger's worth of creamy ecru head forms on the pour and slowly falls to a fat ring and skim coat. The ring leaves sheet lacing down the glass. She's purty!

A big deep whif goes like this; barnyard, pineapple, mango, overripe peaches. The barnyard is pretty substantial with horseblanket, damp hay, and that all around horse stall aura. The barnyard rules but each deep breath is rewarded with juicy, dripping tropical fruit. The tropical fruit gets more and more assertive as it warms. This beer gets the salivary glands working over.

The flavor doesn't match the depth but it's pretty damn close. The hop profile actually hits upfront in the flavor while the brett pops on the backend. Tropical flavors kick off with a muddle of citrus, mango, and pineapple. There's a grassy note in the middle before the barnyard washes through. Each individual aroma was present in the flavor but they ran together a bit, not as clean, still delicious.

Snappy carbonation rushes th emoderate body through while the finish is dry as the Sahara. There's an assertive hop bitterness that, when combined with the dryness and prickly carbonation, make for a tongue thrasher.

This is the first of the Hop Savant series that I've had and I'm highly impressed. It's so unique and unusual. I'd love to be able to try two or three fresh batches side by side, really see how the different varietals affect the base.

A: Cloudy pale orange with a fluffy white head.
S: Wow, tons of brett, followed by a huge tropical fruit, citrus, floral and funky smell. A bit of rubber in the aroma as well, I only noticed it once the beer warmed up a bit.
T: Lots of citrus, a bit sour. Tangerine, grapefruit, peach, sweet malt and some nice funkiness on top of it. The only thing that detracted a bit was a slightly astringent flavor, but it was only noticeable once the beer warmed up a bit.
M: Medium bodied, nice carbonation. Carbonation is a tiny bit too high but it's not really a problem.
O: A great beer, would love to have this one again.

A fantastic and very interesting beer. I love the contrast and partnership of the funk and American hops. It starts from the first sniff and goes right through the lingering finish. Both aspects contribute nicely without interfering with each other. This is a unique and well crafted beer!

From 08/30/13 notes. Have seen this around NYC a lot lately so bought a bottle at Ginger Man. Poured from a 375ml bottle into a tulip, bottle number 344 on it.

a - Pours a hazy, golden orange color with two inches of medium white head that leaves quickly, and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of brett, oranges, citrus hops, earthy notes, tropical fruits, light oak, and some light pine hops. Nice nose, more hops than I was expecting.

t - Tastes of brett, sour fruits, oranges, citrus hops, wheat, spice, tart apples, and floral hops. Little more sour than the nose and more brett, a slight step up from the nose.

m - Light to medium body and moderate to high carbonation. Pretty easy to drink overall.

o - Overall a very nice bretty pale ale. Loads of brett and citra hops so if you like those, you'll like this one a lot. I don't know if it is worth the price stores and bars charge for it, so I won't pick it up often, but it is a very good beer.

Pours pale gold with some cloudiness. Big white head. Lots of fine foam. Lots of lacing and good retention. Nice looking for something that has spent time on wood. Aroma is a mix of oak, tropical and citrus hops and brett fruitiness. Big peaches, pineapples, mangoes, mint, tangerine. Also, a light mineral note and some gentle earthiness. Nice and clean like a good all brett beer should be. Taste is fairly dry but there's some hop juiciness counterbalancing that. Lightly bitter. Lots of wood. Light fresh malt flavor. Brett fruitiness and earth. Flavorful hops - big on peaches, juniper, lavender and limes. Light on the palate. Pretty gentle carbonation. Clean hop-brett finish. Another very nice beer from CS. I continue to be impressed with their work.

This one pours a light bodied clear tangerine with a one finger, soapy and sticky head. The nose is dry, citrusy, and has a nice amount of Brett. It has a little dried peach skins to it. It smells pretty similar to Luciernaga from Jolly Pumpkin. The flavors are dry and fruity up front. There are dried peach and apricot notes before it goes into an off dry Brett character. The level of Brett is perfect in my opinion. It has great and well rounded flavors without any aspect really dominating. It drinks light and off dry and leaves just enough Brett in the after taste. Overall this is a near perfect beer for the style. I could drink this all the time if it were more easily available. Great job by Crooked Stave once again.

A - Dark hazy golden ale with a big white head. Really a great looking beer

S - Light oak, lemon peel, blue cheese funk with a good citrus presence. Hops meets funk. Like a hoppy Saison

T - Lemony, tart, oak, blue cheese funk. Slight hoppy presence. Light white wine. Not much hops but there is a nice slight citrus and grapefruit presence near the end

M - Light carbonation with a sharp tartness. The finish is dry as well as a slight resin presence that lingers on the tongue

O - This is more of a Saison with hops than a hoppy Saison. This has great tartness, slight funk and a slight hoppiness on the backend.
