This is kind of a disappointing Oktoberfest. First of the year. I'm just wondering if it is from last year, although it really doesn't seem to be old, just seems early to see an Oktoberfest out already.
This is the lightest colored Oktoberfest I've yet seen. Looks like a Pilsner, but with a weaker head. The head consists of large bubbles with very little retentiveness, thus the lacing is quite weak as well. Plenty of carbonation, however.
The smell is still very pilsner-like. Smells like mostly pils malt with saaz and hallertauer hops. Not bad, but it lacks the rich yet clean malty flavor I expect in an Oktoberfest. The taste is no different, although there is a little bit more of a biscuity munich malt flavor. Has a hint of a metallic and soapy finish, however, which kind of stunts the beer in the drinkability department.
Crisp and light bodied, but seems too soft, like a Czech pils. Needs to be a little more sharp and aggressively malty. Decent hops bitterness, on the other hand. Not too bad, but it was worth a try. Enough to get me excited for the upcoming Oktoberfest season.
