BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan
Germany | website

Style: Weizenbock

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our light-coloured, spicy single-bock, “Vitus” is saturated with fine yeast and a creamy foam. It is a specialty with a round character based on the extra long storage time. The fruity smell of dried apricots joins aromas of citrus, cloves and hints of banana. Full-bodied and sparkling with an effervescent mouthfeel. Thus, the Vitus does not taste like a typical Bock beer but more like a noble, fruity wheat beer. Perfect with red meat, strong cheese and also able to guide desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Not a huge wheat beer fan, though not averse to it.. that being said this is on of the better ones I've had. Also worth noting I've not had the Weihenstephaner Hefe yet.

L : Golden, Hazy

S: Typical of what a wheat beer smells, quite nice. A subdued fruity/yeast smell.

T: Somewhat sharp , wheaty yeast flavor pretty much spot on to the brewers description. Citrus/Clove/Bananas, not overpowering and quite pleasant. A bit of heat from the alcohol is also notable and also pleasant. The best tasting wheat beer I've had so far for sure.

F: Very crisp, sharp, refreshing. Very drinkable despite its strength.

O: Excellent beer. Not an expert on wheats but this surely up there with the best. Usually i can only handle one or two wheats in a sitting but i could see an evening drinking only this if the mood struck me.

Hazy bright yellow straw color with a foamy white head. To me, the banana dominated the nose, but also nice clove, some fruit, and some bread. Taste is big, featuring orange, apricot, banana, clove, and bready malt. Lively carbonation and a dry finish.

Big head. Glorious slightly cloudy blonde in the light. Clearly contains wheat and its specialized yeast giving us those fruity, banana aromatics. Taste is close to "Wow" and very refreshing (particularly after riding my bike.)
Once the bubbly recedes, it is a nice calming beverage that balances the fruit with just enough spice to finish.
Listed in the "1001 Beers To Taste Before You Die", this beer deserves it.
And we deserve it.
I have two sets of notes, and I will have it at least a fourth time before I die... despite the competition.

Pours a very hazy straw yellow color with a thick, well retained one inch head that leaves little lacing. Smells of yeast, clove, banana and a bit of lemon. Taste is quite bready, with some sweetness, banana, lemon, and clove. Finishes slightly bitter. Mouthfeel is quite dry, well carbonated and crisp. Very good beer, easily drinkable.

Having strayed away from delving into the depths of varieties of European ales for some time to due my underdeveloped pallette as a newcomer to the beer scene, its taken some time to get to some of these styles. But as my pallette has developed, I am finding these once alien styles to be something of an art. With such a deep lineage behind these ales and the undying commitment that comes along with it, its hard not to have a deep appreciation for what they stand for.

All of this aside: on to my first review on this style.

This one pours a dark, glowing yellow hue, accompanied by a two finger, off-white head. As this one warmed the aromas grew immensely; the usual suspects of banana and clove stand out strong and are accompanied by a troupe of lemon, grass, straw, malt. Taste is fantastic and rounded well; banana, clove, lemon candy, dark malts, straw, wheat, oats, butterscotch, vanilla, nutmeg, chalk, underripe apricot, a touch of apple and baked bread.

Mouthfeel is quite dry, but is a bit chewy, nearly full bodied, crisp and rounds out well. Looking forward to adventuring even deeper into the world of these ales an excellent stepping stone to add to the journey. Cheers!

A - Just a small amount of haze with a bright medium yellow gold color and a massively thick and rocky white head. Carbonation is very steady and active, this beer looks great!

S - A slight bit of bread crust, lemon, straw, bright citrus, a little musty.

T - Wheaty/bready, lemon, golden honey malt, some banana, and finishes with faint cloves and bready honey sweetness with a very light touch of grassy bitterness.

M - Big medium body, chewy, velvety carbonation.

O - 'Can't say anything bad about this beer, it's incredibly well done. I think I'll have another one, 'nuff said!

Poured 2/3rds of 1 pint 0.9 fl oz into a tulip.
Look: A very hazy golden yellow with a thick white head that leaves prominent lacing as it dissipates into a thin foam. Constant and active carbonation can be seen.
Smell: Heavy yeast smell, almost off-putting, probably from imported shipping. Background scents of sweet banana and malt.
Taste: Light but noticeable bitterness followed immediately by banana and sweet malt. Lingering light banana taste.
Feel: Heavy carbonation and warming sensation in chest. Definitely a strong beer.
Overall: A beautiful beer. Sensational, diverse, and complex taste. Definitely a high abv so be cautious.

Appearance: A very nice golden with good head. Cloudy

Aroma: A good bit of banana nut bread with some other mildly fruity flavors

Taste: Bananas! After a few drinks there are more wheat notes pronounced.

Feel: Very smooth but has substance. More thick than watery

Overall: Very smooth, very drinkable. However rather fruity and carbonated. One or two bottles would be great with dinner but not recommended for an evening of drinking unless you are sharing the rest of the bottles.

This beer pours a very cloudy light straw with fairly large head. The aroma offers up bright lemon, banana, and peach, as well as strong clove and nutmeg, and and undercurrent of wet hay. The flavor is less bright than the aroma, with the spicy clove, allspice and nutmeg most prominent, followed by underripe peach and apricot, sweet banana, and some grassy yeastiness as well. The mouthfeel is quite full and fizz. Overall this is a very different beer. The flavors are excellently complex, but I cannot say I love the whole. Reminds me of a Tripel, but with none of the balance, tension, and richness that make that style one of a favorite. Good beer, but probably not my style.

Nice golden pour. Smell of banana hits you up front. A sweet wheat bock that goes down easy. I would have liked a little more bitter to balance out the sweet.

Pours two fingers of head on a cloudy light straw body.
The aroma is dry wheat and a bit of caramel.
The taste has a moderate caramel sweetness mixed with a little banana and lemon. Complex and balanced.
The texture is fairly soft.
An outstanding beer.

Poured pint bottle into stein. A sick green-yellow with three fingerish head.

Nose of cloves, henbit, old vinegar

Tastes complex. Banana up front, pear, floral, faint clove. Reminiscent of abbey ale.

Mouth is a stirring, dull tart. Very distinct sensation.

Cheers to one of Earth's oldest breweries. A hearty, fascinating experience. For fans of saisons, dunkels, dubbels, and beyond. Weizenbock too, of course.

From a 11.2 oz bottle. Pours to a hazy straw appearance with a puffy, three finger head. Smells of clove, pepper, grass, faint banana and yeast. Tastes fantastic with clove, bready malt, creamy banana and dried fruit. Mouthfeel is nearly perfect with great creaminess that doesn't come across heavy or plodding. I can sum this up quite easily - this is a well crafted, tasty beer.

L: Pours a slightly hazy straw-gold – very light for the style – with a creamy tight-knit head and active carbonation. As expected, this beer has excellent head retention

S: Strong phenolic character and very spice forward. Rich, with lots of banana and bready sweetness. Clove, coriander and cinnamon, with a dollop of honey.

T: Bready and sweet with a touch of booze. Lots of sweet baking spices and bananas, dry crackers, prunes, apricots and vanilla. There’s a perceptible wheat character adding to the breadiness. Despite the richness, it never gets cloying and has tremendous drinkability.

F: Medium body with creamy, abundant carbonation, and a very slick mouthfeel. Despite a bit of ethanol in the taste, there is little to no heat on the palate.

Thoughts: It doesn’t get much better than this one. Probably the best representation of the style, from one of the best breweries in the world. Dangerously drinkable.

Weihenstephaner seems to do no wrong. This beer is no exception. Pours a beautiful bright and cloudy orange with a thick, dense creamy white head. Laces on the light side. Effervescence is Belgian tripel like. Reminiscent of the aroma in their hefeweizen (hello banana and clove), but with a slightly fruiter quality. I get a little apricot and some bartlett pear in the flavor. Mouthfeel is superb; soft, almost fluffy, light and yet retains some of the residual brewing sugars, really just a delicate and superb feel on my palate.

Poured to a Weihenstephaner glass.

A: Appearance wise, Vitus has a one finger head with a crystal clear yellow body. This is a promising appearance.
S: Here, I'd say that I've had better beers from Weihenstephaner, aroma wise. Both the Hefe and the Dunkel are better. Here, the smell presents itself very bready with clove. It's still great though.
T: This is where things start to get interesting. Taste wise, this beer is almost perfect for a weiss-derivative beer. Bready with clove, but on steroids. You can see why this beer won the WBA'11 Best Beer Of The World Award.
M: Again, almost pure perfection.
O: For me it's simple. If you want anything that's related with wheat on a beer, please let you attention converge to Weihenstephaner. They know what they're doing. And they're doing it with style.

APPEARANCE: A hazy lemon-gold. Two fingers of pillowy white head that leaves a nice thick ring on top of the beer. Moderate carbonation rising. Leaves some sliding lacing down the glass.
AROMA: Big banana bread, clove, grassy, dried light fruit. Has that familiar wheat quality and a little peppery spice.
TASTE: Nice little bit of sourdough banana bread, dried light fruit, cloves, nice peppery quality through the whole sip.
FEEL: Nice full body, full carbonation, soft wheat characteristic.
OVERALL: Great brew. Full flavor, great level of carbonation, no alcohol taste.

Poured a slightly hazy, light golden color. Medium head with not much lacing.
Smell was banana and bubblegum with maybe a bit of the apricot and clove that others have noted.
Taste was definitely apricot and banana with a little bit more clove as the beer warmed up. Very little lingering taste.
Overall, a solid beer that hides the alcohol well. For those that like beers with strong fruit flavors, you'll like this a lot. Weizenbocks (esp. Aventinus Tap 6) are sometimes recommended as aging candidates but I definitely don't think aging will change or improve this one. If you have it, drink it now.

If you take Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier and turn it up to eleven, you get Vitus. It pours to the requisite large, creamy white head on a hazy, straw-colored body; lacing is fair, mostly bands with some blotches. The aroma is big for a wheat beer: ripe bananas, cloves, wheat and alcohol, with hints of caramel and citrus rind for good measure. The palate follows the nose, plus a nice yeast presence; the alcohol is very well-hidden. The yeast, esters, and wheat are in perfect balance, just like they are in the Hefe Weissbier. The finish is pretty clean, showing just a hint of caramel and wheat; the linger is a subtle wheaty/estery flavor that stays around for a couple of minutes. The mouthfeel is quite big for the light body, and the texture is medium-creamy and moderately peppery from the well-expressed carbonation. Great wheat beer from a top-notch brewery! Pours a glowing hazy yellow. The medium thick head is white and foamy, leaving behind no lasting lace. Banana, clove, and citrus fruit notes combine to deliver a tasty aroma. The taste is sublime, with hints of banana, clove, citrus, and a little spicy yeast to round it out. While it feels pleasant and sweet to drink, the spicy yeast keeps the balance from going overly sweet. Mouth feel is full bodied and bold. It does feel mouth coating (in a good way). Overall, this is an exceptional beer. Nothing too fancy about it. Just straight forward great with a few extra flavors as a bonus.

Served in a 12oz snifter.

Very cloudy golden body, eggshell white velvet creamy head, looks like foamed milk, with no lace. Nose has a lot of clove spice, a bit of caramel. The flavor is similar, the spicy clove all but overpowers the rest of the flavor, which contains some faint warm sweetness and banana and apricot. Finishes dry with a touch of yeast. At least it is full-flavored. Body is great; creamy and full, but not very heavy.
Honestly, I was expecting more. The spicy clove was just too much, barely leaving room for any malty, fruity, ester notes. Look and feel were extraordinary, however. I'm always impressed with what the Germans produce with basic ingredients, but this didn't live up to what I'd dreamed it would be.

Poured from 22 oz bottle. Look is hazy, light golden, with huge head of white puff. Carbonation remains, but not very visible with the hazy body. Head clings and bubbles move slowly, but surely, leaving a clean glass and no residual lacing. Smell is all bubble gum and spice. Very strong, sweet, with cloves and coriander. The taste was better than expected. I knew it was world class, but after the smell, I was expecting something like a bubble gum-banana-yeast... which isn't usually my favorite. This one balanced, with more spice and dark fruit in the taste, and the sweeter notes mostly just a reminder in the smell as I tipped my glass. Very refreshing, Minimal alcohol taste, slightly drying. Might not be overpowering or have the giant conflict of flavors compared to some of the 'new brews ', but this is a classic, and has stayed affordable and accessible. Just a Nice, Clean, Pure taste, and now I'm going to finish off the rest of the bomber.

Pale yellow, good amount of head with medium retention. The aroma to me is like the Weihenstephaner weiss
on steroids. Clove, banana, bubblegum and a bit of malts. The same on the taste, followed by a mild bitterness that lingers. Pretty robust flavors and great mouthfeel, fizzy and bready. Very nice.
