Beer bottle (50 cl.) purchased from Bière & Chopes, and tasted in 2012.

Appearance : clear golden color, with huge white foamy head.
Smell : yeasty and wheaty aromas.
Taste & mouthfeel : sweet and wheaty flavors, with alcohol presence and low bitterness.
Drinkability : a good beer in the German style Weizenbock.

In terms of drinkability, this is superb. I get a beautiful array of flavors in the nose. I get some, honey, yeast, spice, slight hops, toasted grain, sweet malt, pineapple and passion fruit, some marshmallow and sweet candy undertone.

This drinks so smoothly, I get wheat, fresh hops and tropical citrus, a nice dose of spiciness and blended sweetness from grain and bread, malt, an almost maple syrup or molasses, and this great cotton candy finish that is sweet yet dry. Wonderful aftertaste, nice esters and sweetness. I thought at the beginning sip this would be like a triple or very belgium-esque, but is was surpisingly well balanced and superbly balanced. Great mix of flavors, alcohol is almost non-existent in the taste.

Great brew,

Cheers!!

Poured from a bottle into a large wheatbeer glass. Pours a cloudy, pale orange-yellow (far too light for the style) with a massive well-sustained head. The nose is bright and fruity with notes of oranges, bananas, and cloves.

Nice medium-bodied flavor with semi-sweet, fruity notes and a lightly dry finish. The taste follows the nose very well. There is a slight bready graininess up front that is nicely accompanied by orange and banana notes. At mid-palate, the flavor turns slightly tart and acidic leading up to a pleasant finish. Mouthfeel is medium-firm and suits the flavor nicely. Unfortunately, I don't get many complex malt notes. Whatever melanoidins there are seem to be constrained to mid-palate and are otherwise buried under a sea of spicy phenols.

At the risk of sounding completely ignorant, I have to profess my surprise that this is considered such a highly-rated weizenbock. It's more like a hefeweiss. Don't misunderstand me. It tastes great, but if I must consider it a weizenbock, then I am confident in saying that it doesn't hold a candle to Aventinus Tap 6. In my opintion, the lack of a substantial malt character hurts this beer.

500 mL bottle poured into a weizen glass at slightly warmer than refrigerator temperature.

L - Hazy deep gold color with a huge 4-finger thick, creamy, pillowy white head. Excellent retention but not much lacing. Lots of bubbles. Looks great except for the fact that it’s a little light in color for a weizenbock.

S - Tons of banana. Also clove, bubblegum, rich malt, wheat, and yeast aromas. Smells rich but sweet and refreshing at the same time.

T - This beer is outstandingly delicious. Sweet banana, bubblegum, and caramel malt flavors with spicy clove and yeast notes. Also enough bread and wheat notes to make it taste like banana bread. Outstanding.

F - Light-to-medium bodied, tons of mouth-tingling carbonation, rich a creamy mouthfeel, and a refreshingly dry finish. Sweetness, tingling from the carbonation, and dryness lingers for a nice amount of time.

O - I’m not usually a big fan of wheat beers, but this beer makes me want to explore way more of them. It is absolutely fantastic. It smells, tastes, and feels terrific with absolutely no sign of the 7.7% ABV. I can definitely see why this was named the best beer in the world at the 2011 World Beer Awards. Close to perfection.

Served in weisen glass.

Appearance: Lightly hazy gold. Comes off transparent but slight and I do mean slight cloudiness at the edge of the white head. Head alone rises to almost three fingers length off a gentle pour.

Smell: Awkwardly yeasty. But light.

Taste: Complex, a lot to do with the yeast, slight banana and comes off very full.

Mouth: Medium carbonation, smooth dude. It is borderline perfect with a sticking after-taste.

Overall: Well balanced beer that should not be taken for granted, doesn't cost much and gives you a lot. Drink with pride, Salud!

Bottle from Beer Deluxe.

A - Pours a quite cloudy medium golden colour with a good two finger fluffy white head. Good carbonation. No lace, minimal retention.

S - Clove is quite strong. Some pretty rich malt and banana. Stewed banana. The richness is such a lovely component when blended with everything else. It's one of those aromas that you can't quite pin down the quality in, you just know it's great. Wheat is present as well.

T - Nice rich malt with a nice clovey element and banana with a gentle hop component. A really interesting flavour component. Wheat, some hop, and a citrus note too. With banana again too.

M - Nice carbonation, medium body and a sweet, wheaty/banana/clove finish.

O/D - A lovely beer. Complexities combined with subleties. Nice stuff. So many flavours.

A: pours a hazy yellow with three fingers of white head that fades into a dense cap with decent lacing.

S: sweet clove and banana aromas up front with slight citrus notes and a sweet, bready finish.

T: similar to the aroma, cloves and banana flavors hit first. Orangey citrus follows with sweet wheat and bready flavors on the finish.

M: medium-light body, this beer is crisp and very refreshing. Very drinkable.

O: quite a good beer, overall. Flavorful, drinkable, and refreshing.

Aroma: Clove and some vanilla. Pears and plums. Lots of bready malt. Hops and floral. The aroma is bold overall. Lacking in dark fruits for the style.

Appearance: Yellow in color. Very cloudy. Little retention other than some foam around the edges and a thin layer on top. Tall clean white head.

Taste: Bold yeasty phenols lots of clove, black pepper, and some vanilla. A large dose of fruity esters, a bit darker than the fruits in the aroma. Mild dates, some plum and pear follows. Moderate hops are floral and pine. Alcohol is just a bit solvent-like. As it warms up more residual sugar and wheat shows up.

Mouthfeel: Medium body. Moderate carbonation, which stings the tongue and roof of the mouth a bit. Slick and creamy. Mildly warming.

Overall: A bit lacking in the darker flavors that are typical of this style. A good overall beer, lots of flavor. The lighter flavors allow the alcohol to shine through a bit more than normal. The carbonation sting lightens up and the flavors blend more smoothly once the brew warms up a bit.

I got this 1 pint 0.9oz brown bottle at the Binny's store in Bloomingdale, IL for $3.29. No freshness date.

The beer poured a cloudy golden/yellow color with a fast rising humongous white head that lasts several minutes. Lacing was decent.

Not much of an aroma. What there was seemed like a crazy mix of herbs, spices, and bananas.

The first thing you get is a creamy banana taste. Then a wheaty/bready flavor kicks in, followed by a lemony twang. Cloves and herbal hops round things out.

The mouthfeel is creamy and medium bodied with medium carbonation.

This is a very unique tasting beer that hides the 7.7% abv very well. Well worth a try.

A: Pours a cloudy golden color with tons of carbonation. Has a two finger thick, soapy white head. Eventually the beer clears up into a quite clear gold with lots and lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom

S: Getting lots of herbal spices and bready notes. Simlar to sourdough bread, also a bit of cloves and earthy types of aromas. Hops slightly detectable

T: Follows the nose well. Tons of huge bready notes with some spice in there as well. Has a bit of sweetness on the backend with some honey notes

M: Thick and creamy and highly carbonated. Excellent.

Overall this was excellent. I'm not too familiar with the Weizenbock style, but this one has got me intrigued. Top notch stuff

Appearance: Vitus pours a hazy, golden, light amber. Held to the light, oranges and yellow burst from the haze and almost make it glow. Superior. The head here is a finger and a half high mass of stark white, tiny bubbled foam. The thickness takes it's time dissipating. It makes for an attractive and "classic" beer look. What should I expect from the oldest brewery in the world though?

Smell: Cloves and bananas are the first things I detect. They dominate at first but there's a sweetness here followed by a wheat tang. It's neat, you can actually smell each layer come apart. Underneath everything is a peppery-ness to it all. There's also a faint peach or apricot aroma...quite intoxicating.

Mouthfeel: Very light. Vitus goes down incredibly smooth. There's a weight here though, almost like a "cereal" texture inside it all.

Taste: The first taste that hits has a creamy banana taste and quality. It's light but it lays on the tongue with confidence. As the creaminess fades and the beer moves to the middle of the tongue, there's a peppery-ness and the strong flavor of cloves. Each layer here is very simple and distinct. It's really something of beauty. As the beer finishes, everything smooths out and goes down as if it had never happened. Too drinkable.

Overall: A reasonably price beer that looks, smells, feels and tastes amazing from the oldest brewery in the world. Could a beer lover ask for more? I'd say no. Vitus is an all time favorite and a real showstopper for me. Pick this beer up. You will not be dissappointed.
