A - fully hazy straw golden, tower of white head retained outstandingly
S - sour citrus and funky yeasty esters, light buttery grains, all pleasing aromas
T - strong yeasty esters with banana and sour citrus, solid clove spice note, and grainy malt background
M - light body with plenty of creamy carbonation, a light yet full feel going down
O - just an outstanding brew from top to bottom, and a perfect way to kick off a day of Oktoberfest celebrating

Poured from a16 oz. Bottle into a goblet borrowed from a Holiday Inn kitchen in Albany NY. Consumed on 8/27/13.

A - Small white head that dies down to just a fizzy film rather quickly. Lots of small, champagne like carbonation. The color of the beer is a very attractive translucent, wild orange, golden rod.

S - I got a very funky, tart aroma right away that was a pleasant surprise. Then came all of the scrumptious and familiar German wheat beer aromas. The banana and spicy clove esters were present and enjoyable. Then I noticed something a bit less familiar. I noticed a similarity in the sweet grains, citrusy notes and spicy clove aromas to the glaze and spices used on a Christmas ham. Strange? Yes, but also very appealing and nostalgic.

T - The taste certainly matches the flavors and robustness of the smell, and adds sneaky alcohol flavors and warmth while still maintaining an incredible smoothness.

M - Soft tingly carbonation. Mid to full mouthfeel, which I assume is normal for the style. The finish is very warm and dry.

O - I've been looking forward to this German classic, and it did not disappoint. It was a joy to drink, and at about $3.50 a bottle I have a feeling I'll be drinking it again soon.

Very hazy, light-golden in color. Almost three fingers of foam with very good head retention and some nice lacing. Aroma is quite estery, led by banana and clove. Grainy wheat cracker note and bit of gumball round it out.

The flavor profile can be likened to a "super-hefeweizen." Estery, yeast-forward flavor with a much bigger malt profile than the usually semi-dry hefe. Light bitterness, becoming more balanced on the finish. Sudsy, full texture cleans the palate nicely. Banana and clove work nicely together with a honeyed malt sweetness.

Vitus is a very nice, paler take on the usually darker wheat bock. Imagine a more flavorful version of Weihenstephaner's top-notch hefeweizen, and you've got Vitus.
