I am a die-hard Aventinus devotee, and nothing - and I mean nothing - can sway me from my devotion to that beer.

As if this near fanatical devotion wasn't weird enough, I am a big ol' hophead to boot. In fact, I've publicly declared my favorite style to be American Double IPA.

Go figure.

Still, when my new favorite beer buyer said "If you like Aventinus, then you MUST try this Weihenstephaner Vitus," I was like, "OK. Bring it."

He brought it. And I bought it. And you know what?

I'm only mildly impressed.

First, the color, as other BAs have noted, is light like a traditional hefe. Nice cloudiness, golden in hue, if not downright strange looking in my Aventinus glass.

As for smell...there's banana, clove, maybe a hint of dates and raisins, but not enough. And - here's where my enthusiasm wanes - no cloves. Also, there's a soapiness to the aroma that reminds me of perfume. Not sure I like this very much.

The taste is good, but not as complex as I'd hoped, and more like a traditional hefe-weizen than I'd expected.

The mouthfeel is smooth and velvety - quite pleasant, actually.

All in all, drinkable and enjoyable.

I enjoyed this brew after a little run around the neighborhood this evening, watching some fishing shows on television. Since I think that Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen is one of the greatest beers ever created, any rating of Weihenstephaner products may be skewed. But I digress. Poured from the bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance - Pours a magnificent hazy yellow color, the color of hay. Decent soapy head of one finger which sticks around for a minute, leaving some lacing on the glass. Carbonation bubbles race up from the bottom to the top throughout the brew. Packaging is classic, no need to alter. Brewed in accordance with a purity law from 500 years ago. Thats legit.

Smell - Smacks of banana, cloves, spices, bread, and yeast. A little bit of funk to it

Taste - Very rich, banana and sweet spice flavor dominates the palate in what is a magnificent tasting brew.

Mouthfeel - Unlike the beer I drank earlier, which disappointed on mouthfeel, this brew's strong point is its mouthfeel. The carbonation and effervescence are excellent. Perfectly balanced, so drinkable, almost unreal this is a 7.7 ABV beer. The finish on this brew is awesome.

Overall - Just what I expected out of this brewery and this beer: excellence all around the horn. The Germans have this brewing thing down pat, and it is difficult for anyone to compete with them, at least in my opinion. While we Americans do have the IPA market locked up, I firmly believe that if you are looking for an excellent wheat beer, look no further than a German or Belgian brewery.

Had on-tap at Bier Garden Asheville. Served in a tapered glass.

A- Pours a hazy light amber color with a 1/4 inch white head that retains a bit before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a small side patch of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a jagged ring behind.

S- Good whiff of banana and spice. Slightly effervescent.

T- Tons of banana, bubble gum and spice. Wheaty, yeasty, rich. Cannot believe this is 7.7% ABV. Semisweet.

M- Milky texture with a proper amount of carbonation (medium) and a body leaning toward the lighter side.

O- A premium example of the style at a non-premium price of $3.50. What a steal. Asheville's Bier Garden isn't the first place I suggest to have a beer when in town but they sneak in some nice specials here and there and have a very decent selection.

Picked this up at a great beer shop in Darmstadt, Germany, Maruhn Welt der Getränke. Cloudy yellow-orange pour with a two finger foamy pure white head with decent retention and lacing. The nose is classic Weizen with spicy wheat up front along with hints of banana, clove, lemon, caramel, yeast, and grass. The taste is bold, spicy, and extremely rich with lots of sweet caramel malt along with hints of banana bread, lemon, clove, pear, apple cider, yeast, and grass. The mouthfeel is really thick and chewy with perfect carbonation and a nice tangy finish. Overall, this is definitely the most flavorful Weizen I've ever had. Having lived in Germany for 13 years and only recently re-visiting Weizens, I'm kicking myself. I've really become a big fan of these beers and will definitely stock up on this gem!
