Poured from the bottle into a wheat ale glass.

A very soapy white head, that disappears on a nice controlled pour very quickly. Body color is a murky yellow but fairly uniform, some nice rising carbonation elevator music, and scattered cola bubbles. Manages a nice thin collar.

Nose seems very banana forward, clean and borderline crisp. Hints of classic wheat like chewiness. Not bad with a drying clove like angle.

Taste feels like a good mix from what is on the nose. A good malt backbone mixes with crisp carbonation that doesn't take away from the palate. Some nice chewy body, a good citrus and banana angle mixes nicely, with a spritzy soda fountain finish.

Overall, pretty nice and pleasant and refreshing. Kind of what you expect from Weihenstephan.

P: pours a dirty sunshine yellow with a pure white head that lasts for days and leaves a scandalous lacing.

S: smells of wheat, flowers, clove and very light waft of spices

T: very similar to a heff, its flowery and spicy with hits of banana and cloves, finishes very clean with the alcohol sneaking in there.

MF: carbonation makes it very drinkable, not hoppy at all so it goes down smooth and clean.

OA: very good, i like this german style that sticks to the original brewing law. tastes like high class. well played.

The Weihenstephaner weizenbock is a generally solid version of the style, with heavy emphasis on smooth wheat malt flavors and phenolics. While enjoyable, the recipe seems to generate a less complex beer, relative to Aventinus, and with the high ABV, I'm often left wondering why one would choose this over an equally focused wheat beer with similar flavors. Vitus is definitely smoother than its lighter sibling, but for me, this isn't worth the trade-off.

Pours a large, fluffy, off-white head, many centimeters in height and made up of medium-sized bubbles, creating a dense, sponge-like effect. Head declines over several minutes to a persistent cap atop the beer. Leaves small spots of lacing, nothing exciting. Body is lighter than Aventinus, this a dark and hazy yellow-gold with orange and yellow highlights when held to the light. Hazy to the point of barely being able to see my hand through the glass, but can still make out some modest carbonation.

Aroma of wheat malt, old bananas, vanilla, and some bread. Not noticing phenolics or spices; wouldn’t even be thinking about them if others hadn’t mentioned detecting them. Seems simpler, less complex, than Aventinus.

Taste opens with sweetness and tanginess from wheat malt, dense banana bread, noticeable phenolics such as nutmeg and clove. Transitions midway to large amounts of pale wheat and barley malt sweetness with intense bananas, reduced phenolics, vanilla, and caramelized sugar. Taste closes out with slight ethanol and some mild, but noticeable chocolate notes, which is a little unexpected, but interesting.

Body is medium to medium-heavy with modest carbonation, allowing for a smooth, creamy mouthfeel with just a bit of foaming up on the palate. Finish is dry, slightly sticky from sweetness. Instead of being obviously smelt or tasted, alcohol burn is felt in the back of the mouth, throat, after each sip.

Poured into a Houblon Chouffe glass (looks like stemmed weizen - pilsner type glass)

Look - Perfect for a beer of this type. Light, hazy straw yellow with a persistent 0.5cm head that nicely coats and laces this particular glass.

S - Strong Bavarian yeast smell. Banana, baking bread, and a bit of cloves. Everything is clearly distinct, yet subtle and not overpowering. Like listening to music on expensive headphones.

T - This is how I want wheat beer to taste. The promises of the nose are all there, but it's followed by the ever subtle burn of an ~8% light beer. It's difficult to describe how distinct each flavor is without drowning out everything else.

F - It couldn't be better. Carbonation initially tickles the mouth, but then subsides and allows the beer to smoothly coat it making you long for more. You think it feels light and not much more than carbonation, but when you really stop to pay attention, you realize it's almost slightly oily and pretty full-bodied.

O - This beer is perfectly balanced and impressively delicate (especially considering the relatively high ABV). I am not usually one for wheat beers, but to me this is a beautiful example of everything I like about them while leaving out everything I don't. If I were to pick a beer for a spring picnic, this is my hands-down winner. For me, the Bavarian bar has been set.

a: hazy straw colored body with a fingers worth of bright white head that quickly settles to a thin ring. i would say retention and lacing are less than desired.

s: wheat, bananna and clove are the main players although some other fruity aromas and spice are in the background.

t: freshly ground wheat at first followed by bananna and what seems to be apples and pineapple. has a spicy finish with the clove.

m: sharp and crisp with a somewhat chewy body from the wheat. goes down smooth with an oily feel to it. and a long sweet yet dry champaign finish.

o: pretty frickin good. usually the banannas and clove overpower, but not in this one. blended very well and will recommend to everyone.

Bottle into dimpled mug.

Dry cracked spicy wheat with cloves, banana, and bubblegum.
There's a surprising amount of gummy sweetness and fruity esters.

Light golden-- very clear. Looks very highly carbonated, with a nice 2 fingers head of shiny foamy head.

Really pretty nice-- very easy to drink. Pretty light airy body with lots of carbonation.

I'll be honest-- after seeing ColoradoBob mention this a bunch in the forums, I decided I had to try it... And I'm not disappointed! Another great beer from this brewery!

Vitus pours a rich, hazy, straw color. Head retention is minimal; the only thing preventing this brew from getting a perfect score. I would prefer a chunkier foam. It tastes like a beefed up version of their hefeweizen. Cloves, Banana, Bread, with a slightly alcoholic tinge. It's awesome seeing this on a shelf so far away. Prost!

On tap at Library Alehouse in Santa Monica, CA.

Pours a murky yellow-orange with an off-white head that fades to nothing. No lace on this one. Smell is of wheat, spices, bubblegum, and banana. Taste is much the same with strong flavors and the banana coming through especially on the aftertaste. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is extremely tasty and easy to drink.

500 ml bottle poured into pint glass.

Pours a very hazy, surprisingly light yellowish-tan color. Much lighter than I'd expect from a bock. Lots of head that sticks around. Even a good half hour later, there's still about a half centimeter.

Smell is mostly yeast with a strong malt backbone. Essentially smells like a hefe with three times the maltiness.

Unsurprisingly, that's what it tastes like, too. Yeast, cloves, some banana, and malt malt malt. Not much hops to speak of, but a little more bitterness in the aftertaste than the hefe.

Very creamy and full from the carbonation. Not prickly at all, but full of bubbles.

I actually like this more than the Weihenstephaner Hefe, which I found underwhelming. It's surprisingly drinkable for how malt-heavy it is, and it hides the ABV very well. I'd certainly recommend this as an outstanding weizenbock.

500ml bottle. Nice to see the lesser available offerings from this venerable brewery now available in our fair province.

This beer pours a very hazy, cloudy, pale yellow straw colour, with a tall tower of broad marshmallow white head, which settles at a somewhat agonizingly slow pace, eventually leaving a one-sided spatter of chunky lace 'around' the glass. Very witbier-esque, overall, really.

It smells of sweet, sugary wheat cereal grain, subtle fleshy banana, a much more forward spicy clove, and an everyman earthiness. The taste is more wheaty, grainy malt, a lessened spicy component on account of the slowly waning clove, a slight lemony fruitiness, and other nondescript orchard fruit, mellowed against a swelling yeastiness, and very mild booze warming.

The carbonation is very sedate, the body a lesser medium weight, but still quite smooth and agreeable. It finishes off-dry, the wheaty malt not giving up too much ground, and the aforementioned spice hanging on for life, amongst a very agreeable, subdued alcohol warming.

A weird confluence of Euro styles - in the end, this is really a big-ass witbier or hefeweizen, take your pick, even as the booze laughs off its obvious obfuscation. A wee bit too light for the style, but who am I to argue with centuries to the contrary?

500ml bottle poured into tulip 15/2/12

A murky golden yellow with a massive three finger head even after a soft pour, decent retention and partial rings of lace well down the glass, looking good

S some cereal, banana, clove, lemon and pineapple, smells pretty good, like a hefe on steroids

T a little more spice then the smell and just barely noticeable booze

M fairly heavy for the color and quite creamy on the verge of turning to foam but not quite, leaves just a little behind on your gums

O this one would waste you under a hot sun because it went down very fast, quite easy to drink for a bigger beer I liked it a lot

I think I need to research the style because this was not what I was expecting, this reminds me of a double hefe if that makes sense, drink it and you'll understand what I mean

Poured from a one pint, .09oz. bottle into a Duvel Belgian Tulip glass. I picked up a few bottle of this, and a few of the Hefeweissbier from The Beer Store in Southampton PA.

Appearance: A not so aggressive cloudy golden pour still got me a huge 2”+ frothy head that stuck around for a few minutes before reducing to a thin off-white ring. No lacing present during this head reduction. Lacing decided to show up and be clingy when I tilted my glass. I was expecting this style to be a bit darker but it reminded me of a classic hefe.

Smell: Banana, lemon, wheat and clove spices catch the nose right away, making way for a yeasty citrus finish. As the beer warms a bit, some of the booziness sneaks through at the end of my inhale. Nice…

Taste: I don’t detect any sourness in the nose but it is present on the tongue right away, followed by a lightly sweet and spicy citrus blend dominating the middle, with hints of banana, bubblegum, clove and dark fruits in the finish. A slightly boozy warmth follows the finishing flavors. Each and every sip brings a smile to my face.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with just the right amount of carbonation to allow all of the flavors to blend perfectly with the creamy texture. The 7.7% ABV is still well hidden. The warmth is present, but certainly not overwhelming.

Overall: A Weizenbock?? I’m not convinced. I consider Schneider Weisse Aventinus a true Weizenbock, which is why it remains one of my favorites of all time. This one reminded me more of a "pumped-up" Hefeweizen than a Weizenbock. Either way, it was pretty darn tasty. I’m glad I have a few more bottles. Weihenstephaner knows how to make some really great beers. Well done!!!

05.l bottle poured into a Weihenstephan glass.
Looks a cloudy golden yellow with a 3 finger pure white head that disappears very slowly and leaves a lot of lacing around the glass.
It smells fruity and spicy with bananas, some cloves and malts.
The taste is much the same with a little sweet and sour nicely balancing each other and while the alcohol is present it is warming and pleasant.
The body is smooth with just the right carbonation. It feels just perfect

In short, this beer is absolute bliss and the only downside to it is that I don't have more.
Definitely my favourite beer this winter and quite possibly my favourite Weihenstephaner beer.
