Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Bierman9 on 03-02-2007

Our light-coloured, spicy single-bock, “Vitus” is saturated with fine yeast and a creamy foam. It is a specialty with a round character based on the extra long storage time. The fruity smell of dried apricots joins aromas of citrus, cloves and hints of banana. Full-bodied and sparkling with an effervescent mouthfeel. Thus, the Vitus does not taste like a typical Bock beer but more like a noble, fruity wheat beer. Perfect with red meat, strong cheese and also able to guide desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Ordered this one from Liquid Solutions, mainly because ColoradoBobs loves it.

A - Poured out a hazy, orange-yellow color with a huge, foamy, bubbly, off white head. No lacing.

S - It smelled of wheat, citrus, lemon, clove and hints of banana. Really great aroma. Similar to their hefe.

T - It had a sweet wheat flavor with banana, clove, dried fruits and some caramel malt.

M - It was sharp, crisp and smooth. A light-bodied beer with a dry finish.

D - This is a very good beer. Doesn't seem to fit the style. It has lots of weizen and very little bock.

My second beer of the night from this brewery, and I have a half-liter to make me happy. On to the beer:

Big, dense, whipped, frothy, great looking is the head. The color is great, straw blonde, cloudy. Is this going to be their original weissbier on crack? the aroma is downright addicting as well. Very flavorful, banana, clove, lemon, ginger, cake. Oh science, I want to drink this now!

The taste does not let down. A slight kick of booze is felt. Lots of good stuff...am I baking cookies at grandma's? Clove, banana, some bubblegum flavor, sweet. This tastes like a spice cabinet. Yum! And not too much.

Is there a wheat ale they can't produce well? This is a great way to get summer flavor, but with more meat on its bones for the winter.

After hearing about all of the comparisons to Aventinus, I had to give this one a shot.

A- Huh? What? Expected a much darker brew here. This one poured a very cloudy and hazy golden color with some copper tints. Nice off white head, no lace.

S- Straight up banana. This was one fruity smelling beer. Very nice clove and spice scent but overly banana and bubble gum.

T- Yes! This is why I love weizens. Tropical fruits abound with a really nice spice kick. Allspice, pineapple, banana, sugars...Not much pepper or bitnerness here. Very tasty and surprisingly complex.

M- Lots of carbonation going on here. Medium bodied. Slick. Refreshing.

D- Not as good as I had expected, but still, this was awesome. For 2.99 you cannot go wrong.

Pours assertively yelllow, cloudy, with brilliant white head that is nice and pillowy.

Nose is like any other fine example of a hefe-weizen: banana, clove, fresh bready & yeasty aromas. Delightful.

Palate is more malty than a traditional hefe-weizen, with alcohol warmth apparent, but doesn't detract from the flavor. Basically comes across as a "big brother" hefe-weizen.

Very drinkable. Worth seeking.

500 ml bottle poured in a pilsner for lack of a better glass option.

Pours a hazy/milky golden carbonation with a huge white head.

Smell is buttery, fruity, and malty. Bananas and spice are present.

Taste is bright and sweet, but not too sweet. It is balanced by some spicy hoppiness.

Mouthfeel is light, light like a feather. Not thin, just wonderfully light. This is what a light beer should be.

Wonderfully drinkable 7.7 abv beer. I had been wondering what the buzz surrounding this beer, and now I know.

picked up last weekend at Belmont Station... I've been wanting to try this for a while since ColoradoBob began pimping it a while back... here we go... poured into my smaller weizen glass.

Nice 3 finger head... pillowy.. not alot of lace.. but I'm not complaining.. the brew is glowing straw... pretty.

aroma is like a banana smoothy... clove is fairly present ... but the esters outweigh the phenols significantly.. maybe some bubblegum as it warms... smells fairly thick.

this is thick... again... like a banana milkshake.. very smooth and soft palate.. pale malt sweetness without a caramel in sight... very nice... finish is long and grainy.. with a trailing banana essence... yummy.

Drinkability is my only complaint.. and that really isn't a complaint.. I would just have problem with more than one bottle... I would be too full to think about another.

I wish we still had access to Weihenstephaner in Boise.. the source dried up probably about 4 years ago... I have forgotten how much I appreciate their beers... this is a classic.

Bottle@home, shared with my old man.

A: Golden yellow with a generous, firm white head. Looks very inviting!

S: Wheat, Yeast, Spices, Banana marshmallow, Hay.

T: Wheat, Fruit, Citric notes, Yeast, Spices, Cloves.

M: Refreshing wth a acidic touch and plenty of carbonation with a solid malt backbone.

Wow, this tastes like a Wiehenstephaner Hefe with lots more body. Very drinkable and tasty. Recommended!

pint bottle poured into a flute. pours a pale yellowish straw color with a sizable, tight white head that leaves no lacings and takes a few minutes to subside.

aroma is of light wheat malt, with notes of citrusy hops and lightly bready malt. more of a hefeweizen in the nose than a weizenbock.

taste follows the aroma, with a more pronounced malt backbone, but still a presistant citrus quality that does not make it to the finish, leaving the palate with a mildly crisp character and light wheat malt notes.

mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with a acidity from the citrus notes and a mildly bland character from the wheat malt.

drinkability is good, this is just not what one would come to expect from a weizenbock. for what it is, it is a well proportioned and nicely crafted brew, it is just not malty enough for a bock.

Vitus pours a hazy straw yellow color with a very large bright white head that had good retention for most of the beer. I expected for this beer to a bit darker. The nose smells of a good hefe with plenty of banana, cloves, and apples and pears. The flavor follows the nose to perfection, but it also adds in some bubblegum, lemons, and the classic wheat flavor comes in very nice as well. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with some gentle alcohol warming on the backend of things. This is very drinkable and drinks like their regular hefe with more alcohol and plenty of flavor.

Poured a light golden color with nice fluffy white head that lasted a while. I was surprised by the lightness of the color. The aroma was very citrusy. The taste was a flavorful balance of bananas, spice, citrus, and wheat. The mouthfeel was very nice. Despite its 7.7% abv this is an extremely drinkable beer that hides its alcohol well.

500ml bottle
7.7% abv

Pours a hazy light gold..strong head of eggshell-colored foam.
A glorious array of spice, citrus fruits, and pale german malts.
Flavor of white pepper, German yeast, banana, orange, chalky wheat, & a hefty dose of sweet malt..very nicely put together, all the flavors compliment each other exceptionally well.
This is endlessly drinkable for a robust weizenbock..

Certainly one of the best weizenbocks out there..a must try in my book.

Poured into my half liter, hacker-pshorr weisse glass.

Two finger head right after a perfect pour, but recedes to nothing after only a few minutes. Good sunshine wheat color, but a little too clear for a wheat beer and lacking any vibrant bubbling or lacing for that matter. The aroma is classic hefe-weiss. Lots of bananas, sometimes ripe, and plenty of cloves. Plus the warmth of 7.7% abv is noticed a bit in the nose. Sweet, ripe bananas and some tart strawberries start the palate off. Then a few herbal cloves and a little grassy hops with the alcohol cut some of that malty sweetness. Good balance of hot, sweet, and herbal flavors in this beer. Very clean, but a litte palate as well. A little talcy, but very drinkable considering the abv.

Poured from a 16.9 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Body was straw lemon, with some very nice head retention.

Smell: Nose was full of spice and citrus you'd expect.

Taste of spiced banana.

Very smooth and light and refreshing.

One I'll definitely have again.

Bottle; code on back is 5198

Pours a cloudy pale golden into my weizen glass with a massive surging four finger off white head. Had to stop pouring and wait.

Scent is banana, funky yeast, sour wheat, spice (pepper and cloves) and alcohol esters.

Taste is soft and smooth. Bananas, yeast and wheat. Creamy light sourness. Peppery spice; cloves. Coriander? The slightest hint of alcohol spice and warming. A hint of pineapple.

Mouth is creamy and silky.

Drinkability is excellent and abv is nearly unnoticeable.

This is a fantastic beer.

A_The pour started out innocently enough but quickly realizing the giant head forming I slowed the liquid extraction to a trickle. The resulting beer was hazy straw yellow with a huge four finger head cresting over the top of my weizen glass like a muffin top. Lingering, the head retained its shape and magnificent shape throughout.

S_A huge waft of bananas reaches out, as cloves, bubblegum, straw and a hint of grassy hops mingle in.

T_Initially slightly sweet with bubblegum coming to the forefront more than the aforementioned bananas. This is followed up by a light herbal bitterness and a kiss of alcohol. After the smell I expected a stronger tasting beer but it is actually on the milder side. The fruity yeast remains the main force throughout with minor hints of wheaty twang showing up as well.

M_Mildly thick with a perfect weizen carbonation

D_Very drinkable with no trace of the alcohol. Dangerously drinkable, I am surprised it has taken me this long to try this offering from a brewery I discovered a long time ago.

The Vitus is very lively as I poured it into the glass. It was a hazy yellow white color with a aggressive 3 finger foam head. It had a tight bubble foam head that was close to egg white. It left some nice wave lacing.

The aroma was crisp and smelled of fruit, primarily of bananas and citrus. The taste was a little bready with that yeast strain making itself noticed. On the back end it left you with a moderate bitterness that mocked the back of the throat. It was well carbonated and you have a fruitiness that won't go away. Primarily the bananas. Overall this was a wonderful beer.

A: Cloudy straw with a white head; good retention & lacing. I'm surprised this is more of a helles than a dunkle.

S: Big banana aroma, cloves, spice & a little lemon zest. The yeast sediment adds a little earthiness.

T: Banana with hints of lemon & pineapple, slightly bready, grassy and peppery spicing, light on the cloves, alcohol is subtle. The yeast tastes better than their bottled hefeweizen.

M: Moderate body is smooth with crisp finish.

D: Quite drinkable.

It's great, but certainly a little different for the style.

Thanks to SkinnyElvis for this Halloween '08 treat!

A - Into a Weihenstephan Weizen glass. This is pretty much the perfect example of how a German brew is supposed to look. 3 fingers of towering, taught, frothy foam that's a good half inch out of the glass... crowning a hazy, well-carbonated golden/orange body. The head is slowly starting to subside. No lacing.

S - Basically a hefe on steroids. Bananas, wheat, yeast, clovey... no noted alcohol, no noted malt profile. Just a ramped up hefeweizen. Not bad at all, not really what I think of when I think of weizenbock, is all.

T - Taste mimics the smell, and doubles it. Huge banana vibe, huge clovey vibe. Sweet pink bubblegum, fruit salad... just a wonderful brew. No crazy alcohol bite, nothing remotely off.

M - Creamy, thick, bold, yet has a nice medium-high level of carbonation that keeps it wonderfully drinkable and almost refreshing for such a big ass hefe.

D - This is incredibly drinkable, and another one of those brews that holds an eternal spot in my fridge.

Notes: I can't believe I haven't reviewed this yet. I've been drinking it all summer thanks to the king of Vitus... CBobs.

Found a bit of paper where I had scribbled this review a few months ago during the cooler weather, but had failed to enter it in!

Served in a Mahrs Brau porcelain mug. Use by date of 20/9/09. Sweet nose of banana, spices and fresh malty goodness. An attractive fluffy white head - the way i like it. A striking rich malt backbone that overpowers the faint wheatiness. High ABV, but this is well masked as is the case with good German bock beers.

Mild alcoholic bitterness in the finish.

A gem.

Got this bottle from Oak Tree in South Plainfield.

A: Pours a hazy, golden body with a very thick, silky, white head with excellent retention and beautiful lacing along the sides of the glass.

S: A sweet, wheat smell with some banana ester undertones.

T: A sweet, juicy, malt taste with some metallic, banana ester aftertaste. Could not taste the alcohol, but it was pretty warming.

M: A silky smooth mouthfeel that was also very crisp. An awesome feeling beer that was very easy to drink and very, very smooth.

D: Excellent mouthfeel and taste combination. This beer is one of the best examples of this style and any wheat beer.

Poured on tap at Julians in Providence RI into a snifter.
Cloudy yellow orange in appearance with a suspended murk. Nice fluffu head that sticks around for a while.
Smells of clove, spice, fruit sweetness.
Tastes of banana, clove right off the bat. Followed by malt sweetness.
Mouthfeel is light/ Medium. Lively carbonated though very smooth at the same time.
Wonderfully drinkable beer. Hard to believe that it's 7.7%! So happy to try on tap.

Wow. This is the one I have been wanting for a while.

Have you ever had the taste for a certain type of beer, but you weren't sure where to find it? Nothing you have had previously was quite the one you were looking for. You had a pretty damn good idea what flavors you were craving, but just couldn't fill the void of taste that you were experiencing. That's been me for about two weeks. Not anymore. I found it!

This gem of a brew pours a nice golden yellow color with just the slightest bit of haze. Big, fluffy white head rises above the lip of the glass. Not much lacing, but that's ok. Lots of bubbles racing to the surface.

The aroma is filled with banana, clove, pepper, and a bit of yeast. Touch of alcohol comes through, also. Wheat and a touch of fig is noticeable, too. Smells yummy. As it warms, the spices become stronger.

The flavor nails it. Dead on for the style, imo, and my cravings. Warming banana spice bread seems to be filling my mouth. Maybe a bit of raisins in there too...just a few though. A little bit of bubblegum comes in for a second, just to sweeten it up a tad. Nice spice character works well with fruitiness. This one is damn tasty.

Smooth body with just a touch of prickleyness (is that even a word?) on the tongue. A little bit warming, but the alcohol isn't really noticed. Extremely drinkable. The extra bottle I bought is now gone. I'll be picking more of this up on my next visit to the store.

Served on tap along with a Hefeweissbier; colors are remarkably similar, mostly golden and hazy. The Vitus has a little grayish tinge to it. In bar light, it's not much different at all.

Awesome, full clove and banana bouquet that leaps out of the glass as strongly as it's cousin. The flavor is strong and pronounced, not very much different from the original weizen.

The alcohol is a little more pronounced, the herbal character more prominent, and the mouthfeel a touch less creamy. Great beer.

500ml Bottle
Binny's Orland

After all the LNBA (ColoradoBobs) talk of Vitus lately I had to pick up a bottle the other day. Vitus fills my mug with a lemon yellow beer and numerous streams of carbonation rushing to the surface. After a swirl and pour the yeast cloud grows throughout the body causing haziness throughout. The bubbly head easily rose to three fingers but fell just as quickly to a thick cap with good lasting power. The head is slick and doesn't do much sticking down the glass.

This beer smells like warm banana bread with a healthy backbone of spices. White pepper and clove are the first two that come to mind and really pop as this beer warms. The yeast used is throwing around all kinds of esters along with the spiciness including mild pineapple and bubblegum. The wheat adds a subtle sour twang but this beer is all about the yeast.

The flavor really jumps out with big notes of ripe banana and the peppery quality of green bananas. Dried somewhat sugary pineapple dives in mid-palate combining with the banana and soon joined by bubblegum and the spiciness noted in the aroma. I'm happy to say the clove is mild and accentuates the flavor instead of detracting. Clove is one of those spices for me that can easily be overpowering. This is an incredibly unique beer that I have yet to find anything along the same lines. Vitus is a tasty beer.

The body on this beer is where it should be. As it hits the tongue it feels a little light but the carbonation quickly kicks in and transforms the body into liquid velvet. The carbonation is lively enough to snap across the tongue while the body works through.

A pint of Vitus just isn't enough in a sitting. It's too bad this beer isn't cheaper and sold in 6-packs, which would be the way to go.

I've passed this beer up over and over again for the last year. I like all that Weihenstephaner does but I just kept passing this one up in favor of American micros. Thanks for talking this up so much ColoradoBobs, hard to tell when I would have tried it had it not been for your constant pimping.

After reading all about this brew on ColoradoBobs posts, I had to try it. That white tiger is enough to scare even Siegfried & Roy.

Pours with a huge four finger crackly sounding, cloud like head. Huge valleys and peaks to this one, but not much lacing. Hazy light honey yellow.

Smell is of lemon oil, bitter green apples, slight warming from the booze, nice lager yeast background, light and bright fruits. Good smell in my book.

Taste is also with the lemon oil, light fruits, but more of a grain profile as well, hops are there but don't get in the way of the light flavors probably Hallertau, Taste is slightly on the trappist side but very lightly. I'm trying to taste something but can't get it, I'm gonna have to say, Muscat?

Mouthfeel is great, very refreshing and clean, would be wonderful on a hot day or with a meal.
Drinkability is huge, got to say Bobs you called it on this one, what else you got?
