I loved my trip to Crooked Stave. I was only in Denver for a short time and it was close to unanimous from local BAs that Crooked Stave was the place to go if you could only go to one of the many great breweries in the Denver area. After trying their beers and thinking most of them were great, I was surprised at how slow it was in the tasting room on a Saturday night. From my tourist perspective, it did not seem like the brewery was in the best Denver neighborhood, but like a lot of small breweries it was located in an industrial park with plenty of parking, which is great for someone new to the area. The tasting room had a typical set up with a small L-shaped bar and about three or four tables. I would think it would get pretty crowded, when they get busy. Both of the guys working the bar when we were there were great! They were very friendly and when we told them we were from Austin, we started sharing stories about the Austin beer and live music scenes. My only complaint was they didn't offer more variety. They had six beers on tap and three beers for sale in bottles. I wished I could have tried more of their stuff, because everything I had was good to great. I highly recommend stopping in here for any BAs visiting the Denver area.

As much as I like Crooked Stave, and love the old taproom, the new taproom always makes me kind of sad: It's regularly loud (from the other locations in The Source), bright, and feels empty; combine that with the fact that the service has never been more than adequate and I'm happy to stop in for a pint, but I certainly don't show up here to hang out.

Don't get me wrong, the beer is phenomenal. It's just that the space has some minor issues. On the plus side, it's close to downtown and there's plenty of parking. Located in an old industrial complex about 2 miles NNE of downtown, the space is shared with a number of other middle-upper end establishments (restaurant, salumeria, meat shop, liquor store, and others). The atmosphere is big and open. It's relatively easy to get to (by Denver standards). The service is second to none. The servers know what they're talking about and enjoy their work.

There are a few negatives. First, while there are a few food establishments, I couldn't find any quick pick-up and go places. I wanted to spend as little time as possible grabbing something to eat and getting back to drinking. Maybe I didn't look hard enough (there's suppose to be a taqueria there, but I don't remember seeing one). Second, the prices seemed to be a bit high. Draft prices were about the same as what you'd pay for a take-home bottle on a per oz. basis. Would this stop me from coming back? Absolutely not, not everything on draft goes into bottles.

All in all, it's a must for anyone who hasn't been and loves sours.

Tap room is located in a pretty cool building called The source. Good food in the building to grab since Crooked Stave offers none. The actual bar and seating area wasn't too comfortable, mostly hard bar stools with no patio or outdoor seating. They always have something interesting on tap which is a plus. They also have a decent selection of limited bottle releases.

Nice spot at the Source in Denver. Lots of cool beer on tap. Funky sours and wild ales. Bartenders are nice and informative. Pretty expensive, but they have a 3 ounce sample size, so you can try multiple beers.
