Appearance: Although it takes up nearly the entire glass when first poured, the white head is light and foamy, lending itself to the effervescent nature of this style. The color is far lighter than I had expected. It is a nice lemon yellow, with the typical wheat beer haze.

Smell: Lemon, bubblegum, and mint make for an interesting, yet not entirely tempting, combo. The possible sugary zest of this bouquet is counterbalanced by the toasty Munich malt typical for the style.

Taste: Lemons are replaced by bananas, while airy notes of mint and bubblegum manage to hang on. The maltiness goes head-to-head with the esters, making for a somewhat strange, yet interesting combination...kind of like a banana sandwich on multigrain bread.

Mouthfeel: The medium mouthfeel is thickened by the wheat and yeast. Carbonation is characteristically medium-high and does a good job making the beer both filling and spritzy.

Overall: A beer which, for me, is swimming in dichotomies. The flavors don't seem to mix all that well, but the toasted malt going up against the esters is both true to style and worth witnessing if you haven't had this type of beer before. A beer that could grow on me. I would certainly like to try it again further down the road.

Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle into a tall Summit glass. Label code of 6103.

Appearance: Pours a very hazy yellowish golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Huge four finger white head that slowly fades into a thinner creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing.

Smell: A nicely funky, fruity, and spicy wheat forward aroma. Big wheat and malt scent with hints of grains, straw, yeast, biscuit, oat, and cracker. Big hints of clove spice and bubblegum. Lively fruit hints of bananas, apple, and citrus orange, apricot, and lemon. Subtle dark fruit hints of raisin, fig, and plum. Some hints of pepper spice and sweet honey as well. The wheat, banana, and spices really shine. A very good aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma, a big mix of wheat, fruits, and funky spice with lots of banana esters. Lots of bready wheat and malt upfront with notes of straw, grains, yeast, biscuit, cracker, and oats. Lots of clove and pepper spicing with some good bubblegum esters. Good mix of fruits with notes of banana, apple, and citrus orange, lemon, and slight apricot and pineapple. Undertones of dark fruit with notes of fig, plum, and raisin. Some light honey sweetness rounds it out. A really great classic wheat beer taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Crisp, creamy, smooth, and nicely drying on the finish. Alcohol presence is mild.

Overall: A really great classic German Weizenbock. Great balance of bready wheat, spices, and fruit esters. One of the best in the style.
