pint bottle poured into a nonic pint. pours a curiously pale amber color with a single finger of dense white head. light lacings and solid retention.
aroma is malty, with a hay like quality and notes of distant caramel and a deep buscuit like character that feeds off of the malt undertones. a bit light on the caramel malts for a marzen.
taste is of a wet hay-like malt and caramel malt up front, with a lightly staling quality and a finish of stale grain and notes of bready malt in the aftertaste. this brew falls short of anything else from Weihenstephaner, which is dissapointing.
mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth on the palate, with a bit of CO2 upon finishing and a light bitterness after the fact.
drinkability is decent. this is not much of a marzen, without the caramel malt quality, nor a warming sensation that the style usually showcases. the staleness in the grain does not help either. hopefully this brew is much better on-tap in germany, because this does not stand up to any other offering from Weihenstephaner.
